jean mackin reports. jean: the 2015 report on the state of homelessness in new hampshire says the decline under way since 2011 has stalled. the annual count of new s homeless population reveals numbers haven' t changed much through 2014 and 2015. the new hampshire coalition to end homelessness says it is decline. >> we saw a small decrease. jean: the coalition said some factors point to improving conditions for the states homeless, like a 33% decrease in the number of people living on sheltered, outside come in cars, veterans are homeless , and the coalition says there' s an increase in the average income of the working poor. affordable housing remains a major challenge, and the coalition is concerned about an 8% rise in homeless families. >> that of course is very concerning because those are children and parents that are living in shelters who are on the streets. these are children, and these are our parents who are it' s about raising awareness, becoming informed, and talking to your legislators about h

our jean mackin shows us why. jean there' s a new neighbor here : on the corner of union and spruce streets in manchester a unique non-profit organization they' re rolling along inside the qc bike collective. the non-profit takes up the first floor of the neighbor works building this is a popular idea in other cities now manchester has its own community bike space. >> it' s a space to work on your own bike with our help, in addition, we take in donated bikes, rehab them and sell them at very reasonable prices. >> for kids, it keeps them off the street, it gives them something to do. i think we were surprised by learn how many adults use it for basic transportation. jean the manchester police : department saw the positive spin in this neighborhood and now plans to donate about 100 unclaimed bikes getting in gear. bike shops have pitched in, michael rennie helps out now >> they' re repurposing bicycles and providing them for the kids behind me as a good luck gift, as a token of appreciation >> kevin gaudette voluntee

jean mackin has the story from auburn. jean: police officers and firefighters in auburn have the situation under control now. but for a while the gifts for nearly 2 dozen children in need. were overflowing the safety complex here. >> we took over a couple offices of some of our officials here in the station. we took over a couple stairwells. jean: it all started when auburn' s first responders set up a giving tree with gift tags asking the community to become santa' s helpers for 8 families needing some christmas magic this year. the response, the generosity, was overwhelming. >> i never realized there would be this many toys we had to move >> every room of the police department had toys and gift wrapping it' s really amazing to see what can happen when the community comes together. >> it' s a tough time of year, and it' s tough to ask for help and we want them to know that we support them. jean: police officers and firefighters were surprised when they saw the children' s lists basic needs like coats and socks but with thi

jean: i' m jean mackin. this storm brings the first measurable snowfall for southern new hampshire. josh: we have live team coverage of today' s storm, which has been especially tough on drivers. let' s begin with meteorologist josh judge. josh: the roads have been very slick, partly because we had the snow but on top of it a lot of places have seen sleep, freezing rain and a little bit of playing rain as well. will take a look at a few of the numbers from around the state. most places in the state so far have been between two and six or seven inches but it is still that' s why the winter storm warning is still in effect until about 7:00 and winter weather advisory for the rest of the state until midnight. look at the wide range of ve had coming down in northern new hampshire. so the new hampshire, the radar makes it look like nothing is happening but there is freezing drizzle out there. . snow showers in parts of central and northern new hampshire. you can see occasional drizzle or freezing drizzle as we go through the nighttime hours. mid-20' s most places and we will degrees over

jean mackin joins us live with that. jean: imagine the shock of the passengers when they noticed the train was rolling past its stops and some turned to check on the train operator and realized no one was behind the controls. the 911 calls came in as quickly as red line train 1502 took off with no operator on board. >> i had a motor person who was operating on the train. he has a lower right leg laceration. jean: the mbta says the train operator, david vazquez, has more than 25 years experience with the t and he got permission to get off the train to switch it into bypass mode to allow the train the mbta is investigating if he properly applied the brakes inside the control room before exiting the train. the 6 car train rolled down the tracks, brushing the operator. it went from braintree to north quincy cruising through several stops. passengers on board say a few people panic. >> theres no conductor here. how come? how is that possible? so it was really bizarre. jean: passengers waiting for the train were puzzled. >> it

as jean mackin reports, road crews were already at work today getting ready themselves. jean: the state dot already hit the roads heading out monday morning to pre-treat with brine and they have plenty of this to the salt pile at the department of transportation in hooksett the d.o.t. says it' s only used one tenth of the supply that it used by this time last year. now road crews are ready to take on the first statewide snowfall of the season. and the dot hopes drivers are ready, too. >> many people, and this is what we' re concerned about, have been lulled into summertime driving conditions for the last 8 or 9 so they really need to get into winter driving mode. jean: the state' s largest city, manchester, is stocked up with 6500 tons of salt. and we found a few people stocking up at the store. >> i' ve earned my retirement. jean: pam and jack schelling are retired after a combined 80 years at psnh. he' s ready to ski. >> yes, i' ve skied on man-made twice and i' m ready for some natural snow. jean: she' s ready to enjoy this snow without worrying about everyone else' s

good evening and thank you for joining us, i'm jean mackin. josh: i'm josh mcelveen. investigators believe that ronald szettella is responsible for two armed robberies and a bomb threat. jean: as heather hamel explains, salem police are looking at szettella as well for a crime that involved a barack obama mask. reporter: yes, salem police assisted pelham when they searched the suspect's home and found evidence that connects him to crimes in both towns. while charges still haven't been brought in salem, pelham arrested szettella on three felonies, crimes that date back to 2013, the first was a bomb threat called in to an elementary school where he said he was going through a divorce and was hoping by making the call his kids would be released. more recently he's suspected of pulling off armed robberies at the gage hill farm convenience store in pelham this september as well as last september, and videos and then got a search warrant for szettella's house. >> almost all of the evidence that they needed as far as clothing that he wore when he made the bipartisan threat to

good evening, i'm jean mackin. josh: i'm josh mcelveen. 14 people died in that shooting and there are many new details coming to light tonight. that does include that new jean: right when investigators are searching several properties connected to the suspected shooters, we've learned that the female suspect had a passport from pakistan and came to the u.s. on a special visa after becoming engaged to the american man also suspected in this attack. we go now live to abc's brandi hitt, she's standing by in san bernardino tonight. reporter: detectives here at the crime scene have now identified all 14 victims killed in the building directly behind me. and the f.b.i. is now stepping in. agents are digging into the backgrounds of both gunmen. the arsenal of weapons they were packing. the terror that unfolded inside this san bernardino business complex leaving 14 people dead. >> shots going off like crazy. reporter: and culminated here into a police shootout, is now a massive crime scene. >> the suspects when they entered

josh: jean mackin has been there all afternoon. so, jean, how are things going? jean: hi, josh and shelley. what a great start to the toys for tots toy drive. once again we're at toys r us here in manchester and look at all the toys we collected on the very first day of this toy drive which lasts all weekend long. marine corps, we are joined by sergeant justin gordon who says we have topped 2,000 toys but a limb behind last year. rolling. now is like we need to get those toys in here. jean: toys like elmo. >> elmo. markers and crayons, toys like footballs. anything to give to the kids here in new hampshire and southern new hampshire. jean: once again we've topped 2,000 toys here in manchester. but we need a whole lot more throughout the weekend. we're hoping to collect 15,000 toys for the children of new hampshire. also, thanks to dunkin' donuts, they are giving $3 gift cards to good little boys and girls and their parents who come in to make toy donations, so that's another incentive to get on the nice list. >> the mission is to bring more toys for toys for tots

shelley: jean mackin has the history lesson from weare. jean: leon taylor holds onto the treasure his father stashed away 70 years ago. >> my father kept track fo the war, day by day i' ll tell you. jean: leon remembers it was a sunday, in 1945 when his father hid a time capsule inside a fireplace on the family land in weare. >> so he said i' ve taken some newspapers of the day and mother puts it in a canning jar and we' ll seal it up in the buttress of the fireplace. jean: now that he' wanted to go back in time. with the help of his family, they found that glass jar, inside the brick and mortar. >> they opened it up and sure enough, it was all about that day the japanese surrendered. jean: leon unearthed 1945 newspapers, still crisp and rich with history. >> especially the boston post, that was my newspaper. i loved that. i loved the way they made the headlines. jean: he got to see his father' s handwriting once again, blurred by the years, but right there like it was yesterday. and the ration stamps take leon right back to his days as a b

jean mackin spoke to firefighters who will be monitoring the scene overnight. jean: firefighters from a dozen towns spent hours battling the fire here in bedford. while they could not save the house, the family that lived here is safe. flames filled the 13,000 square foot home on burleigh terrace in bedford. around 12:30 tuesday afternoon, someone inside the house called to report smoke. the first arriving firefighters spotted flames shooting from the roof. they attempted to fight the fire inside, but were forced out and into a defensive operation. the bedford fire department says 5 adults and 2 children all members of the same family are safe. >> the property owner was home, they had some workers here and on arrival everyone was out of the building. jean: no one was hurt. even the family' s pet hamster was rescued. but there was no saving the home. firefighters poured up to 180,000 gallons of water onto the house. they say the closest hydrant is nearly a mile away, so they used a tanker shuttle to get water to the fire. >> they had multiple porta-tanks set up t

jean: i'm jean mackin. meteorologist josh judge is here to tell us how much snow we'll be getting. >> you might have thought we were going to make it out of 2015 without any snow, but no sir, we've got it on the way, moving in late tonight during the overnight hours into tomorrow morning. so plan on tomorrow morning being a rough commute. a winter storm warning in effect for the northern half of the state, that's the pink, and the brew color you see there a winter weather advisory issued by the national weather service. a broad look at the circulating system that's headed in our secondary low pressure system just over the ocean, and that will move in during the overnight hours, you can see the clouds already in advance of that system taking over our skies, and the temperatures are already in perfect position to produce snow instead of rain like we've been seeing so many times in the weeks prior. so the temperatures will stay cold tonight, many of us getting into the single digits up north and teens everywhe

jean: i' m jean mackin. this fire was reported just over an hour ago. wmur' s adam sexton is live at the scene with the latest. reporter: this is now a three alarm response. multiple towns responding. it is a rural area, which means there are no fire hydrants and water has been a concern. flames were able to spread extensively. we were able to show you video from earlier at 3:30 this afternoon. this home at 561 black brook is a large home. it is 3200 square feet. visually, we can tell you it has a lot of eves. flames have spread extensively through the structure. some of the firefighters we talked to expect to be here long into the night. in the last 30 minutes, we spoke to chief richard o' brien. he says no one was home at the time of the fire. no injuries. that is a positive. but the home appears to be a total loss. we will give you updates as they become available and more later on at 6:00. adam sexton, wmur news 9. josh: the man suspected of causing a crash that injured several secret service agents did not have a valid driver' s license. that drive

jean: good evening, thank you for joining us, i'm jean mackin. josh: i'm josh mcelveen. a local school district decided to cancel dances because of what officials say is inappropriate behavior. jean: heather hamel is live now with more on why exeter superintendent of schools says a highly publicized sexual assault case was the tipping point for him. reporter: superintendent morgan says the owen labrie case in felt with sexually suggestive dancing going on in exeter with no foreseeable change on the horizon, a ban on dances was the prudent thing to do. he says for eight years he and past principles have tried to curb this behavior. the principle says students often dance in groups with moves of a sexual nature. he says some students are uncomfortable with what goes on, so after a lot discussion they decided to cancel future dances indefinitely. some support it, others say they don't think anyone would have crossed the line. >> you'd like to think that some people would have some respect for personal boundaries and things like that. >> it's just dancing, i think, nothing re

jean: i'm jean mackin. tonight new details about a father of a 21-month-old girl who has been accused of placing the child on top of a wall on the other side of a safety railing. this was near the merrimack river in manchester. josh: andy hershberger is live there tonight with our top story. reporter: police say the child was on top of this concrete wall on the wrong side of a safety railing, with the rushing waters of the merrimack to the child's back. police have charged the child's father, 32-year-old matthew jordan, with two counts of reckless conduct saying he swung the girl over the safety railing and let her stand there on her own. court documents say there were several 911 calls saying witnesses thought an adult was letting a child get too close to the river. court records say a police officer arrived on scene and saw jordan place the child on the cell phone. >> the officer was immediate and swift in his actions, he advised the man to grab the child and bring him back to the proper side of the fence
