we are joined this morning by civil rights attorney john burris, who represented the late rodney king. john, thank you so much for joining us this morning. obviously a lot of comparisons, i loving the similarities between what happened right nicking in tyre nichols. but i want to start with this first question. in the obituary for rodney king, he had been interviewed about his arrest, and he said quote, it made the world a better place. i have to get your reaction drawn. that was 1991. 2023, how is this still happening, as we saw tyre nichols? >> i will say that the words in fact weren't true in the sense that things did change substantially. it was really the first time that a general white population had a chance to see that level of police brutality, which the black community had seen all of the time. and so that to me was the opening of the door for this window of how african americans are treated by the police. there's been steady progress since then and the most important thing has been the cell phones and the cameras. some departments have engaged in reform, and ronnie king cer

joining me now is john burris who represented rodney king after this beating. the video of tyre nichols, that video tonight, but the comparison that people are making that have seen this video, comparing it to rodney king, what do you think that means? >> well it means that the police were out of control and that they were beating a person senseless without any justification for it. certainly in rodney king's case there was a beating that went on and on and they were trying to beat him in submission and as a consequence of that he received terrible, terrible injuries many of which he never really recovered from. i don't think that he ever recovered to go back to being king, rodney king that he was before. so these kind of beatings adversely effected him and most damaging way, but it also effected the community as well. because in those days, look, there wasn't this outcry in support of rodney king. the black community was outraged but the vast majority was not because they have never seen this type of beating before. so rodney king was the first time that polic
