jim dolan is at the scene with the latest. jim. >> reporter: bill , the sidewalks on 2nd avenue are always packed at 4:30 in the afternoon on a beautiful summer afternoon. they were even more this car jumped the curve two pedestrians on the sidewalk. a woman was seriously hurt, another woman was struck with only minor injuries. the driver of this vehicle claims that he had to swerve to avoid a blue four door nissan that had swerved in front of him. it cut him off. that's why he had to swerve. that's why he went up on the curve. the driver of this vehicle said the police are on the scene investigating right now. again, one woman seriously injured when this silver car here jumps the curve on 2nd avenue. it was a wild scene. a lot of people on the street. doctors from a near by clinic ran out here to see if they could help that women while waiting for the ambulance. she was taken to bellevue hospital and seriously injured. jim dolan, channel 7, eyewitness news. >> thank you. >>> new york senator charles schumer speaking publicly a

jim dolan with the latest. jim. >> reporter: bill, the number of new cases of legionnaire's in the city appears to be declining, but even that picture has yet to come into sharp focus, and it may be days before it does. for now, federal government stepping in to help out. >> i'm an easy target, you know. >> reporter: wendy has pulmonary disease, the exact kind of condition that leaves the body too weak to fend off legionnaire's which has now killed 10 people in the south bronx. >> this is an incredibly populated area. a lot of people, a cooling tower, and trying to figure out how something like this starts. >> reporter: the state health department came in today, and they're calling in backup from the national centers for disease control to see if any additional steps need to be taken. the city is now requiring all landlords with cooling towers like these to have them tested for legionella in the next two weeks. cooling towers on five buildings in the south bronx have already tested positive. here's abc's dr. ric

tonight his step daughter talking to eyewitness news reporter jim dolan. >> carmelo had emphysema and diabetes. but until last week he could still get around okay. every day he'd walk up 1 frightening street to catch a bus. so every day he'd walk past the beautiful opera house hotel on 149th street. it's one of several places where cooling towers tested positive for legionella. >> reporter: she was with her husband for 43 years. now she and her family sit in a dark bronx apartment wondering what happened. suddenly on thursday carmelo was too weak to answer the door of his home. >> probably at the door 7 minutes when i told my brother he had to go downstairs and get someone to open the door for us. when they finally came up, he was on the floor. >> reporter: carmelo died from legionnaires disease. he had a number of pre-existing conditions like asthma and diabetes. the ideal host for the disease to rage unchecked, but the family blames the city. >> i feel that they were in a way negligent because the first time that they found out about it, they could have just started doing something

jim dolan with the latest. >> the mayor among them. he insists the city has gotten control of the legionnaires' outbreak even as two more tested positive. one of them here at the daughters of jacob nursing home where the elderly are at greatest risk. >> reporter: charlie lives at the daughters of jacob nursing home in the south bronx and like a lot of people here, he doesn't share the mayor's rosy optimism. >> what's very important to note is we have no evidence over the last few days of any new cases of legionnaires'. the last day someone became sick with legionnaires' was august 3rd. >> reporter: the mayor showed charts that shows the legionnaires' outbreak in the south bronx in decline. still, there are 113 cases now. two more people died for a total of 12 and now 12 cooling towers have tested positive, two more than the end of last week. the state has gotten more involved. >> i am comfortable with the state's action. i think we have been aggressive. i think the aggressiveness was called for. >> reporter: the governor and mayor held

eyewitness news reporter jim dolan is in rockland county with the very latest. jim. >> reporter: well, liz, this was a violent collision, head- on collision, two trucks traveling in opposite directions this morning, one driver lost control, veered into the other lane. the driver of the car who lost -- of the truck that lost control, he died in the collision. his passenger died in the collision. this all left behind, a traffic mess that won't be cleared up for hours: the southbound lanes were littered with what was left of two trucks that collided head on this morning along with other cars involved in the crash, it was sudden and violent and happened when a truck traveling northbound on lost control. >> one of the box trucks that was involved in the collision attempted to pass another vehicle, one of the other box trucks and when he attempted to merge back into traffic from the right lane back into the middle lane, he lost control of the vehicle and ended up -- he ended up going across the guide rail and struck a tractor- southbound on interstate 7. >> reporter: t

his stepdaughter talked to jim dolan. >> reporter: she was with her husband 43 years. now she and her family sit in a darkened bronx apartment wondering what happened. suddenly on thursday, carmelo was too weak to answer the door of his home. >> at the door maybe 7 minutes when i told my brother he had to go downstairs and get someone to open the door for us. when they finally came up, he was on the floor. >> reporter: he was taken to montefiore medical center where he died. he had a number of preexisting conditions like asthma and diabetes. the ideal host for the disease to rage unchecked. but the family blames the city. >> in a way they were negligent because the first time that they found out about it, they could have done something bit before letting it spread throughout the bronx. >> this is not the time to let an older member of your family say i don't want to go to the doctor. these the time that we have to really encourage people to seek care. >> the city made real progress combating the spread of the disease which is spread by a mist that comes from cooling to

reporting live, jim dolan, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> okay, jim, thank you. >>> we have more breaking news. letter the death toll in the deadly legionnaires outbreak bronx. >> we learned of two more deaths bringing the total to 10. 100. the city is requiring that every building in new york city with a cooling tower and there inspected and disinfected. >> marcus solis is in the melrose section of the bronx with more. marcus? >> reporter: sade and diana, the city said it believes the worst of the outbreak is over. we are seeing numbers rise albeit more slowly. still, they did reach significant levels today. the number of cases hit triple digits and the number of fatalities is in the double digits. >> i am an easy target, you know. >> reporter: wendy rivera's concern is understandable, a south bronx resident with pulmonary disease and asthma, she is at high risk for legionnaires' disease. the number of cases is 100, ten fatal. mayor de blasio announced that any building with a cooling tower will have the system tested asap. >> the order instructs the owners or manager to test and disinfe

jim dolan joins us from the ground with the latest. jim? >> reporter: sade you can see it where we are standing. let's go over here. you can see where the damage was earlier this afternoon when fire flared up. they still don't know why it happened. you can get a better view from newscopter 7 a short while ago when that -- when workers were still over there trying to get things back under control here. there was a hold on all traffic in to and out of penn station. that hold has been lifted. some service resumed in to and out of newark penn. 45 minute delays at least on the northeast corridor, raritan value help line, path service delayed. the good news is there was no structural damage so when they got the fire under control and took a look, service was able to resume. that is what has happened now. afternoon. timing. things are starting to resume. we are seeing a lot of trains. long delays, as long as 45 minutes out of new york.
