joining me now, jim messina.eground states trying to drum up every last voter. how do you see this race? you are looking at two things in particular for kamala harris. that makes you more enthusiastic. >> trump had enthusiastic voters. she has a major lead on enthusiasm. i think in a close election, really matters. the second thing is, her and her campaign -- and a little the biden campaign before this -- has spent a year and a half building the largest ground army in the history of american politics. ground can get you a point move in a tight race. you would love to have that. trump has outsourced his to elon musk and other billionaires. what we learned in 2004 is you can't outsource. you need do it on your own. those are two things that make me more optimistic. >> you argue she has more room to grow. >> here is why. she's in her 92nd day as a candidate. of the voters who are undecided -- they think about politics four minutes a week. 60% are women. they don't know enough about her. a fifth say they don't know e

at the top of my list to talks about these sorts of questions as former obama campaign manager jim messina has graciously agreed to join us each sunday for the next three weeks to answer three big questions about the state of the race and give you all a sense about what is really going on. it is so great to see you. thank you for being here. let me start with the first question. if you are the harris campaign and you have been the campaign manager in the final weeks of a winning campaign, what was the best thing that happened this week? >> real-life humans voting. it is so exciting. every night now, you get a spreadsheet about how many people are voting and what percentage of them are democrats, which are republicans. in georgia, we are double the pace of 2020, the covid year. it's unbelievable how many people are voting in some of the swing states. >> such a good point. you can cross those off the list of people you don't need to try to get out to vote on election day, which is why it's also encouraging. if you are running a campaign, as you have run, there's time to go here, so it's not

jim messina and karl rove. let's go, guys, you look at the numbers every day. where is the race now? go. >> coin toss. rather be him than her because he has a lead on the economy, inflation and border. but this is tied and anybody who tells you how this will turn out -- every morning i take real clear politics and silver bulletin and take the numbers for each one of the battleground states. we have 21 data points. in two instances out of that 21 the lead for in this case donald trump is two points or better. five the lead for either him or her is between one and 2% and 14 of them are less than 1%. it's a toss-up. >> dana: does she have momentum that she needs to try to close this out? if it is a coin toss do you think she can edge ahead. >> i think she can. she has room to growth. voters say they don't know enough about her. she is investing hundreds of millions of dollars in a ground operation and karl is right. this is a coin toss race. if it's a coin toss race their bet is they can win it ton ground. >> bill: "the new york times" last night watched the town

you know, we just heard jim messina saying that as a candidate, kamala harris didn't have enough time to grow as a candidate. now, isn't being the understudy for three years and ten months of the president of the united states enough time to grow into the race? you could argue that if the race were longer, she would be in even worse shape, because as time goes on, and the more she has to do publicly, the worse her poll numbers get. and the more independents are going over to the trump campaign. and what did they expect? i mean, they had an option to do an open convention to have tried and true candidates who maybe have won elections before, not just the us senate, but but maybe gone through a primary process and lost, but who have been tested. and they decided not to do that. they decided to get behind kamala harris, assuming that she would win. joe biden pushed against it and was forced out. and now they're going to blame biden for not getting out sooner. i mean, you have barack obama saying that maybe biden was a better choice at this point. and so i think that if she were on the ca

i spoke with a grass roots organizer this morning who said the same thing jim messina has been sayingcold hard numbers. you predicted pole aggregators are going to shift their models to favor harris. what makes you think that? >> they're going to finally see what i have been seeing is this race has been very stable with a 2 or 3 point, 4 point harris lead, and we saw that in the abc poll that just came out, a four-point harris lead. a two polls came out, that's a 2 1/2 point lead. i think they're going to finally see the data and wade themselves through the junk gop polls. there have been 70-odd junk gop polls put in the mix in the last two or three weeks that have people gaming the system. unfortunately, many people are played by that, and they freak out or do whatever. i think those aggregators are going to realize, uh-oh, the numbers are showing something different than what we have been saying over the last two weeks. >> matthew dowd, always good to see you and talk to you. thanks, matt, appreciate it. >>> coming up on "chris jansing reports," misinformation caused chaos in the wa

we have jim messina. he served as white house deputy chief of staff to president obama. e projections, democrats freaking out, republicans openly and so-called independent reporters mocking democrats about how badly they were going to get beaten. i was thinking of that time yesterday when four polls released. three of them had kamala harris up three points, and the nbc poll had it tied. i spent a day and a half talking people down, like talking people down, as if the stock market, like, had crashed in 1929. there's the nbc poll. it shows a tie. the daily tracking had a three-point lead. this is abc news poll, two-point lead. i know these national polls don't matter, these national polls don't matter. but, you know what, i don't want to hear people say the national polls don't matter when harris is three points up, yet they melt down when it's a tie. i remember 2022, you left the set. i said is there going to be a red wave? you go, i don't know, i don't know. i'm not going to watch tv until 8:00 or 9:00 tonight because everything before that is going to be wrong. it's like

jim messina, if you could comment, he didn't even mention dobbs, he didn't even mention women's healthon this. this is how they did better than expected in the 2022 election, where everyone except people on the show gave them grief about the way they closed in 2022. they're going back to this playbook because it works and because it sets up the contrast we talked about earlier, mika, that is important. trump is in it for himself and she's in it for you, and that ending is the right way to end a campaign. >> and katty kay, obviously, as jim has been saying this morning a powerful vision image one week before election day for the vice president to be standing at the elipse and to bring home and remind people what a trump presidency looked like and what it may look like again. >> yeah, and it does two things, right? it reminds everybody of that speech that donald trump gave before the crowd that then went down and stormed the capitol on january 6th. we were all there. we were all watching, and you are going to have exactly the same images behind her. it is a visual reminder of the chaos o
