nbc bay area's jody hernandez is live in oakland where the shooting is is on the heels of the highly charged oscar grant case. >> reporter: oakland police held a press conference to give their account of what led up to the shooting. friends and family showed up to the police station, too. they said eric jones was a kind and gentle father who wouldn't hurt a fly. >> derrick was just a joy to be around. he was very funny. what can i say, i mean, he was a very good young man. >> reporter: that's how 37-year-old derrick jones' friends and family describe him. but police say the parolee who owned an east oakland barber shot violently attacked a woman last night, then ran from police. >> this man choked her, and struck her repeatedly and slammed her head repeatedly. >> reporter: police say jones led them on a foot chase and appeared to be reaching for a weapon when they opened fire and killed him. >> he turned around, and then placed his hands once again down towards his waistband. the entire time the officers are yelling for the man to get his hands up. and everything i'm telling you has

jodi hernandez is live with an exclusive interview with todd mehserle. >> reporter: tom, i spent about a half hour with todd mehserle this afternoon. he told me how incredibly proud he is of his son and how he handled the pressure of this entire ordeal, how relieved he is by what happened in court on friday, but he also made it very clear. johannes and his family feel extreme remorse and that's something they hope the grant family will eventually believe. >> when he walked into that courtroom with the potential of getting 14 years. >> reporter: johannes mehserle's father says mehserle and his family feared the worst friday. >> i thought i may watch my son go to prison, and i might not even live long enough to see him get out. that was my fear walking into that courtroom. >> reporter: but instead they heard the judge vocalize what he says they have known from the start. judge robert perry said the evidence is overwhelming the shooting was an accident, and he believed oscar grant was in fact resisting before mehserle mistakenly shot him with a gun. >> the first thing he said and he empha
