thanks a lot, jean. what an unbelievable and very visual live shot there of the hail that came down tonight. now, where jean is is where some of the most widespread hail occurred right across the peninsula here from millbrae ave right to larkspur drive in the peninsula. that's where both the north and southbound lanes of interstate 280 covered in that hail as we just saw in jean's live shot. one to two inches in some cases. we're also getting reports here from chp as we just showed you on our camera. san mateo bridge with also some very slick conditions with isolated hail. we could also be finding some rail right now just to the north of hayward impacting 580 and also interstate 880 as we continue throughout the next half hour. so anyone in the east bay, that's also going to be a sore spot here as that rain comes down. we just get a little bit of uplift in some of these thunderstorm cells and we're seeing that hail being created because that air aloft is so cold, it only has to go so far before it freeze

jean elie has a look at the impact of the wind and the rain. but we begin in the weather center with chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. >> rainfall in the north bay and slowly moving to the south. but one thing that's been constant is that widespread wind topping 60 in some cases. in berkeley with those streets wet and moderate to pockets of heavier rainfall that has been falling throughout tonight. certainly motorists taking it a little bit extra slow here with that rain continuing. let's look at the computer with wi winds. napa, 57. san francisco airport, 43-mile-per-hour wind gusts. also oakland. that will continue throughout this morning. we have that wind advisory for the entire area. it's picked up heavier rainfall and highway 101 also on 280. and this extends over to oakland. on i-680. some of the heaviest rainfall we're currently monitoring was over the peninsula. we're finally starting to see rainfall here in the south bay with this slow-moving storm from palo alto right into san jose. now, one area that's been going all day long, that

back with us in the studio talking about gun violence is oakland's new mayor jean quan. want to turn our attention to preventing violence in the community which is what the goal is even walking the streets. what is going on? deal withnk wh the problem right now. oakland, we call in with people on probation and check to see if they don't have guns in their home. that is p but in a city you have to look e young people. so i called for 2,000 mentors for oakland's toughest kids. 500 kids who get arrested for something each year. about 300 kids out of foster care, many of girls that are recruited into child prostitution are in foster care. they become homeless and they have an opportunity to stay in school or job program. about 1200 kids miss more than 20 days of school. if you miss 20 days of school you are less likely to keep up with your grades, therefore you are more likely to drop out. kids who drop out are more likely to be involved in crime. what i'm trying to restore that, go upstream and stop throwing kids into the river. what we've been doing in east oakland, we've

nbc's jean elie is following the story at sfo. >> it has been. it's kind of consumed me. and that's been a little difficult because i'm running a business. and i have a family of four children and a husband. >> reporter: melissa bradley is obsessed with child safety seats on airplanes. in the last two months, two flight crews stopped her from buckling her baby, sunshine, into a seat she paid for. one airline kicked her entire family off the plane because the safety seat didn't fit. even though faa regulations clearly state if a passenger buys a seat for an infant carrier, they must be accommodated. in both cases the airline said they made a mistake. >> oh, we made a mistake. our flight crew was uneducated. but really, i don't think that that that's an excuse. >> reporter: the bradleys buy a set for sunshine because they don't believe holding a baby is safe. bradley filed complaints with the faa and reached out to the ntsb. the more she shared her story, the more moms sent her e-mails detailing the same problem. >> this is definitely not a very, you know, rare occurrence.

during world war ii, jean holmes joined the waac. she was a 19-year-old who was from oregon, and while she was in basic training, she stood out from the others because she knew what the close order was because she belonged to the oregon women's ambulance corps before she joined the army. jeanette trained as a truck driver and found she thrived on army life. when world war ii was over she was discharged in 1945 and went off to college. meantime, this legislation did go through on the permanent course for the women's services and recruiting who served in world war ii now was going full total. so gene got a letter from the government and it included a post card which had no permanent corps listed on that and the newest one was the air force and jean told us i thought that sounded nice like it was something new and exciting. so i checked off the air force and with the post card in my mail and forgot all about. well, when the next break in college, gene decided she did want to go back into the army, so she had a friend named evelyn who al

let's before i in jean elie who joins us from albany.eally in the news like this, stories like this, but now a series of incidents are under investigation. what do you have? >> reporter: these incidents have really shocked the community here. the albany school district is very small. there's one high school and one middle school. parents and teachers here tell me it's very unusual to have trouble at either school. and now they have issues on both campuses. after students ate pot brownies and had scary reactions. kids playing basketball after school at albany middle school are talking about drugs. an ambulance arrived at school monday, taking a classmate to the hospital after she ate a marijuana brownie. >> kids have all been talked to about it. she talked to me about it. >> reporter: this parent heard about drugs at school from her sixth grader. >> it's kind of alarming, actually. right. how did it get there? what are they doing there? no, i think it's crazy. >> reporter: but she didn't know the middle school had two pot brownie incident
