and now, for the first time, governor jerry brown is questioning whether the bridge will be able to openhedule. first it was the problem of the bolts. 32 of them cracked on the eastern foundation of the self- anchored suspension span. then more cracks were found in 20 wells at the eastern base. now, there's corrosion. problems could delay the labor day opens of the span. daniel villareal reports. >> reporter: at issue, whether some of the steel cables stretch through these holes in each section of roadway back in 2006 and 2007 became corroded and if so, if that impacts the safety of the new span. >> moisture during the construction process, six or seven years ago. moisture entered some of the ducts that the cables were in before they could be sealed and so we experienced a bit of corrosion. >> reporter: bay bridge spokesman andrew gordon says testing was done at the time and experts were brought in. only 2% of the cables were damaged and the damage was minimal. >> it affected less than two% and of that, that 2% lost 5% strength. but that was not below the minimum strength needed for the
