mike on our left or your left, kari on my right. >> kari and mike are here this morning. what's going on? >> well, we are still tracking a lot of this rain moving in. some spots and looking now at the golden gate bridge. you can see drivers making their way across wet roads and windshield wipers on. as you cross some of these bridges, you may also need a tight grip on the steering wheel as the winds at times gust to 30 to 40 miles per hour. look at the rainfall, we had so far in san francisco about 0.3. and that was just with the initial wave of rain moving in. we had some higher amounts and some of the north bay hills. about 2.5 inches of rain so far. now they are seeing some of the cloudy skies and a break in that rain, once again. but as we take a look at what's happening here as this rain moves into the south and the east bay, some moderate rain and at times we've been picking up on some heavier rain moving into interstate 880 moving off to the east and into the hills and also in the south bay as we take a look at san jose. the rain is just now arriving. so the condit

it ended up being pretty substantive, kari? >> especially in the north bay, sam, because that's where we had the highest amount and santa rosa close to an inch of rain. you're almost there. half of an inch in petaluma. the east bay and peninsula, south bay, the rainfall totals are anywhere from a tenth of an inch to half of an inch in dublin. highs in the up approximator 50s to lower 60s and a lot more sunshine than yesterday. let's see how it looks as we head out the door with mike. >> we're not completely done with all of the rain. look at that. that happened in the last few minutes. raindrops on the lens. these people are paying cash there because one lane is not open so they are adjusting their flow over there. no slow on the approach at the maze. slowing as we have one lane to pass 238. here's the south bay. no problems on the map. we have a crash northbound at the summit coming into our area and that might be partially blocking the slow lane. i'll track it. back to you. >> mike, thank you very much. >>> a uc berkeley stud

let's get right to meteorologist kari hall. picked up quite a bit in just the last couple of hours. >> especially for the north bay. that's where we expected the highest impact from this system. it's just now starting to move into the south bay. so, the impact is not as great. but that will slow things down. many people head out the door to go to work or school this morning. and we are picking up on this rain that looks pretty moderate and there may be some bouts of heavy downpours just briefly along with those gusty winds. we had some of the higher wind gusts over 40 miles per hour. right now, temperatures are in the low 50s for the north bay and low 60s for the peninsula and highs today will be right around 60 degrees with times of rain and even some sunshine breaking out for most of the

a lot of people trying to get out there, kari. you have a travel alert to tell us about. >> the snow chains and the tires and thanes will be a requirement as you head up there because it will being pretty much all week long. but the winter storm warning continues until 10:00 a.m. tomorrow. we are looking at over two feet of snow above 7,000 feet. and we'll see that, once again. now, let me help you pack. it is going to be two degrees on friday morning. so be prepared for some bitterly cold temperatures and we're taking a look at that snow as it continues to fall. more of the scattered showers across the bay area. we're prepared for a chilly rain all throughout the day. and it will get heavier as we go into late morning, early afternoon with the next round moving in right in time for the morning commute for the north bay and then moving into san francisco, as well as the south bay later on this afternoon. and we see that the radar be covered pretty much all day and into the morning tomorrow. more of those scattered showers continue

let's begin with meteorologist kari hall. kari? >> the wind the main issue going through the morning. we are already getting reports of power outages in some spots, especially as the winds increase to 40 miles per hour. and that may be sustained with some higher gusts. the rain is tapering off. still very slick and very wet out there. when you throw in winds an ground saturated and trees may be bending and snapping and will be a concern throughout the morning so soggy commute and scattered showers continuing. wind advisory will be in effect until 4:00 this afternoon. and the highest winds will be in the north and the east bay hills and then in the sierra, heading further east, we will have hazardous travel expecting another two to three feet of snow above 7,000 feet. i'll detail all of that and what to expect heading into christmas an the weekend. that's coming up. let's see what's happening as you cross some of those bridges now with mike. >> first talking about san jose and crossing this, underneath 680. a nice easy drive and you

here's our favorite meteorologist kari. >> thanks. and i guess i'm the favorite now that the weather has cleared out and we're enjoying a beautiful day even though it was chilly to start. we do have clear blue skies looking all across the south bay. there's still some scattered showers just across the northwestern parts of california. and that looks to dip to the south and may clip the north bay today with a few spotty showers there. elsewhere it does stay dry. and now we're in the upper 40s to lower 50s. let's zoom in on the east bay. dublin and pleasanton now at 50 degrees. it is slightly cooler than average behind that system that dropped in yesterday. now we're feeling the cold air behind that and still some breezy winds. speaking of the winds a look at the forecast throughout the day. it's coming in from the northwest and bringing in those wind speeds at about 15 to 20 miles an hour. little bit stronger, higher along the coast and also creating some high wave conditions. and it will stay rough at least for the next couple of days

we can tell from the camera right behind kari hall. you have slick roads there, kari. >> windshield wipers on this morning and umbrellas up. you need rain boots, too. along with your santa hat to keep you warm. as we look at the storm system as it approaches the bay area and already brought a few waves this morning and creating slick conditions. as we go through the rest of the morning. more of the showers coming through. and the north bay we had the rain falling. a little bit more widespread and hillsburg over towards santa rosa and also towards st. helena. as we go to parts of the dealt and east bay and san francisco. more rain falling there and in the tri-valley. a heavy downpour moving through livermore. that continues to move off to the east. redwood city getting in on some wet weather and all of this will be sweeping through for the rest of the day. and it will be cool, too. with those winds gusting, it will feel chilly all throughout the day and into tonight. but that's just the tip of the i iceburg. cold air rushish in behind t

"today in the bay" chuck coppola is here and we now know this family lived in the south bay. >> sheriff deputies recovered five bodies from the wreckage of that light plane that went down during a rain storm saturday about ten miles south of bakersfield. a relative says the five victims were members of the price family of gilroy. tho

i'm meteorologist kari hall. cold start to the day and we've been talking about how cold it is here compared to some spots farther to the east. it's 64 in little rock, a. saw. if you have family in town, they can see what it is like where they are from. we have not reached the high temperature in new york city. looking at some of the microclimates and where we are starting, it's below freezing in the tri-valley. in the east bay, very cold temperatures san francisco starts out at day at 47 degrees and highs this afternoon top out in the low to mid-50s with a breezy wind. it will be 54 in san francisco. also in the peninsula and south bay at 53 degrees. get a closer look at where we have the coldest air and in parts of the east bay we start out below freezing in lafayette, it's 27 degrees. the freeze warning continues for another hour and 15 minute theans temperatures are above freezing. in san francisco, this is how you plan out your day. a lot of sunshine and i have to bundle up and even during the evening, we do

that's coming up in the microclimate forecast. >> thanks, kari. as you mentioned that north bay seeing the brunt of this morning's storm. nbc bay area's stephanie chuang is in marin county and fortunately very dry. >> reporter: yes, very dry. earlier though of course it was not. that's why you have signs like this here at northbound 101, flooded. with more rain to come the warning remains the same, stay safe and go slow. the back of this car now a bit of a mangled metal mess after crashing into this other car at the curve before the waldo tunnel. the other driver noticed vaz kwez passing him when suddenly car spun out of control and hit him. >> it was really fast. i remember hitting the wall and all the glass is coming through my head and my hair. after that i just look around and i was stopped. >> reporter: the chp says it was admitted he was driving a little over the speed limit at around 65 miles per hour. both he and the other driver were able to walk away pain free. >> they are very lucky because these things can sometimes get out of control

it's a cold one out there, kari. >> yes, laura, the coldest morning we've had so far this week. freezing temperatures now in the north bay. we are cranking up the heater and trying to stay warm as we take a live look at all our microclimates. it's 33 degrees in the north bay. east bay, 43 degrees elsewhere in the 30s. we'll see the drop as we head through sunrise. with all the sunrise it warms it into the upper 50s with sunny skies and a lighter wind. i'll detail that and the next chance of rain for the weekend. let's see what's happening with an update on the commute with mike. >> big issue is the eastshore freeway. folks, if you're using the rest of the bay, you're doing just fine. we'll look over here. this is vertically heading toward the split. the roadway heads around the san rafael bridge. the connector is blocked. there's a crash involving a big rig, a pickup truck and debris. looking for a sweeper truck and a tow. in san pablo, folks look like they're getting back on at central. chp says they're not sure when they'll be able to reopen those lanes. the rest of your day i

let's get right to meteorologist kari hall and how much longer will the rain last? >> at least until early afternoon. we'll still see the waves of rain moving into the bay area and we've seen this off and on at times taking breaks. but you, as you take a look at the radar, you can still see some rain to the north and even some lightning off shore. so, with that all of this energy we will still be tracking more of wet weather and creating slick conditions as you head out. a look at the temperatures now and the low 40s in the east bay and upper 40s in the bay. cool all across the board and highs today reaching into the upper 50s with, once again, times of rain. but also times of sunshine, too. kind of like yesterday. i'll detail what else to expect as we head into the weekend. but let's see how the roads are moving with mike. >> take folks to the bay bridge. the tolla is full. that's not a surprise and it's friday, a lighter build. we're looking at the westbound span and eastbound out of san francisco, the flow is all right. on the live shot and now on our sensors and

thanks. >>> let's bring in kari hall. we're getting ready -- you describe it, because i know it's coming our way. >> big storm system. it's going to bring a lot of rain to the bay area. it starts with light rain tomorrow just for the north bay. now, we're still seeing those clouds hovering overhead. it's been hard to get some sunshine. just a peek out of the clouds for a few minutes, so that's what we're dealing with now. heading into tomorrow, it will still be a warm day. we're talking mid-60s here, and with the light wind, we're still going to have the cloudy skies and then the rain begins in the north bay and starts to move into stran later in the day. let's detail that now. we're seeing this large storm system, and it's been bringing a crazy amount of rain for parts of portland and up towards seattle. it's been raining there for quite a while. so this system will slowly start to make its way to the south. and we will see that moving into the bay area. so the futurecast gives us an idea of the timing of this. and it st

kari hall says the summit could get up to 2 feet of fresh powder.hat is just today. >> oh, my gosh. let's send it over to her. you have a beautiful winter wonderland behind you. >> i was checking the tweets from chp. they had to halt travel in the sierra because of the whiteout conditions. even the tire chains will not help you out there. here is a live look at pinecrest. the skiers out there standing in the snow. we are going to see this continuing as we go into the rest of the day. hazardous travel and you can tell by the bright shades of blue where the snow is coming down heaviest in the sierra. the forecast shows snow happening throughout the rest of the day and tomorrow as well. it clears out on saturday and we have a base snow of 80 inches. i'm sure at squaw valley, there is an additional foot of snow as squaw. this is coming down on top of the several inches they have gotten already. you don't have to go that far to see some snow. maybe just head to the north bay and bartlett mountain. elevation over 4,000 feet. the potential for 5 or 6 inche
