let's go to weather channel meteorologist jim cantore in dallas. and jim, talk us through where this is headed. >> reporter: well, brian, nothing could come good of this. today if you look at the temperature map, jordan, montana, was 30 degrees below zero while orlando, florida, was at 85. that's a 115-degree temperature spread. two storms. the first one continues to move up through the mississippi valley and heading into the northeast with ice and snow. but here's the second storm with advisories all the way to the coastline and into california and nevada again. let's take it by piece. saturday, after the storm produces snow on the las vegas strip it comes back out with ice and sleet once again in these same areas that got it today. sunday the snow pushes across washington, d.c., possibly as far north as new york. it will change to rain there, but not before a messy rush hour along i-95. once the storm pulls out the nation is left in the deep freeze with record setting low for the southwest. >> jim cantore for us in dallas on a friday night. jim, t

we want to check in with meteorologist jim cantore from dallas.bly colder than here, in fact. >> reporter: we're sit ageting 5 degrees. you're right. it is cold. the problem is we're going down to 19 tonight. even though the roads have improved swimmingly since our ice event this morning, we'll refreeze all of this tonight. my hats off to the texas department of transportation. so, here we go. let me just set the stage for you. we get a quarter to half inch of ice. then we get 3 to 4 inches of sleet on top of that. they're salting, they did all the prework yesterday with the pre-emergence and pretty much kept these areas clear. especially the high overpasses. even though the cars are moving slowly, they seem to be moving along a little faster, certainly, than they were this morning when it was just absolutely glare ice through here. the real problems have been at the airports. i mean, we've had 1300 flights cancel today in and out of dallas/ft. worth. a normal day with traffic out of dfw is about 1700 aircraft. so, three-quarters of the flights at

weather channel's jim cantore has the latest. >> reporter: i expect to get hammered on by snow when i'm out here. that did not happen here in baltimore, at least in the downtown area. north and west, 20, 40 miles, 70 miles, anywhere from 4 to 6 inches of snow. and actually it was a rough commute coming in. the winter storm warnings verified swimmingly. here in the downtown area, we didn't snow at an intense enough rate, right around 3 degrees, we needed a couple degrees cooler to get this to stick. you can see where it did stick on the grass. now the piles that you see, all right, that one, this one, that came from sunday's little overachieving storm we had where we had exactly 1.6 inches at bwi airport. either way travel was horrible to say the least this morning along the i-95 and many routes north and west of the major metropolitan areas. cool off for thursday, big chill, teens, piles like this will become solid ice chunks and as we look into the weekend, another winter storm comes calling. this one more than likely for new york, d.c., philly and baltimore. will be sleet changing qui

the weather channel's jim cantore is in dallas with more. jim, how is it there?er: yeah, it's pretty nasty. a raw day in dallas, the upper 20s, the winds are blowing out of the north at about 25 miles per hour. we've got moderate sleet coming down. and that actually may be our saving grace here. these little pellets that come out of the sky of sleet don't tend to accumulate on trees and power lines. however, we've had at times freezing drizzle, as well, and that's been the biggest issue here. the roads are actually pretty decent if you don't go too fast. but notice this pin oak here with the leaves still on it. huge area of ice accretion. a tremendous area of weight added to the tree. the wind is pretty much the kicker in what eventually takes the trees down. we've got 130,000 now without power. and considering this is a metro area of about 6 million, that's not too bad. but i think as we go on through the day and this continues, we've still got a lot of power outages to go, guys. and there's another round of freezing rain on the way for arkansas, for north texas
the weather channel's jim cantore is in dallas with more. jim, how is it there?er: yeah, it's pretty nasty. a raw day in dallas, the upper 20s, the winds are blowing out of the north at about 25 miles per hour. we've got moderate sleet coming down. and that actually may be our saving grace here. these little pellets that come out of the sky of sleet don't tend to accumulate on trees and power lines. however, we've had at times freezing drizzle, as well, and that's been the biggest issue here....
