one is janet yellen's experience.line the economy we can bring marginal participants back into the labor market. labor force participation is a theme. that is probably something we don't have to focus on until midyear when we see wage inflation. the other thing is the economy is having its wily coyote moment. it runs off a cliff and has not looked down. we are seeing a fairly significant stall in manufacturing, isn has been -- ism has been grinding lower. the factory sector is being hit hard by the strong dollar. if that stalls, is it going to bring the rest of the economy down with it? i don't know that that is the case but i suspect we are going to see that. tom: every jobs day is the headline data, what will you be looking for? carl: i don't think we will see a stall but the risk is down shift more pronounced in the second quarter. i will look at the manufacturing components. manufacturing payrolls, over time in the manufacturing sector aggregate hours. tom: you go that deep? carl: look for evidence that there's re

janet: sure, they are brand name. of ivy league, you get a great job after graduation, but they are lots of applications because there is so much uncertainty and you see these admission rates of 5% at harvard and stanford, 10% at 10 -- penn. in order to hedge your bets, kids are applying to more schools. we heard from a couple of colleges that drop their essays. if you think about the 17 euro holds out there, they might be looking at which schools do not have a supplemental essay and i will throw in a couple more applications out there. mark: let's talk about cost compared to state universities. what are we looking at at that ivy league schools, are they becoming more affordable? janet: if you don't qualify for financial aid, you will see the increase of almost 5%, but if you do qualify and you are a lower income student, if your family's income is $65,000 or less at harvard and stanford you will not pay anything. it will likely be a very good deal, better than perhaps your state deal. but it depends on what your fami

janet lawrence joins me with more on this board. does the student loan balances continue to increase? >> good question. you see the number of loans continue to creep up because every year there is a new cohort of borrowers. also people are not paying down the balances. they may be deferring because they are struggling or going into income-driven payments. the education department has in publicizing more because you can make a small payment and not be in default or delinquency, but at the same time, the overall balance will continue to grow. mark: the median balance $14,440. >> it does not sound like a lot. you can see that in the chart. those that are growing to graduate -- those going to graduate school are borrowing more. the interesting thing about that the full numbers when you look at a number of like that and can see a lot of people are dropping out. maybe they borrow for a year or two years and did not finish the degree. mark: why are so few bringing that balance down? >> again, they are just that making regular payments. whe
