glenn joins us now along with jared bernstein who, of course, read glenn's piece and agrees with every word. lay it out there for us. you're comparing romney to reagan? >> they are very similar in a sense that both had an emphasis on tax reforms, spending reform, and a real emphasis on growth in the economy. we can do a lot better in this economy and it's time to start now. >> jared, why are you not a believe in the romney plan? what's wrong? >> first of all, it's nice to be on with glenn. we're friends. and i read the piece with great interest. the first problem with the comparison in the piece, at least, is that if you compare the reagan recovery, which was much more of a bounce back than the current one, i totally agree with that, with the obama recovery, it's very much an apple and oranges thing. gdp loss and job loss was twice as much in the obama terms. here we're talking about a housing bubble with very shoddy finance. so the basic premise is wrong. i don't think that's where governor romney intends to come from. >> i want to get you both to react to a comment from the president

jared, let me ask you that. >> okay. yeah, i think so. i think what you see here if you look at these plans -- the beginning, they're starting to shape up. you don't get any details. so you have to look at these things from 40,000 feet up. what you see is basically robin hood in reverse. if they're going to do anything like what they say they want to do which is to give big, big tax cuts to those at the top of the scale and not increase the budget deficit, the only way to do that is to cut tons of spending from everybody else. so this is trickle up with a vengeance. >> now, congressman, i'm going to come to you in a minute, but jared let me ask you. we heard romney questioned again and again this weekend if he would support a deficit reduction plan that included tax increases. listen. >> i remember once back during one of the primaries you were asked if you would agree to $1 in taxes if you could get $10 cut in spending cuts. and you said at that time, no i wouldn't even accept that. do you still feel that way? >> well, we all felt that w

i'm joined now by msnbc contributor jared bernstein.see you, jared, good morning. >> thank you, chris. good to see you. >> what's the argument for raising the minimum wage and why do you think democratic leaders are staying away from it? >> well, the first part of your question, one of the things we know is a significant problem in our economy is that folks at the lower end of the pay or the income scale simply haven't been brought along with an economic recovery that's technically been ongoing now for a couple of years. and if you go back further to the last expansion, over the years of the 2000s, same thing. and that's the well-known problem of economic inequality. one of the problems that low-wage workers have is they just don't have a lot of bargaining power. so it's very tough for them to claim their fair share of the growing economy and a higher wage floor helps them in that regard. >> here's what republicans argued. the vast majority of people who are hired on the minimum wage, by one accounting, at least two-thirds, get a raise

jared, let me ask you. stimulus? how do you recover without some stimulus, without some government investment? i was reading paul krugman this morning. he talked about a big spending president. very interesting. he says, if you look at their records, three years into their terms, you'll see that under one president, real per capita government spending at that point was about -- was 14.4% higher than four years previously under the other. less than half as much, just 6.4%. reagan, not obama, was the big spender. now, these are the people at the party that raised up ronald reagan as the great role model and as the father of conservatism. reagan spent money, and he wasn't even dealing with near the economic problems that president obama faced. >> ronald reagan would last about 30 seconds in today's republican party despite their rhetoric. he also raised taxes 11 times. look, you asked a question about stimulus at a time like this. here's the way to think of it. look at all the economies throughout the globe who are unfo
