we want to turn to meteorologist kari hall. you've been following this very closely. it doesn't look like it's good, kari. >>> not at all. i want to take you back to the beginning of our water year, october 2020. we were seeing some drought conditions, but southern california was not in a drought and we've seen that progressively get worse with the lack of rain we've had this year. now 97% of california is in a drought and 5% in an exceptional drought which is the worst category. the new update this morning now includes all of the bay area. all of the red shading showing it is approaching the worst category we could have here due to the very dry vegetation and all the storms missing us to the north and including san jose. it's definitely time to think about conserving water or reservoirs. and we are still in what we consider our rainy month. we haven't seen any rain in at least a month in a lot of these places. so it is looking pretty bad, dire conditions here as we see our vegetation droig out and we haven't even made it into the dry summer months. we'll continue to f

microclimate weather, we have here meteorologist kari hall with a look of what we can expect throughout the bay area. kari? >> yeah. we've been looking at very dry conditions and the update of the drought monitor this morning is why we're talking about conserving and putting in those actions as we take a look at the update this morning. 96% of the state is in a drought and 5% of the state in an exceptional drought, which is the highest level. as we look at the expansion of the drought in parts of the north bay, now parts of sonoma, napa county, as well as solano county included in that drought where we see the red is now also including contra costa coun it's been extremely dry. we are going to see these conditions possibly worsening. we are going to have some rain in the forecast. may not help us out with the drought but may allow the vegetation to get enough water to possibly delay the water season. so we'll talk more about that. it's coming up in a few minutes. marcus? >> cierra, thank you. two east bay cities grappling with east bay deadly encounters. fi charges have been filed in th

kari hall is monitoring this as well.o we know which fault this earthquake happened on. >> right, it was on the hayward fault and it was even though it was just a 2.6, we had a lot of people who felt it because it was in such a highly populated area, and so now as we take a look at what's going on, people in the east bay feeling that, and what's happened on the hayward fault, it's been a long time since we've had a significant quake, and we even watched a small one because it could possibly be a foreshock to a larger earthquake so the last major quake we had on the hayward fault was in 1868 and that was a 6.8. and so we are going to continue to monitor for that, as well as the rain that's moving away from the bay area. we'll take a look at our rainfall totals, some drought comparisons, and even talk about where we may soon have some new water restrictions, that's coming up in a few minutes. back to you. >> all right, we'll check back with you today. thank you, kari. >>> johnson & johnson's covid vaccine once again availab

as we get started with the day, meteorologist kari hall is looking at temperatures and kari, how is it's going to be warmer this afternoon. it's a little bit warmer already this morning, compared to the upper 30s we had in spots starting out and as we take a look at where we are right now, we're about ten degrees warmer in napa so we look at some mostly upper 40s but we're already seeing some low 50s right now in oakland. as we go through this forecast, a lot of changes ahead. let's first start in the south bay, as we reach up to 80 in san jose. morgan hill will be a little bit warmer, reaching 83 degrees. for the east bay, we'll see some mid 80s in some spots as we head toward antioch. vallejo reaching 79 degrees and 75 today in hayward. going toward the coastline we still have upper 50s in half moon bay and you head over to san mateo and it's going to be 75 degrees, much warmer there and san francisco also feels a slight warmup, too, with mid-60s and the mission district our north bay highs reach up to 81 degrees in napa, and we'll see a high of 83 in clearlake. so with the 80s today

the meteorologist kari hall is tracking all of this for us. kari, i know many of us wish we had some rain in our forecast but that doesn't look like that's the case for us. >> no, not at all. we're not going to see any rain in the forecast, and our drought just continues to get worse. yesterday we had the expansion of the extreme drought status for the bay area meaning that now we're shaded in red, and we're just one category below the exceptional drought which is extremely bad, so we are going to see still some very dry conditions. no rain in the forecast. at times we've had these high winds picking up, and if a fire does spark, we need something that we can monitor, especially in those remote areas to see what's going on, and this is a look at many so of the cameras that we have. there are over 700 cameras across the state. we have a map of all of those cameras that are around the state that help us monitor what's going on and we are going to continue to use this, unfortunately, as we head deeper into our wildfire season because we do need so

meteorologist kari hall has a look at that good forecast for us. okay, i'm hoping it's a good forecast. >> it is. it's all dry, that's what we're going to talk about, what's going on this week, at least we do have our fog that's blanketing san francisco right now. that's going to keep the temperature cool along the coastline as well as the clouds there with the highs only in the low 60s, but those clouds will not help us out inland. it's going to be warming up today, even a little bit warmer than yesterday. palo alto will reach 71. 78 degrees in san jose and you can see some upper 70s for the tri-valley, for the north bay we're up to 80 in napa and also see a high of 80 today in concord. as we go through this forecast, we've been talking about how dry it is, and there is no changes throughout the week, as high pressure sets up, it's going to give us at least a little bit of a cooldown, as a low passes to our north, but then as it moves right overhead for the weekend, temperatures come up a few more degrees and at times we are going to see some gust

meteorologist kari hall has been tracking that and how does it look for us today, kari? >> it's still pretty nice. we've enjoyed sunshine, a light breeze out there and our temperatures have been cool to start but warming up for the afternoon. we're taking a live look at mt. diablo from mal nut kreefnlgt i think it's going to be a perfect day for going out for a hike and probably better today compared to tomorrow because the winds will start to pick up. if you're going out to the park today in san jose expect it to be mid-60s in the next hour and then warming up into the mid-70s as we head towards 3:00 to 4:00. if you like the warmer temperatures, that's the time to go. for some of our inland areas we'll reach the upper 70s as we'll see in livermore and 80 degrees in concord and 80 in napa and san francisco will stay in the low 60s around palo alto will reach into the low 70s for a high today. so we're still getting the high pressure, keeping it try. it's keeping all of our rain chances away as well, and it's, of course, during the middle of our rainy season we look for a

kari hall is back with us for another check of the weather. eratures are going to warm up i guess a little bit this afternoon but then downhill from there, right, kari? >> yeah. it is a going to be a fairly cool day, but i think we'll take it because we've had some warm weather recently, and it seemed like it came way too early, so we're just going to dial it pack a bit with our temperatures, and as we take a live look outside in san francisco, you can see all the clouds have rolled in, and it will gradually clear up today. here's a look at our high temperatures for this afternoon. san jose will reach up to about 67 degrees and 46 in dublin and santa rosa will reach 66 degrees with a light wind. at times we've seen the breedses at 10 to 15 miles per hour. that breeze is blowing around a lot of tree pollen. that's what we're seeing from the alder, ash, juniper, pine as well as gross pollen. that's been fairly high. i don't think that this will change through the week. it may get a little bit worse as high pressure opinions all across the region.

. >> meteorologist kari hall has more analysis on this. good morning, kari. >> good morning. checking the usgs they were saying only six people report they felt it, it is in a remote area in the mendocino national forests and one of our lesser known faults, the bartlett springs fault. we watched these because a 4.0 doesn't happen that often but it is an active, seismic region and it could possibly trigger another earthquake on one of those parallel faults like the san andreas fault. as we look at how many we get, we get 100 earthquakes per day in california. most of them are below a 4.0, and in a year, we get 36,000 earthquakes a year. so it is a pretty active region, and looking at the type of earthquake we had, it was a right lateral strike slip fault, that's the kind of same fault that we have on the san an tray was. it runs parallel to that so we'll continue to monitor that and see if we have any more movement throughout the morning. we're putting things out, laura posted on twitter, you can let her know as well. we will be tracking this weekend's rain chances coming up i

now let's get a check how our weather forecast is doing for today with kari hall. od morning, kari. >>> good morning. i love those animations. vianey our nasa ambassador. really cool to get those stories from you. a live look outside with our live view in san jose. we are going to see a lot of clouds to start but clearing out today. and we've had all of this dry weather. i just got the update of the drought monitor and it's looking pretty bad for us. just a few minutes ago this came out saying that 96% of california is in a drought and you can see how expansive that is. we're not the only ones. it's all across the west. we've seen droughts across the north bay now starting to come down into parts of the east bay. the tri-valley, the delta now included in an extreme drought at this point and we've seen severe drought conditions for the rest of the bay area. one thing that will not help us out too much but is good to see, some rain in our forecast forecast. as we go into saturday, a few spotty showers popping up. sunday, more widespread rain moving through that will l

meteorologist kari hall has a look at the forecast, what you can expect today. kari? >> sunshine, nice cool temperatures. the weather over the weekend continues today. expect it to be nice and dry and slightly warmer compared to yesterday, if you are about to get out, head out for a run or bike ride in fremont, expect the morning start 45 degrees in the next hour but if you wait until a little bit later, it will be much more comfortable with upper 50s at 10:00 and upper 60s headed into early afternoon. we'll reach into the upper 70s today and a few spots hitting 80 degrees. we will have a slight cooldown in the forecast we'll talk about that and the dry weather that continues. >>> mike, how is it looking for the commute? >> we're seeing some pretty typical patterns, maybe different for the south bay, as we talked about san leandro schools coming back after spring break. east bay schools and the east bay hot spot, the bay bridge still showing good activity right now and a little bit of slowing already kicking in the incline and at the toll plaza, a brake tapping there

kari hall has been tracking that. good morning, kari. >>> good morning. and as we get ready to head out the door, we're in for another warm day. but, of course, it's cool now as you get that commute started heading out in the east bay. we'll be in the low 50s as we are going to see a few clouds here and there. but overall take a look at this warming trend. by 9:00 we're at 62 and then we're in the low 70s by 11:00. jumping about ten degrees every couple of hours because we're headed to the mid-80s today. for some of our warmest spots in the inland valleys and spots like antioch as well as santa rosa. we'll continue to watch this and the weekend cooldown. mike, how is it looking for early morning commuters? >> great. just like a typical early morning. it's early so, folks, that's the biggest thing they have to deal with. speed sensors on the east shore freeway. we are looking at the 242 this contra costa county. northbound construction. you can take 680. take the corner instead of cutting the corner. it should clear in the next half hour. so should this in

meteorologist kari hall been monitoring the conditions for us. kari, there are some fire cameras in that area just to watch and see what continues are >> yes, it's been alarming to see how fast the vegetation is drying out, now that we do have extreme drought conditions for the bay area and it includes all of us, all the way down to san jose for the south county, we are in a severe drought. with that, we need something to try to stay ahead of these fires and alert wildfire has a network of cameras, teaming up with pg&e and these maps, this map shows the 700 cameras that we have across california, and so basically the purpose of those cameras is to give us a view of what's happening on some of the mountain and remote areas, where a fire may spark, and then give us a heads up of what's going on there so we can move people out of the way and fight the fires before they spread rapidly. and of course it gives us a beautiful view of what's going on when there's not a fire going on, this is a live view of the sun rising over sausalito, looking at wolfbac

meteorologist kari hall has been tracking those temperatures that we can expect.unshine today maybe, right? >> yes, or maybe a sip of some wine. let's head to napa valley this weekend if you're packing to go there, pack some spring and summer clothes, we're going from 75 degrees on friday to 82 on saturday and 87 degrees on sunday. so yes, by the end of the weekend, it's going to be very warm, going hiking, going to maybe shasta trinity national forest, it's going to be a lot hotter there, reaching 90 degrees by the end of the weekend, and that sunshine continues with l.a. reaching into the upper 60s for tomorrow and saturday. >>> vianey, how is it looking for the commute? >> you know, so far we've done pretty well when it comes to no major accidents but there is some slowing along the morgan hill area along 101. it's just morning commute starting to build. let's look at -- excuse me -- your south bay drive times, northbound 101 from highway 85 about 20 minutes, northbound 280 from highway 101 to highway 85 about 7 minutes and northbound 85 from highway 101 about

. >>> so meteorologist kari hall of course has been keeping track of what's going on. you have a look at some of the cameras in that area? >> yes, so we've been looking at cameras all because the vegetation is so dry. let me show you what we've been measuring. they actually measure how much moisture is in the vegetation that's in the santa cruz mountains, and we are seeing it at record dry level and one of the things that burns very easily is called chemise, the shrub fuel that also fuels the fires and it is at a record dry level. so we have cameras that are all over california from alert wildfire. they have 700 cameras set up across the state, and they're mostly in some of those areas that are prone to see those fires start, and then we don't know about them until they go into more populated area so they give us a view of what's going on at every second of the day, all across the state, and it also gives us an early warning in case a fire does spark and we can let people know ahead of time before it really spreads. so it's a good camera network that unfortunately we m
