julie haener has the night off. fatal crash at berkeley has neighbors concerned that a measure taken to slow down traffic could actually be causing more harm than good. ktvu's jade hernandez is in berkeley where a woman was killed and a young child is still in critical condition tonight, jade -- >> reporter: frank neighbors are out here tonight making sure that this round about is cleaned up. others say that reflectors and signs like these don't keep the round abouts from causing other accidents like the deadly one this morning. pieces of the cadillac were peeled off away from the trees it smashed into. the young woman who was a passenger died here near the corner of california street in alston way when the driver failed to navigate the round about, hit the curb and lost control. the woman graduated from uc berkeley last saturday. john simon a neighbor reacted to the accident

. >> i'm julie haener. last friday, he left work and later felt sick. the next day he was dead. tonight, we've learned that bacteria he had been working with killed him. new at 10:00, ktvu's amber lee is live in san francisco. she tell uses the cdc is involved in the investigation and the man's friends and coworkers are now receiving treatments. >> reporter: the 25-year-old man lived on treasure island, and worked here at the va hospital at lands end. the question is, how did he become infected. the unidentified researchers worked in building 2 here for the last six months. he was part of a research team at the va hospital, looking to develop a vaccine for the bacteria that causes a deadly bloodstream infection, or meningitis. the researcher reportedly began experiencing symptoms, such as a headache, chills and fatigue. >> it was only about 18 hours. >> reporter: the chief of infectious disease at the va hospital told us the researcher dies from the same bacteria he had been studying. it caused him to develop a skin rash, similar to this photo, all over his body. friends brought

. >> i'm julie haener. a tense situation right now on the streets of san francisco, where police tell us a man in an apartment building has fired at at least 13 shots at officers. we get the latest on this breaking news from ktvu's heather holmes. she just arrived at the scene near post and hyde where evacuations are taking place. >> reporter: just up the road from where i'm standing in a three story apartment building is a man barricaded inside. he has indeed fired off at least 13 rounds at officers, this all happens on post street, in the 800 block of post. you can see that here all the way to levenworth is now blocked off. i'm told officers are trying to talk with this suspect. in fact, he is a man wanted in connection with that homicide that we reported last night on the 10:00 news. the woman found dead inside her home. the search for that suspect evidently led officials to that apartment building here on post street. i'm told that suspect armed with a handgun started firing again at officers. and that

. >> i'm julie haener. one would be robber was shot and killed. police in san ramon are looking for three other people involved in an attempted strong robbery at a jewelry store. new information from ktvu's heather holmes. she arrived not long after the shooting, and joins us live to tell us how the robbery was foiled. >> reporter: julie, if you take a look, you can see that vessel shots here in the shopping center, they remain blocked off tonight. they'll remain inside the gold n treasures jewelry store. san ramon police talk with witnesses about the violence that erupted around 4:30 this afternoon. >> there was one person shot. they've been taken to a local hospital. >> reporter: police say the person shot was one of four people who stormed the jewelry store looking to rob it. before they got away with any of the jewelry, or vintage coins, an employee pulled out a gun. at least one shot was fired. >> strong people. >> reporter: her parents who own the family run business are not the type to back down. she rushed to the store after getting a call

. >> i'm julie haener. last friday, he left work and later felt sick. the next day he was dead. tonight, we've learned that bacteria he had been working with killed him. new at 10:00, ktvu's amber lee is live in san francisco. she tell uses the cdc is involved in the investigation and the man's friends and coworkers are now receiving treatments. >> reporter: the 25-year-old man lived on treasure island, and worked here at the va hospital at lands end. the question is, how did he become infected. the unidentified researchers worked in building 2 here for the last six months. he was part of a research team at the va hospital, looking to develop a vaccine for the bacteria that causes a deadly bloodstream infection, or meningitis. the researcher reportedly began experiencing symptoms, such as a headache, chills and fatigue. >> it was only about 18 hours. >> reporter: the chief of infectious disease at the va hospital told us the researcher dies from the same bacteria he had been studying. it caused him to develop a skin rash, similar to this photo, all over his body. friends brought

good evening i'm julie haener. >> and i'm frank somerville. 19 people are in custody after did a specialgents swooped in armed with search warrants. the raid dubbed operation disco days tack place at the gates community in discovery bay. among the items seized marijuana plants, guns even a grenade launcher. eric rasmussen has been following the story and is the only tv news crew there where agents just finished up their workers that's right frank. 30 minutes ago agents pulled down down the crime scene tape. this investigation spend a very wide area. they busted 14 indoor marijuana growing operations today. they won't name the exact locations yet but we do know agents had gone in and out of several houses on this street alone. the last few minutes people came out of those houses and inserted no drugs were found here. one of the alleged ring leaders lives here in discovery bay. late this afternoon we watched authorities carrying several a tells out of a house in this gated community known as the lakes in discovery bay. after seeing members of the drug enforcement agency and other officers
