brian: janice dean knows it went up to a cat 3, right, janice? janice: it did.il yesterday when it weakened slightly. so, i think, you know, in that situation you have to know what your surroundings are like if you are dealing with 105 mile-per-hour sustained winds or 150 mile-per-hour sustained winds. that's still a formidable storm. we were always saying 5 to 7-foot storm surge. some areas 8-foot storm surge. the results of the storm have not changed just the category, which at this point, whether it's a 2 or 3 doesn't matter. we are still going to get the same results. we are seeing on shore flow with these outer bands. tropical storm force winds by the way extended out 200 miles from the center of the storm. so results of this storm widespread and threat for not only storm surge, heavy rain fall. lightning but we have tornado warned storms as well. several tornadoes warnings for parts of north carolina. all of these effects we were anticipating whether it was a category 2 or category 3. flood advisories in effect. flash flooding is occurring in charleston. i

janice dean is tracking the storm. we begin with griff jenkins in port saint lucia with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. the outer band here is 116 miles from where we are on the indian river, 116 miles out, where they are continuing to be devastated by dorian. you can see indian river rising. we are getting gustss of tropical storm windss, 45-50 mile-per-hour range. this is not going to get better if the storm stays where it is because epicenter of the storm, 150 miles out our tropical storm winds, 45 miles from the center are hurricane winds. those northern winds along the river running parallel to the barrier islands, the hutchinson islands over there. it will continue to cause problems. we have been talking to officials at the emergency operations command center. they said they are getting calls from residents asking what is going on with the storm, where's the hurricane? never thought they would get those calls. we talk to the emergency operations center. here is what he had to say. >> all the way to the sta

jedediah: janice dean is tracking it. janice, what's the latest? yeah, up to a category 5. that is the highest on the saffe saffer simpson scale in terms of categories of storms. you don't see that very often, 160 mile per hour sustained winds, a perfect beast of a storm. that center of the storm is a perfect circle. there's no cloud in the eye. and you can see all four quadrants of this storm are perfectly symmetrical. very rare to see a category 5. it doesn't happen very often. and they have certainly upgraded it. the difference between a 164, 150, 160, not a big difference, but when you talk about how beautiful the storm looks on satellite presentation and how potentially deadly the storm will be for the bahamas. prayers for the bahamas because this storm is going to slow down and when you have the worst possible hurricane, the worst possible storm on your doorstep just crawling along, that is going to be devastating for parts of the northwestern bahamas, unfortunately. it's terrible. the track hasn't changed much but i want to point your attent

jillian: janice dean is tracking the storm. it is still moving slowly but it is a category 3. >> we were shy of 5 miles yesterday, strong category 2. they upgraded to category 3. the next couple hours the south carolina shoreline is taking a directed and impact from this category 3 storm. not only dealing with the storm surge but tornadoes which cause structural damage with these outer bands coming on short and you see the lightning strikes as well. not only potential of a tropical system but the potential for severe storms as well. in and around atlantic beach we had another tornado in oak island. this is turning out to be a dangerous impact from this storm even though it has not made landfall. the closest brush we will see his this time tomorrow morning for north carolina, the outer banks. here is future radar, approaching hatteras, this time tomorrow friday as point of landfall. landfall is the lowest pressure when the center comes on shore. the effects of this are going to be widespread for the carolinas. here's the tropica

janice, i'm hearing two landfalls are possible. is that true? janice: we'll have to see.roach to landfall will be tomorrow around this time off the coast of north carolina around cape hatteras. the impacts will be the same, landfall, all that means is the center of circulation comes over land. it's the lowest pressure point. it's for statistical purposes. we're dealing a direct hit for the carolinas with the strongest of winds and not only tropical storm force winds, hurricane force winds, but because we have these outer bands scraping across land and the rotation is there, we have the threat for tornadoes. these are tornado borne storms in parts of north and south carolina. atlantic beach, oak island and you can see the lightning strikes as well. so severe storms. the severe potential as the storm moves closer to land and those outer bands move in. here's the future radar, so as we go through this evening, really close brush here with mirror the tell beach and wilmington -- myrtle beach and wilmington. the potential for landfall sometime tomorrow morning across the outer

janice, where and when? janice: good questions.e think the worst of the storm in terms of hurricane force winds are going to remain offshore from florida, but the carolinas have to watch this. we could actually be dealing with a landfall on thursday. the storm is not moving, still stationary. it battered the northwest bahamas, the grand bahama island here for 36 hours with category 5, category 4 storm surge, winds, rain, the pictures out of this area will be complete devastation in some of these areas. this is an historic storm for them. it will be catastrophic. now, let's take a look at what happened. the storm is going to remain we think offshore from florida. you're still going to see storm surge and heavy rain and wind and potential for tornadoes. as we get into wednesday and thursday coming very close to the border of south carolina, north carolina, perhaps as a category 3 and perhaps making a landfall, a direct impact. so we have to watch this obviously very carefully over the next several days. florida, it looks good for you

good morning, janice. janice: good morning, ladies.ed storm but it will bring the potential for flooding to portions of southeast texas over the next couple days. you can he see right now the area of low pressure bringing in moisture along the gulf coast, especially texas and it's just going to linger, unfortunately. some computer models saying 6 to 8 inches of heavy rain across portions of southeast texas and the houston area. we're also watching hurricane humberto. this will become a category 2 storm in the next 12 to 24 hours. the good news is, it stays offshore. however, indirect impacts of ripcurrents, large waves, beach erosion for the southeast coastline and this will move noh and a eastward and it will not affect bermuda. we're watching this area of concern. it could become our next named storm and the southeast coast and florida will need to monitor over the next couple days. still active in the tropics, ladies. back to you. cheryl: busy storm season, janice for sure. lauren: coming up, elizabeth warren wowing crowds in new yo

laura: let's go to senior meteorologist janice dean in the fox extreme weather center. janice, i was listening to you earlier, it's not just your words, it's the way your tone has changed as you're watching the storm to tell us all how serious this really is. >> reporter: historic, especially for the northwestern bahamas. they've never experienced a storm of this strength, 180 mile-per-hour sustained winds, gusts of upwards of 220 miles an hour. so your prayers are needed. this storm is about to make landfall across marsh harbor in the bahamas. i can't even imagine, category five going over these areas and very low-lying. and when you're talking about a 23-foot storm surge, that is just going to overtop everything. everything. we have advisories now, hurricane watches in effect for parts of florida. so the national hurricane center is saying there's a good chance you're going to see hurricane force winds in the next 48 hours, and the cone, by the way, two days out, there's a 70-mile discrepancy. so if this storm jogs 30 miles to the west, we're going to be dealing with

brian: janice dean has the big picture. janice.ble imagery. there is the center over hatteras. we should find out from the latest details from the national hurricane center if this is landfall. mid indicated guess is yes. this is low pressure coming over land, the effects, impacts will be the same even if this storm doesn't make a landfall but i believe the center is coming onshore at cape hatteras. the strongest winds in the core of the hurricane, still cat-1, 90 mile-per-hour sustained winds. not only storm surge of four to seven feet, hurricane-force winds along the coast and heavy rainfall. we had two dozen reports of tornadoes. tornado threat will go throughout the day. we don't have tornado warned storms but flash floods occurring with the heavier rain bands. as we go through time, the hurricane-force winds move offshore. we could see tropical storm force winds alongs the coast of new england and rain as well. we will keep you up to date. i believe the storm is making first landfall on the u.s. mainland on cape hatteras. stev
