nbc 10 national correspondent jay gray joins us live. jay, police are now focusing their search just a few miles from where -- from the prison where they escaped? >> reporter: yeah, renee, jim, you're absolutely right. you can see the road block behind me. much of this area locked down at this point as that man hunt intensifies in that area about three miles from the prison an area where there's a manhole that many investigators believe was used by this pair to climb out to freedom. it's been going on since last night when bloodhounds, police dogs, hit on the scent of one or both of the escapees. they closed in on this area rushed in heavily armed teams, eight to ten officers at a time waited for sunrise and now they have been working the grid area there. the perimeter is expanding. we just learned that the last few minutes. and they say they are going to stay at it for awhile. i believe them because we have seen heavy equipment rolling through here that includes generators and large lights. it looks like they will light that area up and

just the latest development we get now from jay gray. jay? >> reporter: to escape the manhunt that at times seemed like a movie though it was all too real for 1,200 officers and so many families scattered across upstate new york who had been on edge for more than three weeks. david sweat injured and in police custody after 22 days on run. >> mr. sweat was spotted by a new york state police sergeant, sergeant jay cook. he was approached this afternoon. >> reporter: cook was on patrol alone and outside the search area when he approached sweat, and convicted killer started to run. >> at some point running across a field he realized that sweat was going to make it to a tree line an possibly could have disappeared and he fired two shots from his service weapon. >> reporter: sweat was hit in the shoulder. medics rushed him to nearby alice hyde medical center where he was treated and transferred to albany medical center a more secure level one trauma facility. >> at the time his condition is listed as critical. >> reporter: more than 1200 police and

nbc's jay gray is live now. >> reporter: search is over. shot by new york state police a few miles from the can needad canadian border. how long is it? >> can you get a little bit closer to the camera? thanks. >> reporter: the manhunt ended in constable new york two miles from the canadian border when officers closed in on escaped killer david sweat and opened fire. more than 1200 police and federal agents have been focused on the thick woods and rugged terrain in this area of upstate new york after sweat's accomplice, richard matt, was killed friday by an agent with the u.s. customs and border protection tactical unit. as sweat fights for his life in an area hospital, an autopsy report released today indicates matt died as a result of three gunshot wounds to the head. the exam also revealed bug bites on the lower extremities, blisters and minor abrasions, consistent with living in the woods three weeks. on the run since the pair carried out an elaborate escape plan, breaking free from the clinton correctional facility june 6th, a race to f

nbc's jay gray has our story. >> reporter: as the memorial grows and the mourning continues, the man police say confessed to the racist killing spree inside the emanuel ame church, 21-year-old dylann roof, remains behind bars. today his family released a same which says, in part -- nine people were gunned down during a bible study at the church and now a week later, the first of those victims are being laid to rest. funeral services were held today for ethel lance, a retiree and dedicated member of the church, and reverend sharonda coleman singleton, a speech therapist and high school track coach. after a public viewing wednesday at the south carolina state house, the body of reverend clementa pinckney is coming home. hundreds are expected to file through the church today during a wake of the senator and pastor, who was leading the bible study at the mother emanuel last week when the shots rang out, thousands are expected to pay their respects tomorrow, including president obama, who will deliver the eulogy at pinckney's funeral. and because the crowd expected here tomorrow, the serv

nbc correspondent jay gray has the details on the dramatic capture of one of the men late yesterday and now what comes next. >> reporter: after three long weeks, the manhunt ended in just seconds. >> just bang bang. >> reporter: two shots dropping escaped killer david sweat fired by new york state police sergeant jay cook who was on patrol alone outside the search area when he saw sweat along a road just a mile or so from the canadian border. >> at that point sweat took off running and sergeant cook engaged in a foot pursuit of some duration and repeatedly commanded him to stop which he did not comply and prior to entering a woodline near the border sergeant cook used the appropriate means to apprehend him. >> reporter: he was captured 16 miles from the area where his partner in the escape richard matt was shot and killed by a border patrol agent two days earlier. investigators aren't sure when or if the men separated, but did identify sweat's dna not far from where matt was killed. >> it was a picnic-style pepper shakers and we believe that possibly these two males were using pepper to
