news 4's justin finch is live with more of how neighbors woke up to gunshots. justin. >> reporter: adam, good morning. neighbors also very quickly calling police alerting montgomery county police to this block and the scene of a double homicide. let's take you to the video of that scene. this is how police found it last night. major crime division also called in on this date. their focus, that blue honda civic sedan. inside, two people were found dead. apparently shot. and on this block the yellow crime tape, the shattered glass on the street and heavy police presence to many may have looked out of place. let's show you where we are now as well. we are on the 8200 block of gallery court. this is not a through street. it does turn into here. it is just off dry ridge road which breaks off of east village avenue. now perhaps you can see back out live here about the spot where that car was found here on the street with two people. montgomery county police are set to put out updates later this morning and we'll bring that to you. two people dead found inside the car.

justin finch is live on the scene this morning with more on the investigation. stin, what can you tell us? >> reporter: aaron, good morning. right by the mobile gas station you mentioned, behind us an active scene. several agencies trying to gain clues and sense of what happened. we have csx workers, federal railroad workers, amtrak crews on scene just where the van is about to back into, that's the base camp at this hour. as for what we know now, taking you so last night came reports of amtrak train 175 striking and killing two people on the tracks here. we have 121 on board that train. crew as well. no one on board was hurt. there was a rail worker injured, reporting a need for check out, was taken to a hospital for that purpose. back on scene, the amtrak train remains on scene. crews are on the ground trying to get a sense of who the two people were. i can tell you speaking off camera to workers here, there's a sense that those were not just trespassers, as reported earlier, there could be more to the story. we will have that coming up soon. back to you. >> ju

the police are on the scene of a death investigation near springfield plaza. >> justin finch just gotto the scene and joining us live now. justin, what can you tell us? >> reporter: aaron, good morning. awaiting a briefing in about five minutes or so. lots of moving part here. first, pet value store behind us here, that is where their focus. it appears to be the scene of an attempted burglary happening about 2:30 or so this morning. as you can see, shattered glass outside that store. a car rammed into that window. a pet cushion appears to have fallen outside. one man was taken into custody after this event and taken to a hospital. we're told another situation is unfolding. that is the scene of a death investigation, a man found back there with upper body trauma. he was taken to the hospital where he has since died of his injuries. we have heard various reports as to what may have caused those injuries. but that's not yet been confirmed by police. if it was a stabbing or not. we'll find that out in a few minutes. the big question here, though, are these two cases related? this burglary

news 4's justin finch gets things started this morning with a look at security preparations under way on the national mall. this is just in time for this week's big concert and fireworks display. justin, good morning. >> reporter: eun, the tents are already in place for the festivities. this will become a checkpoint later this weekend. the national park service is saying there is no credible threat to these events, however, they're keeping an eye on any disruptions. a look at the items you cannot bring to the ground this weekend. we're talking about alcoholic beverages, bicycles, fireworks, large bags and boxes, large umbrellas, pets, posters and weapons. once you are here, though, you will be seeing police officers but won't see them all. behind the scenes, a lot is happening. law enforcement keeping an eye on the worldwide threat, including in london. the use of vehicles as weapons. >> recently, not only in the united states but around the world, vehicle attacks are an increasing potential and risk for large events with a lot of people. we are aware of we have a robust plan in place

news4's justin finch is live for us in alexandria. good morning, justin. >> reporter: meagan, good morning. she says she's shocked to hear all of this happened and even more so that her husband, the suspected shooter in the case. he left months ago and stole all of the money from his business and thought when the money ran out, that he would come back. >> i just don't know what to tell you people. i had no idea this was going to happen. >> reporter: sue hodgkinson trembling on thursday recalling what made her husband leave his illinois home for the d.c. area months ago. >> he wanted to go up there and work with people to change the tax brackets. >> reporter: in alexandria, the simpson park has been cordoned off. they are looking for clues for what happened before the gunfire on wednesday morning. alleged trigger man is 66-year-old hodgkinson. five were wounded. hodgkinson later died of his wounds in a gunfire exchange with police. the fbi now has his white conversion van which was parked next door to the ymca lot. investigators believe

justin finch joins us live from southeast washington to tell us how police are working to track down the suspect in this case. >> reporter: good morning, this is an older close knit community with an elementary right behind us. investigators are hoping that works in their a favor as they reach out and speak with neighbors this morning. detectives are knocking on doors, looking to neighbors for tips that could lead them to whoever left a noose at this construction site on thursday. a simple rope and knot tied to centuries of violence against african-americans found just across students ask parents were filing into elementary. >> it makes me nervous for the children for the older people that live in the neighborhood. everybody. >> it doesn't make any sense. >> over the weekend, action mayor bouzer announcing the district office of human rights is launching a hate crimes protocol into this case. on sunday two churches and christian praise led a crowd of many ages to stand against hate. in a climate where several nooses are turning up in our area, a call for it to. stop it here and now.

. >>> justin finch is live at the manassas station now with more on what neighbors say need to be done with teens walking on the tracks. justin? >> reporter: aaron, good morning. in the past hour we've learned that vre service on the manassas line will resume as normal out here. the trains will be on the tracks soon despite yesterday following that fatal crash. we're learning more about the teen victim in this case and that dangerous spot where she lost her life. now, first chopper 4 was over that scene yesterday afternoon. at first responders worked to save that young girl's life with her family, a friend who was a 13-year-old boy and the young man watching nearby. it turns out that teen boy and teen girl, police say were on the tracks as that train approached. the boy in this case, though, managed to jump from that rail overpass. the girl was not able to make it in this case. those familiar with the area say it's a very narrow, hilly spot. made more dangeus it turns out, it's also a popular area for younger people. >> yeah. there's a lot of people. it's summertime. they like to go wa

erika gonzalez has more on the impact but we start with justin finch at the scene of the accident. >> reporter: good morning, we're on new york avenue northeast not too far from where amtrak 175 came to a rest after striking those two workers last night. take a look behind us here. investigators are still here on the scene, still collecting clues as they look into what caused this tragic accident. stopped on the tracks, amtrak 175 within minutes of a stop at union station but never making it after striking two csx railroad workers close to 11:20 tuesday night. for hours, the train was parked on those tracks ninth street bridge and parallel to the 1200 block of new york avenue northeast. 121 passengers and crew on board were not hurt and were put on to another union station-bound train. the national transportation safety board joined amtrak, csx, and police. surveying the train, witnesses and surrounding area working to find out about the events leading to this deadlessly dent. still at this hour, investigators remaining on scene. they got hours worth of physical evidence out here earl

on the mall, i'm justin finch, news4. >>> d.c. residents who l short-term rental sites could soon have to meet new requirements. news4 consumer reporter susan hogan has details on the steps the district is taking to keep guests safe. >> reporter: d.c. lawmakers are set to vote on the so-called airbnb bill soon. it would require health and safety inspections of all short-term rental units. if approved, the bill would establish some of the strictest regulations on airbnb units in the country. d.c. councilman mcduffy introduced the bill. airbnb renters should have proof that the units meet basic standards instead of just relying on reviews. >> what we want to really do is to make sure that a person who comes to stay at a short-term rental is doing so without any guessing work and that it's been basic inspections that have taken place. these sort of basic health and safety regulations are already in place for hotels and so we think it should also apply to short-term reviewing the bill, and that safety is their number one priority. in

news 4's justin finch. >> you saw where that tornado touched down in silver spring. >> reporter: chris surveying the area. we saw this thing here. look at this house behind us here. it's squashed by this huge large tree. we're talking from roof to the ground. almost a little forest on to itself. a sign saying that this home not surprisingly has been declared unsafe. want to take you to video of the cleanup here in this crews worked very late monday trying to assess the damage. also seeing this was a storm in the area. we now know per the national weather service, this was an ef-0 tornado passing 70 miles per hour winds at points. moving very quickly, we're told. this storm lasting just about a minute between 3:48 and 3:49 p.m. p of course, as we have seen, it damaged several homes here. cars included. reports of transports to the hospital for injuries out here as well. now, the affected area of this part of the silver spring includes dennis avenue from west of edge wood avenue to eastwood avenue. you may see damage beyond that. perhaps downed branches, road debris and more. we can tell
