kari hall's been tweeting updates about the storm all week long. you can follow all of us, we're all on twitter at nbc bay area. >>> meantime a menlo park rescue team is heading home today after helping with hurricane harvey damage. did i some digging speaking with the fire chief at menlo park fire department and says the crew just returning from assisting victims of hurricane harvey in texas had a few days off before returning home. he says that if fema calls, the teem e team will be ready to head to florida to offer help wherever it's needed. here at home the department is using its force fax. this requires all emergency crew members not helping in that disaster area to come in and work. the chief says that their home base is always the first priority, so they only send a certain amount of the department's 93-member team to assist with disasters outside of our area. >>> we have new details to share with you this morning on response times during the heat wave this past weekend. fire department says it responded to nearly double the amount of emerg

. >> we want to bring in kari to look at the storm's path. kari? >> we have seen this hurricane as a category 5 make land fall and head closer to st. martin. over the next couple days, moving over toward san juan, puerto rico, as a catastrophic hurricane with, as you mentioned, the strongest wind speeds ever recorded in a hurricane. over the next couple days, this will continue westward, affecting more islands over very warm waters. sea surface temperatures at 88 degrees. there's going to be a lot of fuel here for this to remain a major hurricane, even as it moves closer to florida by this weekend and early next week. so, very strong wind speed. a lot of flooding and rain expected. this is going to be another really heavy rainmaker and some very strong winds could cause a lot of damage over the next several days. >> florida is bracing. we want to take you to where a state of emergency is being taken ahead of hurricane irma's possible land fall. people are scrambling to buy things ahead of the storm. people are starting to evacuate. gabe gutierrez i

meteorologist kari hall continues our coverage this morning with a closer look at the hurricane's path right now. >> it is a huge hurricane and still very destructive as a category 4 and now wind speeds of 150 miles an hour. just had a measured wind gust at the harbor there of 109 miles an hour. so, this is going to cause a lot of damage. over the next couple days, it continues on the west-northwest track, just north of the dominican republic, moving over the turks and caicos and could cause more damage as they tur continue to rebuild after hurricane irma. as of now, it is not expected to hit the mainland of the u.s. this will be something that needs to be closely watched as we go into the weekend and early next week. >>> meteorologist kari hall has been tweeting updates on hurricane maria throughout the week. our twitter feed is a great resource for breaking news. @nbcbayarea. >>> we are keeping track of the devastation in mexico after a massive 7.1 earthquake slammed that region. this morning, the search for survivors continues. the epicenter was 80 miles from mexico city. you see it

let's bring in meteorologist kari hall. she has been tracking irma for days now. kari? >> yes, hurricane irma is one of the strongest hurricanes we've ever had in the atlantic. and we've had only five other reported hurricanes with wind speeds of 185 miles an hour or stronger, and this is just about to make landfall within the next 24 hours near antigua and st. martin and also working its way toward puerto rico, so we will di definitely have a very bad situation there with the hurricane so strong. moving over the islands the next couple of days. we're expecting major flooding and with wind speeds of 185 miles an hour, there is going to be a lot of damage. and then farther on down the line, we have the dominican republic and haiti. also cuba in the line of this. and this could also move into the bahamas as well eventually by this weekend, making it closer to florida. there is a look at the computer models and where they plot this category 4 hurricane for the weekend t looks like it will be very close to miami. we'll continue to monitor this and more updates through the n

weigh wa we want to bring in meteorologist kari hall. you told us yesterday this was going to happen. how many lightning strikes? >> this just came in. they found from cloud-to-ground lightning, 1200 strikes over the bay area and within the cloud, that's cloud-to-cloud lightning, over 7,000 strikes. that really lit up the sky yesterday evening. we are looking at quieter conditions this morning. this is the tweet i sent out yesterday. my son was in the pool and we heard that thunder. time to get out. that is definitely what you have to do. the saying is, when thunder roars, head indoors. even when you are in the pool, you have to get out or by a lake or by the water. you wait 30 minutes after the last thunder is heard before you head out there to play or even just watching the kids outside to make sure they are heading in because lightning, especially the cloud-to-ground is dangerous. we'll have another chance tomorrow morning. we'll talk about the time line coming up. >> thanks, kari. we are going have more throughout the morning. you ca

let's check with meteorologist kari hall tracking the storm. how much longer do folks have to get out, kari? >> they don't have a lot of time. we expect the outer rain bands to make it into florida in the next couple of hours. we see how close it is now, moving closer to the the florida keys. the center of the storm still a while away, with wind speeds of 150 miles an hour. if this becomes even a little bit stronger, it will go back to a category 5, but right now holding steady as a category 4. as we look at this storm over the next couple of days, if it moves closer to cuba that, may affect the intensity of this storm, but it still has some very warm water to draw its energy from. we're looking at sea surface temperatures in that region up to 87 degrees which gives more energy to the whole hurricane overall. now, over the next several days, it will be expecting to make landfall in southern florida and continuing on as a category 2 or a 3 before it weakens over parts of the south. so looking at the main timeline here, wind speeds are picking up
