nbc's joe fryer now with the tapes and the latest on the investigation. capture a mother's frantic moments after her 3-year-old son fell into the gorilla enclosure at the cincinnati zoo. at times the 420-pound silverback gorilla named harambe could be seen pulling the boy across the moat. eventually zoo officials decided to shoot and kill the gorilla. today the boy's family released a new statement saying the child had a checkup with his doctor and is still doing well. we continue to be thankful to the cincinnati zoo for their actions taken to protect our child. zoo officials say it appears the boy went over a 3-foot barrier and through several bushes before falling 15 feet into the moat. cincinnati police say they'll review the actions of the boy's family leading up to the incident. the family has reportedly received death threats, and online nearly half a million people have signed a petition calling for the boy's mother to be charged. police will not be investigating the zoo, but the association of zoos and aquariums which accredits zoos will look into

joe fryer is live at a position between the nightclub and the hospital, joe? >> reporter: that's right, brian. we're closer to the nightclub now. it is just half a block away. you can see the giant "p" that says pulse over my shoulder. a large law enforcement presence here. we know many of the victims are still inside of the nightclub. just about two or three blocks north of here is one of the hospitals, a trauma center, where many of the victims were taken immediately after this shooting and where dozens have been treated so far. we received a statement from the owner of pulse nightclub just moments ago. i want to make sure to read that to you. she says like everyone in the country i'm devastated about the horrific events that have taken place today. pulse and the men and women who work there have been my family for many years. it's a place of love and acceptance. i want to express my sadness and condolences to all those that have lost loved ones. she actually started this nightclub after her brother died from aids as a remembrance to her. it is a part of the

nbc's joe fryer has the latest. >> reporter: these tense moments captured on video have captivated the world. the cincinnati investigators are concerned with what happens right before a 3-year-old boy fell into the gorilla enclosure. their review was only regarding the actions of the parents'/family that led up to the incident. a complaint has been filed by animal rights activists. >> what happened this last weekend made it very clear that the physical barriers at the cincinnati zoo are not adequate. >> reporter: the eyewitness who shot the video said the little boy seemed curious about the gorilla pen. >> the little boy himself had already been talking about wanting to go in, go in, get in the water. >> reporter: zoo officials says it appears the boy climbed over a barrier that's a little more than 3 feet high making his way through bushes before falling 15 feet into the moat with harambe. at times, the 420-pound silverback gorilla dragged the boy around the enclosure before the zoo decided to shoot harambe. the controversial decision supported by some of the country's top experts. >>

joe fryer has been able to move closer. he's outside the regional medical center there in orlando. joe? >> reporter: yeah, brian, we were right by the pulse nightclub, which is actually just a few blocks from the hospital. we have now moved to the hospital where a number of people are being treated. this trauma center is located two or three blocks from the nightclub. those that were injured were able to move here. we know this health care system has treated more than 40 patients so far. 26 surgeries we're told performed so far today. i want to bring in patty. she is the city commissioner for this district. i'm going to have you come in here a little bit closer. i know this has been an incredibly hard day for you. how are you doing right now? >> it's been a horrible day. i go from wearing my city commissioner hat and just trying to help people and on the other hand i'm the first openly gay elected official. this happened in my community, and it was late at night. this is a very diverse community. this is really the heart of our downtown. city hall is only a couple blocks away. this

nbc's joe fryer has the latest on this. morning. >> reporter: matt, an emergency court hearing is taking place this morning to discuss the whereabouts of michael borcina. he was asked to turn over some construction documents as part of a lawsuit stemming from that fire but right now some of the attorneys in this case are saying he's nowhere to be found. it's the latest mystery surrounding a christmas day fire that killed madonna badger's three children and both of her parents. where is michael borcina? in a court filing, attorneys for the city of stamford say they've been informed that mr. borcina cannot in fact be located. it's unclear what efforts have been made to locate him. they also state in late may borcina's attorney said he's been unsuccessful in his attempts to contact mr. borcina and doesn't know where he's presently located. nbc news reached out to borcina's attorney but has not heard back. >> the judge might decide the contractor is in contempt of court. he failed to provide key evidence to another party. that

joe fryer remains at the scene not far at all from the pulse nightclub. now such a sad, sad logo to see. joe? >> brian, good evening here now from the pulse nightclub. we are just half a block away. still a heavy police presence. the public being kept away. it will be that way for quite some time. we're told 39 of the victims died inside the club. two more of the victims died outside of the club, and the remaining nine victims were taken to the hospital according to the hospital and nine died after they were admitted to the hospital. so we know that 39 victims did die inside of the club. this all started at 2:00 in the morning right around the time of last call. many of the witnesses tell us that what they first heard, they weren't sure if it was gunfire. they thought it might have been something to do with the music or speakers, and then as people started to run they realized this was actually a mass shooting situation. there was actually a uniformed officer off duty working at the nightclub who exchanged gunfire with the suspect omar mateen, and we're al

joe fryer joining me live outside of pulse in orlando. what is the latest from the theresce scene? >> reporter: we're about half a block away and you can see the big sign that says pulse with the giant p, still a very large law enforcement presence here. the road has been blocked up to the point where we're standing. cars cannot get this close. some people in the public though are walking up just trying to get a look at what is happening here at this very active scene. what we know is that many of the victims are still inside the pulse night club. this is going to be a long slow investigation. . the process now to try to identify the victim which is will take time, then notify their relatives before releasing their names. we're heard that the city of orlando has set up a website which will list off the names of the vehicictims once identified once next of kin is notified. that should given you an idea of just how massive this situation is that a website has to be set up in order to notify the public and others about some of these victims. we know a number of concerned people have b

nbc's joe fryer is here. scheduled. >> there are already so many events planned and in the coming weeks there will be more security as those events unfold the next couple of weeks here. these are normally moments of celebration but now they have become moments of mourning. just yesterday alone a number of different vigils were held and other festivities to try to remember the victims here in orlando. that includes at the stone wall inn, which is the birth place of the gay rights muchovement, the site of the 1969 riots in response to police raids. it was a gathering place where a number of people went as soon as they heard about the news of what happened here in orlando and a vigil was held there last night. there were events throughout the entire country. in washington, d.c., the gay men's chorus sang the national anthem. in boston, there was a moment of silence at events there. keep in mind boston knows full well the impact of terror with the boston marathon bombings just a few yearsago. and then of course in
