jessica. >> reporter: thanks, steve. let's get to the watches and warnings because we're not the only ones that are dealing with the snow this morning. look at the watches and the warnings stemming from the midwest toward the northeast. the areas that are pink under the winter storm warning which is what we're under. you can see some red. we will get to that in just a minute. right now we're under the winter storm warning which is in effect until 10:00 a.m. at 10:00 a.m. the winds have started to pick up. at 10:00 a.m. the blizzard warning is going to kickoff so the northern portions of maryland and along the new jersey coast they're going to deal with blizzard conditions because of the limited visibility and the strong, gusty winds are going to allow for snow up there. winds greater than 35 miles an hour and lasting for three hours and longer. that is what we're going to have. we are going to continue with the accumulating snow. as of midnight bwi thurgood marshal are airport reported 4 inches. we could see an additiona

it's done as you heard from jessica downtown. dry scan right now. this is going to be the story for the rest of this morning and the rest of today and tomorrow, in fact drier conditions for the central part of the state as we go to the city, you can see there was snow moving through earlier that has now dissipated and moving points east moving off the eastern shore as well. we are seeing improvement. we had a winter storm warning that was supposed to last through 7:00 a.m., and the winter storm advisory for the eastern shore has expired, earlier than expected. can you see the little bit of snow moving out and the little bit of sleet. that is where we saw the heaviest snow, one spot in salisbury, 6.25 inches there. as we head downtown we picked up 4.5 inches around there. this storm behaved just like vytis reed said it would behave. 3.75 to almost 4.5 and an inch. 3 inches in jarrettsville, also toward the north and east a little bit lesser amounts there. 2.5 or so inches toward northeast in port deposit, and about 2 to 3 inches there. right now look

here is meteorologist jessica starr. >> thank you, vytas. >>well, this is a dangerous storm. that's why we have blizzard warnings in effect right now for baltimore city, and dc. pg county. arundel county, harford county and counties on the eastern shore. so we also have the winter storm warning, both of the warnings are in effect until 10:00 tomorrow. so we have to deal with the system overnight. and for the daytime for tomorrow. so how much snow can we see from the system? well here is what we are going to shoot for. 20-to 30 inches is what we could expect to see. that's almost 3 feet of snow. for most of the state of maryland. for central maryland, down through dc and northern virginia. eight to 14 inches for the oakland maryland. and southern tip of the dell mall marva, 12 to 18. so we have seen -- this is radar cade snowfall totals. snow started to fall today. right around noon. and takes time for the air to be saturated. but really the snow intensity has picked up here in the past couple of hours. so around 3 1/2 inches in baltimore. and again, this is just radar indicat

jessica doyle has been monitoring the situation there. jessica, what do you have?eporter: i'll tell you the gusting is picking up. it is incredibly cold out here when the wind blows. we've been seeing a lot of wind kicking up the snow already accumulated on the ground. the snow goes ho -- horrize on theal. and this is where emergency crews are staying from out of town and they're coming in from other cities to help out the washington area because of the sheer amount of snow that we've received. we also want to let you know, this one location, this is king street and royal street, we've seen one plow come down back and forth since we've been here, since about 3:30 this morning. a lot of accumulation s -- since then. and also directing your attention to this walkway behind me, we have seen ice flying off of the building. this is the pnc bank building. we've seen the collapse of an overhang. and be careful walking around. people are out taking their dogs for a walk, so be very, very careful from the flying ice coming off of the trees. so urge folks, if you have to go

here is what we're looking at, jessica, take a look.dar dry scan right now, looking pretty good as we check out the image and get closer looking downtown. earlier we saw our share of snow and you can see as it has moved out of here and only what is left a couple of snow flakes in spots to the east if at all and the highest elevations to the west. we're looking a whole lot better than earlier when we saw 6.25 inches at salisbury, indicating that it could be very varied in a small area, 3.5 inches in delaware, and 3 inches toward cambridge and toward pocomoke city. an average of 6.50 inches. up to the north and west 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 inches there. and as we head toward the north central part of the state jarrettsville, 3 inches there. 2.5 inches northeast and port deposit, 2 and over 3.25 inches there. this is pretty much on target with what chief meteorologist vytis reed s saying last night. -- was saying last night. there could be icing over some the surfaces out there. be careful. 33 in d.c., 34 in salisbury. the is this is just the previ

meteorologist jessica starr is here to tell you about it. jessica. >> reporter: yeah, steve, we're not the only ones dealing with this system. it's a large powerful system. look at all of the watches and warnings, pretty much the state of michigan covered and the ohio valley they're still dealing with the watches and warnings and we're under a winter storm warning. you can see the area of red zooming a little bit closer, that is because we have going to have blizzard warnings. we will start off with the winter storm warning this is still in place until 10:00 a.m., but then that actually expires and then we're going to go into a blizzard warning that is going to take place from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. look at that the northern tier of maryland, the northern portions of the delmarva peninsula and the new jersey coast lines will experience blizzard like conditions later today. we will see 6-10 inches on the high for snow accumulation if the colder air makes it in here and we will see the snowier side and the main concern will be the strong gust

jessica doyle is live in alexandria with more. where are you, jessica in. >> well, andrea, we're on king street and south royal. we had an emergency crew vehicle drive past us and you can pretreat but once that snow covers the pretreatment you are out of luck. we have to tell you this morning the city of alexandria declared a blizzard warning until 7 p.m. tonight. that alert went out at 8 a.m. this morning. you know, part of that, they are telling people to stay home. they are asking you to clear off your hydrants and we have a clear hydrant here. the reason this hydrant is clean is because this spot where we are at is 15 to 20 national guardsmen are staying and emergency crews from other locals who have come to alexandria to help out because the situation is so dire here. so much snow accumulation. the city hasn't been able to keep up with it. i want to tell you about the roads. we have people walking on the roadways because there is no sidewalk. there is caution tape it is because of the risk risk of falling snow. so much wind a

jessica doyle is keeping an eye on things in tysons corner this morning. good morning, jess. >> reporter: hi there, andrea w -- we are here at the intersection of international drive and 123 in tysons corner. as you can see, traffic is moving briskly through the area. that's because the roads have been streeted and -- treated and plowed and things are looking very, very good for the main roadways. the side streets, though, are touch and go and we caught up with jimmy with vdot safety services for some driving tips. here's what he told us this morning. >> just kind of take your time. even though the snow is not really accumulated on the roads right now just take your time and keep in mind it is cold and there's possibility of ice. we have a lot of sand down and stuff like that, and just kind of take your time and don't push it. >> if you push it, then you could wind up in a median on one of the highways. something i saw twice on the drive to work. even though the roads are in a good situation. we have a plow behind us. it took 20 to 30 minutes for another p

jessica doyle has more from tysons corner. she's near the beltway. >> reporter: we are reporting from tysons corner, virginia at chain bridge road and international drive, a main thoroughfare here in tysons corner where we got three to four inches of snow with this overnight storm. the bulk of the storm was at 3:00 this morning and that was good news. it gave vdot plenty of time to hit the roads with convoys of trucks. they were plowing, spreading de- icer on the roads and getting ready for the commute and the hard work paid off. we had a smooth commute here in tysons corner. the main roads were in great shape. a lot of the roads looked like a rain event rather than a snow event. a lot of water on the roads but that doesn't mean commuters didn't have some issues. >> right now the roads are looking good other than being wet and stuff. they have been keeping them good and keeping on top of it. other than the side streets i have seen, the main roads look like really good. >> the side streets can be challenging and vdot will conti

one of those people who got to work early this morning, jessica doyle. she's live in alexandria, virginia, and the snow is falling on you and belated happy birthday. we didn't get a chance to say that to you yesterday. >> it is a winter wonderland and perhaps the greatest birthday present i received is the fact i woke up this morning with only two inches on the ground falls church. the snow is really coming down now. it is very picturesque and the roads look pretty good. i drove from falls church, virginia, took columbia pike to 395, drove around the micking bowl a little bit to see what it was like and came in here, i'm at king and royal street in alexandria. the roads are down to pavement on the main drag. you can see people driving. this woman is driving around the corner. people are driving at speed or above on the major highways because it is just that good out there until you hit alexandria. i want to show you what i found here. this is going to give you the impression of what is on the roadways. this is a hunk of ice and almost as hard as a brick.
