as kari mentioned, an excessive heat warning in effect until sunday night.day will be in the mid-80s and over the weekend, the high 90s. in livermore, a place like that will be in the 100s. we did speak to pg&e asking how they were preparing for this weekend's hot weather. as you know, the electrical equipment can fail if the temperatures are too high. they said they are focusing on the east bay, and they are finding places with the greatest risks for power outages and placing crews in those areas. >> we don't anticipate widespread outages but we know there's a possibility of an occasional outage with respect to maybe a transformer failing as a result of the severe heat. we're ready to respond. >> reporter: you might recall last summer, the south bay experienced outages because of the extreme heat. one, it's not going to be as hot as last summer, and they have upgraded their equipment. and one person tells us their house is like a sauna, and that's why they and others are heading to local hardware stores to stock up on fans and the portable a/c units. report

the entire committee owns it kari, i will start with you. you actually trimmed some apple a few weeks ago. >> trimmed a little apple about six weeks ago and we thought that it was getting a little pricey of course it's gotten pricier. anyone who has cut back the last year has made a mistake. so what do we think here the market considers apple both a defensive stock and an aggressive stock you want to play growth, play apple. value, a bank and defensive, you play apple it's really hard in this type of market to bet against it on the other hand nobody is overweight apple so we own it but we're underweight. you're going to have 15% of your portfolio and a couple of names. it's hard to be overweight, and it's got the problem that every global company has, consumer spending in china, consumer spending everywhere. phones are expensive there's discretionary. on the other hand people choose the discretionary money that they prefer to buy an iphone than almost anything else. it's hard to bet against it. where the growth is not exceeding that level by

. >> i'm marcus washington, and kari hall has been timing this heat hour by hour.re starting to see these numbers climb. >> especially in the inland valleys and it will be a wide range in temperatures for the weekend so it really just depends on where you are and how intense that heat will be. looking at today's highes, uppe livermore and low 90s for santa rosa and then notice san francisco will be in the upper 60s and low 70s as you head down the peninsula. we'll crank it up even more with hotter temperatures tomorrow in the inland areas and that's when we start to see the triple digits moving into fairfield and upper 90s for concord and morgan hill and mid-90s for santa rosa, and then looking at saturday. that's the peak of the heat and it can be as hot as 108 degrees in fairfield. that's going to be some dangerous heat and we'll see those temperatures over 100 degrees in those hottest spots from the south county to the inland east bay all of the way up to the far north bay and it's going to last for several hours. the good thing is that we will have places to go

meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that for us. kari, how are we starting out? >> it's starting out nice and cool. the good thing is we do have cool mornings ahead. it's just going to be hot during the afternoons, especially for the inland valleys. here is a look at our highs, reaching 97 in san martin and in concord 96 degrees. napa will see a high of 86 degrees today, and san francisco will be in the upper 60s. here is a look at the peak of the heat tomorrow. we'll receive widespread triple digits from the south county to the inland east bay. in the north bay it's going to be dangerously hot, reaching 95 in novato and a mild 75 in san francisco. you can see the range in temperatures from 60s all the way up to 103 degrees. and then as we deal with this excessive heat warning, it's for those areas away from the coastline, as well as away from the inner bay where we are going to see valley temperatures in that excessive heat warning from saturday through sunday. you do want to make sure in these areas you are reducing outdoor activities and looking for signs of h

we want to kick off with meteorologist kari hall. good morning. >> you saw the excessive heat warning be upgraded in part of solano, sacramento valley, through central valley, but this begins on friday during the 11:00 hour and continues through sunday night for the bay area, for these areas in red. that is a heat watch. most likely will also be upgraded to an excessive heat warning. we are going to see hot temperatures starting to ramp up today. we're making plans around the heat, maybe not going outside during those hottest hours of the day in spots like brentwood, where we hit the mid-90s, but we're going to see a wide range in temperatures from the peninsula to san francisco that will reach into the upper 60s. we'll see these temperatures going up. i'll have the latest on this weekend's heat in a few minutes. >>> let's held over to nbc bay area's emma goss live if san jose. emma, the question is about those power outages. how likely are they this time around? >> reporter: a pg&e spokesperson tells me the heat may cause some equip

meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring.s a cooldown and that's keeping us nice and cool. >> we see the fog hasn't cleared from san francisco. it may take a while if at all today and we've cleaned out near the inland areas and the breeze coming off of those low clouds will keep us all cool, and anywhere from 56 in san francisco to 74 in vacaville, and mostly 60s for many areas around the bay area. taking a look at our highs for this afternoon and the trivalley reaches into the mid-70s and all of these numbers cooler than what we usually see for july and a cooldown from what we had over the weekend and the peninsula, breezy and 70 degrees and 75 in the south bay and in the east bay, it's a comfortable 65 for a high temperature while the north bay will reach the mid-70s. this weather sticks around for a little bit longer and we'll take a look at that as well as when those temperatures head up and that's coming up in the full microclimate forecast. right now medical experts are debateding the approval of the first of its kind d

meteorologist kari hall is here. the rest of the day, if it looks or feels as good as it looks, it will be nice. >> just looking at this camera, it does look really nice. the camera is shaking because of the wind. in san francisco, you are not seeing much sun at all. temperatures range right now from 60 degrees in san francisco to 89 degrees in vacaville. so the inland valleys are still warming up, but we're only at 78 degrees in san jose so temperature there are cooler. if you are going out to the alameda county fair, it it was so hot over the weekend but today much better with a high of 90 degrees in pleasanton. that's only about 2:00, 3:00 in the afternoon. if you're going outside of those times, it will probably feel a lot better. the wind picks up. by 6:00, we're at 83 degrees and temperatures will continue to drop. here's a look at all of our microclimates and those high temperatures for today with spots like morgan hill reaching 91 degrees, about the same in los gatos, in dublin, 86 for a high today, and 79 in

meteorologist kari hall joining us with the reason behind it. i know you were in tahoe a few weeks ago. did you notice a difference? >> i mean, you can't tell a difference in measuring by looking, but it is pretty clear and the water levels are high. we are finding out the reason behind that. there's a new study by uc, dave, in the last five months of the last year. it was clear down to about 81 feet. that's the greatest visibility since 1988. scientists say the research indicates that the plankton which were thought to have disappeard are now abundant. that's those algae eaters, so their presence is helping to contribute to the clear water. scientists tell the "mercury news" a species of shrimp dying off that fed off the plankton is leading to its greater population. however, the study indicates that the lake's average clarity decreased about ten feet between 2021 and last year, and scientists tell the paper that the lake's clarity is expected to grow over the next year, so that's some great news. it may return to something that a lot of us hav

meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that. the big part is this weekend, not today. >> tomorrow is the peak of the heat. it's starting to ramp up today. let me show you what will keep parts of the bay area protected from that heat. we look outside at the golden gate bridge, still socked in some fog. we are seeing it clearing out gradually, starting to lift. eventually this will clear out, but it's going to keep those temperatures down a lot lower there compared to what we'll see for the inland valleys. we're looking at a wide range in temperatures with our coastal areas in the 60s. you head to the north bay, novato reaching 90 today. we're going to see some mid-90s in the tri-valley as well as the south county and then fairfield well away from that coastal fog and cooler air, it will hit 103 degrees today. as we mentioned, tomorrow is the peak of the heat. more widespread triple-digit temperatures on the map here with martinez reaching 100 degrees. we'll see a high of 105 in san martin, while san jose will reach a high of 92 d

meteorologist kari hall has a look at the forecast for us today. if it's anything like yesterday, i approve. >> we'll just hit pause on the forecast and set it on repeat for the next few days. in oakland, as you're heading back out for work, we can see definitely more people are back to work this morning. it's cloudy and temperatures in the upper 50s. we're going to see some peeks of sunshine throughout the morning as it slowly warms up and heads for the upper 60s today. a lot of these numbers are cooler than we typically see for this time in july, with san jose reaching 79 degrees. so we'll talk more about the cool air ahead in just a few minutes. >>> mike has a look at where we can find lower gas prices. >> once again, san jose on the top ten list for the entire state. today we also have $3.99 at express gas on redmon avenue. in solano county the best price is $4.11, reported in vallejo at the shell on tennessee street. the bottom number, the top price we have, alameda county shows $4.15 at superior gas on washington avenue in san leandro. thank

meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect. a cool start to the morning. >> you can see drizzle on the camera lens in emeryville and we're starting out with a deeper marine layer that means more clouds and fog that may hold on longer throughout the morning. as you drive across the san mateo bridge, both hands on the steering wheel as the wind picks up and cooler temperatures continue to move in. temperatures for the most part say in the 50s through 8:00. 9:00 we start to see it warming up with peeks of sunshine. high temperatures today, it's going to be windy and only low 70s for the south bay and tri-valley. for the north bay, we're headed for 78 degrees. >>> mike, you've got a look at where we can find lower gas prices. >> today our star report goes to star gas and mart in livermore. they have $4.09. in fact, we're going to look at sunnyvale, the costco there, and the one in santa clara, they both report $4.27. solano county, we've got vallejo here at the bottom, $4.11 at the shell on tennessee street. thank you for reporting

kari is hard at work. what's in store?st relax for the next few days because we're going to be in our usual weather pattern, cool coastal temperatures and warm valley temperatures. we're also going to see things changing over the next few days. we're seeing right now a mainly clear sky as you head out in fremont, a cool morning with the temperature at 60 degrees. as we go throughout the next several hours, whatever clouds we're seeing now will be clearing out. as we go into the day, higher clouds will be filtering sunshine, keeping those temperatures down as well. we only head for the upper 70s in fremont. we'll see a high of 85 in martinez, and no vatty reaching 83 degrees with san francisco in the mid-60 os. we'll talk about the cooldown and warm-up in a few minutes. >>> mike, we should have better news for the commuters in oakland. >> we see the sensors starting to move better just past 7th, they've cleared from the chp report, a disabled truck that was in the middle lane. we should see that start to clear up over the n

kari has a look at our temperatures for today. still a mild one? >> yeah, nice and mild, starting out cool and slowly warming up. this is what we're used to seeing this time of year. as we start out in oakland, a live look outside, a few low clouds and that marine layer moving in, keeping temperatures cool. we're in the upper 50s to start and it will be very slow to warm up as we get peeks of sunshine over the next several hours. only headed for the upper 60s today, 79 in martinez, and we'll see some low 60s in san francisco as we are going to see a stronger ocean breeze that's making it to the inland areas as well and keeping those temperatures nice and low. san jose reaching 79. as we take you to tomorrow, it's only slightly warmer with santa rosa hitting 85 degrees and 77 in napa. on thursday we see a warming trend starting to ramp back up with fairfield hitting 97 degrees. we'll talk more about the warmer temperatures ahead coming up. >>> mike, you've been tracking a crash. what's the update? >> we're looking at the crash heading to the bridge

meteorologist kari hall joins us now.hind it and it's not because people aren't littering. >> right. there's a new study out according to uc davis and they're saying that during the last five months of the last year, the lake was down to about 81 feet and that's how far you can see. and that's the greatest visibility since 1988 and scientists say the search indicates that plankton, the algae eaters are now abundant and their presence is helping to contribute to the clear water. scientists tell the "mercury news" that a species of shrimp dying off that fed off the plankton is leading to greater population. the study indicates that the lake's average clarity increased ten feet between 2021 and last year. so the scientists tell the paper the lake's clarity is expected to grow over the next year and that may return to the 1970s level of clarity. so something a lot of us have never seen. >> yeah, i mean, it's so cool. and they throw the plate down there, right? >> yeah. so those algae eaters that we put in our fish tanks, it's

>> what did i say is more important. >>> kari has a look at our forecast. we're all winners. >> nice and cool for today and then it starts to warm up tomorrow in the inland valleys. take a look at these numbers, with san jose reaching 83 degrees. this is about normal for this time of year. 87 in east san jose and 90 in morgan hill. we move toward the east bay where we're ranging from 69 in oakland to 86 in martinez. danville hitting 88 degrees and 90 in antioch. then for the coastline, upper 50s this afternoon. san mateo reaches 75 degrees. we'll be in the mid-60s in the mission district in downtown san jose. in the north bay, temperatures reaching 97 in ukiah, novato headed for 82 degrees. a wide range in temperatures here, but there's been extreme heat as a large area of high pressure that has not budged for weeks is causing record high temperatures. phoenix today, 117 degrees. unbearable heat there. and every now and then that heat dome starts to nudge its way back toward california a little bit and causing our temperatures to go up. we're going to see t

let's check in with meteorologist kari hall. she's been tracking those temperatures for us. >> for most of us around the bay area we're still taking a break from the extreme heat and we're starting out with our nice, usual cool morning that gives us a chance before those temperatures heat up in the valley. so we're in the upper 50s right now in livermore, we're in the mid-50s in sonoma, and we take a look at mountain view where we're going to see temperatures in the upper 50s in the next couple of hours. and then a mild day for today, with a mostly sunny sky. around the bay area we'll see temperatures in oakland reaching 69, 89 degrees in gilroy. you can see the range in temperatures with brentwood today still hitting 100 degrees. we'll get a look at some hotter temperatures in our forecast in a few minutes. >>> mike has a look at where we can find lower gas prices. >> livermore are back in the top ten for the state but it's the same price, so everything else is changing. $4.09, diamond gas and mart on south front road. solano c

here is meteorologist kari hall with the impact it's having on the environment. >>> cooling demand incalled cooling degree days or cdd values estimate how much cooling is needed to maintain a comfortable indoor air temperature. values are the difference between a location's daily outdoor average temperature and 65 degrees. engineering standard considered the ideal indoor temperature. so this shows the sum of daily cdds accumulated over the course of a calendar year. in 1970 san jose had a little less than 600 cooling degree days compared to now where it has risen to about 750. and to think about this, more than half of the homes in san jose were built in the 19 70s and 1980s when temperatures were cooler. that explains why most of us don't have central air conditioning and the rise in cooling demand is a trend likely to continue as the planet warms. in the u.s. the projected changes in cdd are expected to drive a 71% increase in household cooling demand by the year 2050. according to the u.s. energy administration's latest outlook, commercial buildings are projected to see a 30% incre

we begin with meteorologist kari hall. and this just went into place, right? >> right.s is for the interior valleys across parts of the bay area. i want to show you a map so you know whether or not you're included. this will be in effect from now through 11:00 on sunday as our temperatures heat up anywhere from 90 degrees to 104. but we're also going to see lower humidity and increased fire danger, so during these hottest hours of the day, make sure you're drinking lots of water and taking care of yourself as well as pets. take a look at the range in temperatures here. we're still in the 50s in san francisco, but when you go to the north bay, it's in the upper 70s. and the farther you go inland, the hotter it is already at this hour. we're at 82 in martinez and 91 in vacaville. we're already seeing some low 80s in san martin. when you compare the temperatures now to yesterday at this time, it's up to 16 degrees warmer at this hour than yesterday, so the heat is ramping up. we're also getting some drifts of smoke coming in, so we are monitoring the air quality as ozone a
