charlie sykes, msnbc contributor, and juanita tolliver, msnbc political analyst, host of crooked media's what a day podcast, and author of the upcoming book "a more perfect party." thank you all for being here. i am going to go to you first, you jelani. this is actually a pretty momentous thing we're seeing happen in the democratic party. and that they are coalescing the old guard of the republican party, at least the part of the old guard that has the courage to step forward. that's not all of them. some of them do not have said courage. the ones who are willing to step out there and make a claim for american democracy, plus progressives like aoc, who actually wedded themselves to joe biden's really progressive agenda as president for the most part. and kamala harris, who comes from the san francisco prosecutor's office to the attorney general's office to the united states senate to the vice presidency with the full and active and eager support of black women who propelled her into that position and who is sort of the multiracial coalition candidate in her own life. it is extraordinary.

with me tonight to discuss more is juanita tolliver, msnbc political analyst and author, and msnbc senior political analyst matthew dowd. matt, this is very important as juanita and i were discussing as she came on set, the fake electors plot, it started in the states the last time. it got out of the states and made its way all the way up to the united states congress, but what does this particular plot now, this plan that we see, what does this mean for election day and also the days after? >> well, think you're right to say in 2020 it was more happenstance and it sort of emerged a bit organically at times and didn't get organized until the very end. the difference this time is it's more funded and it's better organized and there's more people leading it in a state by state basis to do this, which is scary on one hand. so on one hand we have a more better funded, better organized nefarious actors in the course of this. the good news is, which we have to obviously protect dock and i people's right to vote, making sure their vote skounts and all of that, is we have a more robust system in

juanita tolliver is back with us as well. the lawsuit plainly states virginia's, quote, unlawful actions here have likely confused, deterred and removed u.s. citizens who are fully eligible to vote. so where does this go from here? >> well, it goes to a district court, which ought to apply the law and tell virginia to stand down. but it's just as you say. and the first point to note is this non-citizen idea. juanita just mentioned it in georgia. it's the sort of flavor of the year this year that republicans are using around the country in different ways to sort of get at trimming the rolls. what happened in virginia, glenn youngkin has ordered a process where if the dmv has some inconsistent data they identify people. and by the way, it's clear, there are basically no non-citizens voting. but that's the premise. they'll identify people with a discrepancy. and then they've got to prove that they're okay to vote. so they're either going to be -- we're talking about naturalized citizens. they'll be either cowed. or who wants to
