bill karens has a closer look at the conditions the firefighters were facing.the southerly winds off the ocean. they knew they had their hands full when they saw the gusts up to 30 or 40 miles per hour. right towards sunset. that's why it took 300 to 400 firefighters. they dug a big trench and hoping that would be the fire line to stop it, but they jumped over that and caused additional damage and kristin mentioned they had to bring in the heavy equipment and had to tear down the boardwalk and cost millions of dollars. supposed to be hurricane-proof. they had a tear a lot of that down to stop this blaze. they are going to have to -- it took months to build it. a lot of people, sea side park is just to the south. sea side heights was not quite as bad, but that was hit worse by the fire. you can't win. in that funtown pier, that was practically destroy and what sandy didn't take, the fire took the rest. >> that was the most heart breaking image. you can see the sign and everything. it just collapsed under the weight. stick with us for a minute. i want to ask you

first bill karens has a look at the forecast. he thinks he is swift thinking.? >> if i had to rescue the cat or mika and joe, that's the good question. we have been quiet and haven't heard much. things next week look to get more interesting. place in the whole basin, you don't want us to go, the gulf of mexico. the water is warm and we got camille and rita and katrina. we have a system that is entering the southern gulf of mexico. it looks like it will stall out over the weekend. it could be until about next week. sitting over 80 to 85 degree water, it most likely will intensify and possibly a turn next week. this front stalls to the north along the gulf. it could pick it up and send it towards florida along the east coast or drift and miss up towards texas and louisiana and maybe even ahead towards mexico. it's too early to say where it's going, but a serious threat in the gulf of mexico into next week. it's a warm day in the middle of the country and we are wrapping up with showers and storms from iowa and it's nice for all of your travel needs. we loaf you w

it's something the attorney general has been pushing very hard and something the president feels very strongly about as well. >> karen, the president has been focusing a lot on the economy obviously. the unemployment rate for african-americans is 13%. that's above the national policy. how much inspiration do you think we'll hear about that tonight? >> i think we're going to hear a version of what we heard this week obviously with the anniversary of the stock market crash. we heard the president give a number of speeches this week and talk about efforts that his administration has taken to get the economy back on track. i think there should be no surprise. we'll likely hear about the potential showdown with republicans in congress when we talk about things like the debt ceiling and shutting down the government because again part of what the president has been talking about is the need for investments in infrastructure for example to create jobs. that's something the cbc has been very supportive of. i think we'll hear that in the context of the narrative from the president this week. >> rebecca, to that point, we heard

karen travers has been staying on top of developments this morning.actly did alexis get in? >> reporter: good morning, diana and john. law enforcement officials say that aaron alexis had a security clearance that enabled him to get on to the navy yard and that's because of his work as a navy subcontractor. a senior law enforcement official told abc news last night that it doesn't appear that alexis had to force his way in. what we do know is once he got inside of the building he made his way to an upper floor and began shooting down below in to an atrium which is an open food courtyard in the middle of the building. diana and john? >> karen, we have heard so many remarkable stories. you have talked to eyewitnesses. what have you heard? >> reporter: there's some incredible stories here yesterday, john. we were hearing from witnesses who say they were standing in a hallway and the gunman turned the corner. looked at them. fired at the wall above them. just barely missing them and proceeded to go on his way. there is one eyewitness who everybody was spea
