meteorologist kari hall is tracking that for us. how is the rain looking today, kari?we can see the puddles in san jose, but also not actively raining at this point. it's very close as the radar continues to get lit up with all of this green as the rain begins to move across much of the bay area. a lot of rain across the north bay as we get a close look at stormranger and where it is, just a little heavier with darker shades of green. we've seen more colors on the radar as snow comes down in parts of the north bay, and you do also have to go up about 2,000 feet before we see that change over to snow. and really heavy rain right now in half moon bay. so far we haven't seen any lightning strikes, but there is a possibility over the next few hours as the heavy rain moves toward redwood city. it's also going to be pushing across the bay area into the east bay in the next couple of hours. all a part of a new storm system coming in. cold temperatures and the snow continues for the sierra, as well as far northern california. a couple of lightning strikes up there, but we are

kari hall is tracking the rain? yes, with it being thursday we are going to skip ahead to making your weekend plans. there's going to be off and on showers for friday, and now saturday is looking nice but kind of chilly. only 61 degrees. on sunday we will see more rain coming in. if your weekend plans take you to santa cruz, we are also going to see showers off and on and temperatures staying in the mid to upper 50s, so kind of chilly there for your weekend beach plans. where you do want the colder weather, lake tahoe. that's where we are going to see sunshine and a high of about 50 degrees on friday. saturday reaching 46. look how cold it will be on sunday with the next storm system coming in. only a high of 31 and a low of 5 degrees as we see rain quickly transitioning over to snow. in l.a. this weekend we will see a mostly sunny sky, and warmer temperatures for friday. it cools down as the weekend goes along and we will reach in the upper 50s by the end of the weekend. we'll talk more about the rain coming in. >>

let's start with meteorologist kari hall, tracking today's forecast for us. >> we have numerous watches, warnings and advisories in effect and we did have strongest wind gusts on the peninsula, and it's still gusty out there. and so there's the continuing possibility of more power outages, as well as downed trees. today our temperatures only reach into the low 50s, also highs in the upper 40s in some spots. we're going to see off and on rain as well as snow coming down to about 1,500 feet over the next 24 to 48 hours. there may be a wintery mix as we see wet weather coming in and small hail will be possible as we see rounds of rain coming in by the end of the week. today it's still dry and windy. we're seeing temperatures only reaching 50 degrees for many microclimates and the blustery conditions will continue, so stay bundled up and ready for those high winds. we're going to talk about when the rain comes in in a few minutes. >>> this also had an impact on the roads. >> it absolutely did. and i do have some good news. we do have complete clearance on the bay bridge toll plaza after a t

meteorologist kari hall has been tracking what we can expect today. any kind of warm-up today, kari? >> it's going to be a little milder for the afternoon compared to yesterday. but yesterday afternoon was so cold, i think anything is better than that. especially once we see the wind calming down. but you can still see the breeze in fremont with the flag waving and we're going to see temperatures in the low 40s. may go down another couple of degrees. but then sunshine. we'll reach into the mid to upper 50s today. this is still pretty cool as our high temperatures are a little bit below even what's normal this time of year, as we take a look at morgan hill, 57 will be the high today. 55 in livermore. 59 today in napa. we'll talk about the weekend, which does look better, coming up in a few minutes. >>> mike, you're starting with congestion out of richmond. >> it's looking more crowded here. beautiful sunrise as well. we have a mix of emotions here. richmond does continue with slowing for westbound 80, as well as on westbound 580 across the bridge. the v

meteorologist kari hall joins us.warning is over right now. >> it is and things are clearing out. we're still seeing a lot of snow from over the weekend, the storm system has moved on out of here and we'll see some dry weather as we go through much of the week. but taking a look at our sierra snowpack, we'll get another update today, but we're still more than double our normal amount of the sierra snowpack. and we're seeing the highest amount for the southern sierra that is at 242% of normal, and even if we don't get any more snow, we'll wrap up the season with more of our usual amount of the sierra snowpack. as we go through the forecast we are going to see additional light snow. i had to take it out really far to get this amount. between now and the middle of the month, we could see up to 12 inches of snow in kingvale, 13 inches in kirkwood and south tahoe could see another 8 inches. we're at home we're enjoying sunshine but it's going to be a chilly day. your microclimate, most likely, will stay in the 50s and low

meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect. yesterday. >> it was nice yesterday and it will be nice again today, and even a little warmer for some spots. we still do have a cold start this morning as you get ready to head out. let's take a live look at san rafael. it is clear, the temperature is only in the upper 30s for many spots. in napa, 38 degrees right now. we'll hold steady for the next couple of hours. as we go into today the sun is peeking out from behind those clouds, but it still warms up nicely as we head for the upper 50s. reaching 59 in livermore, 62 in fremont and los gatos, as well as 62 in mountain view. we'll get a look ahead to what we're going to see as temperatures continue to warm up. >>> mike, you have a note for the commute into novato. >> westbound 37 coming into novato, as you pass by sears point, you've got to watch out for activity. there may be a hazard right near the interchange and that is an important time because look at highway 37 out of vallejo, we're showing the build, a little bit of build o

we start with meteorologist kari hall, who is tracking where this storm is now. t tamper off a little bit? >> we're starting to see some breaks here and there but still some waves of rain, and still the snow coming down in those upper elevations where those snow levels have come down to about 1,000 feet in elevation around the bay area. but we are once again continuing to see a lot of whites and blues here. that indicates where we transition from the green rain to that blue snow as you go up the foothills in east san jose. we've also seen it around our radar site in the santa cruz mountains in those higher elevations. we're still getting the waves of rain as well as you cross the richmond/san rafael bridge. tough to see in that area. it is clearing in san francisco, but this rain is heading across the bay, another wave moving into the east bay, so union city and hayward about to see that rain coming back. then for north bay, it is starting to taper off a little bit more there. there will be the case where we could see a little bit of sun popping out from behind th

"today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live from the scene. i know you've been out there since right after this broke. what is the latest, bob? >> reporter: you can see behind me, two investigators actually just went inside the home with redwood city fire department. they're trying to figure out what caused this fire. you can see the insulation from the attic that was pulled out. the elderly man who lived here is in the hospital being treated for life-threatening burns and possible smoke inhalation. he lived here with four other people at this house, which is actually an eldercare home. it's located on cypress street, a neighborhood not far from highway 84 and the el camino real. this fire

meteorologist, kari hall, is tracking temperatures across the bay area this morning. certainly a cold start, kari. >> it certainly is. it's freezing as you head further to the south to san martin and gilroy. in the upper 30s in parts of the east bay and tri-valley. oakland at 42. look at santa rosa, we have dipped to 27 degrees. it's cold there. we have not seen any rain or snow showers in that area. it's around where we have our storm ranger parked on bruno mountain. we are also picking up the snow that kris sanchez is seeing in the santa cruz summit and the santa cruz mountains. around the south city we are seeing rain. in milpitas, once the sun rises and you look up the hills, you will be able to see snow there as well. we will see this activity off and on throughout the day. >>> vianey, you have been watching the roads. any issues popping up? >> we do have some issues. i have an overlay of the wintry mix. i am not seeing accidents being reported along highway 17. no delays. the commute seems to be moving along just fine. but you want to drive at a reduced speed whe

meteorologist, kari hall, has a look at the forecast for us today. how is the air quality out there? it looks beautiful. >> yeah, it looks beautiful and makes the sunrise and sunset beautiful because of the particulate matter in the sky. we will have a little less healthy air quality today as we see the smoke and pollutants being pushed back to the ground. we can see the numbers are still in the range where you may want to limit your time outside today. it's also warming up. we are going to talk about big changes ahead for the weekend. that's coming up in a few minutes. >>> mike, you have been watching where we can find lower gas prices? >> yeah, right now they are squeezing down around the $4 mark in the lows, right? we do have a 3.99. this is one price below 4 bucks. it's at the valero in burlingame. and we have a higher low in the south bay, and it's great gas still in cupertino, 3.79 instead of 3.69. we are compressing around the 3.80, 3.90 mark. we have a crash where the arrow is, and we see a little more slowing, more cars and more distraction.

meteorologist kari hall has been tracking the latest winter storm.sticking around. >> yes, and it's going to stay with us for several more hours. we're not done seeing the impacts of this historic winter storm moving through the bay area. also producing a lot of heavy rain for areas from parts of marin county to napa county, southward. we've also seen some snow coming down in spots. it's still snowing in the santa cruz mountains and we've seen it off and on having huge impacts on the roads as well. really heavy rain moving through the south bay, all the way up to fremont. and it really doesn't matter which roads you take this morning. it's going to take some extra time to get there. but we are still seeing some of the wintery weather mixing in. we've seen it all, thunder, lightning, hail, graupel, snow, and it's once again still continuing for us, as the storm system continues to hit the region, and it's really starting to pick up for the central coast as well as southern california. you can see the low spinning off of the coast throughout the day. w

let's check in with meteorologist kari hall right now. she's tracking this -- i want to call it a very busy forecast. >> yeah, there's a lot going on. we're going to see a mixed bag of weather over the next several days. we're seeing gusty winds, 30 to 40-mile-per-hour winds, and it only reaches into the low 50s for highs today, upper 40s for the next couple of days. we'll see off and on rain through the next week and we'll also see some snow coming down our hills up to about 1,500 feet. below that there could be a mix of rain and snow, especially by tomorrow morning and then going into friday morning as well. small hail will be possible as we can see rumbles of thunder, especially on friday. so things will be changing quickly and we are under a winter storm watch. we'll continue to monitor for the potential snow in our hills and talk more about the timeline coming up. >>> vianey has a look at the morning commute. >> the cameras are shaky, we're still seeing gusty winds you're mentioning. this is a live look in oakland. both directions ve

meteorologist kari hall, of course, has been monitoring this.re will be wind here as well. >>> it's going to be windy across the bay area as we get colder temperatures coming in. let me tell you the snow forecast over the next several days. i know that we have a lot of people there still for presidents' day ski week. we are going to have snow over the next few days totaling several feet, up to possibly 40 inches for kingvale and about 2 feet for south tahoe, but then going beyond that, there could be in total about 98 inches of snow for kingvale, taking it to the middle of next week, up until march 1st. so we're going to see some big impact storms coming in. also colder temperatures for the bay area, high winds kicking up today. that's also going to create dangerous waves along the coastline. tomorrow we'll see the cold weather continuing and even a chance of snow on some of our bay area hills. the rest of the week is off and on rain, it's cold, as well as windy. and we're going to go back to winter for several days as our temperatures drop each

meteorologist kari hall, i know you've been monitoring what we're expecting to get. a storm is headed our way right now. >> we are starting to see light showers farther to the north as we track it with stormranger, our mobile doppler radar. that's the red scan you're seeing as it moves around the bay area, picking up on where we are already seeing this next storm having an impact. and for the north bay it's moving through lake and mendocino counties, and is going to be may being its way into the rest of the bay area with gusty winds and rain. there also will be the chance of thunderstorms today that could produce some hail and even some graupel, which is basically snow pellets. we'll see snow levels coming down to about 2,000 to 3,000 feet for today. let's talk about this wind. as we look at our wind forecast, this is the wind speeds in miles per hour. 31-mile-per-hour winds at 9:00 this morning as we go into the afternoon the winds pick up even more, 40 to possibly close to 50 miles per hour near the coastline. and even in some of the valleys we're looking at 25 to

meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring those temps across the bay area. how is oakland looking? >> it is starting out cold. you do have to bundle up. it's going to be in the 30s and 40s. but then later today it's going to shape up to be a nice one, so maybe you want to add on the layers so that you can be more comfortable later this afternoon as we head for 62 degrees. also 62 in san francisco and fremont, and 62 in morgan hill. in the tri-valley we see highs in the upper 50s and i think the sunshine will make it feel much nicer. as we go into the weekend, we'll see a warming trend continue, upper 60s in some spots tomorrow. we'll talk more about that coming up, as we are going to see our temperatures for the weekend feel nice and comfortable. napa headed for 68 degrees on sunday and we'll also see upper 60s in fairfield, as well as mountain view. we'll have more on what to expect and when we may see rain. >>> mike has a look at where we could see lower gas prices. >> i've got my eye on the commute, but let's take a look at what we have. through the north

let's get to meteorologist kari hall with a look at the forecast. are we going to need the coats? >> yes, it's very cold. temperatures in the mid to upper 30s and napa 39 degrees. the coldest temperatures are 35 in fairfield and in santa rosa. we're 40 as you step out the door in oakland. as we take a look at santa rosa right now, upper 30s there. we are seeing our temperatures starting out very chilly, but there will be a lot more sunshine today compared to yesterday, and a slight boost in temperatures as we reach into the mid-60s for today. even upper 60s for san martin this afternoon. we'll be tracking a warm-up in our fork and i'll let you know if there's any rain coming. >>> mike, you were looking for flashing lights. >> we see lights stacked up traveling south across the golden gate bridge. crews are not clearing, so no traffic break just yet. from the robin williams tunnel, you see an easy drive so far getting into the san francisco. you see little blips from time to time, so there does appear to be a crew past spencer, as it still registers on the grid. same thing in the t

kari hall is tracking what we can expect. >> another cold one. temperatures freezing in spots, and we also have a frost advisory that continues for the next four hours. so in those areas, you may want to allow some extra time to get the frost off of the windshield before you head out for your commute. we're right now at 32 degrees in livermore, 31 in dublin, and it's 30 in santa rosa. we typically see temperatures dip a few more degrees around sunrise. in martinez we may see temperatures holding steady. we're at 33 degrees now, but more clouds will be moving in. and we're also looking at another cool afternoon. >>> mike, you're tracking two traffic alerts. >> yes, i think one alert will clear, north 880 at 7. for hours they had closed all lanes. just moments ago they reopened all but one lane. they were diverting over to 980 and 580. that should be a smoother drive. the alert will remain in place until they completely clear this, but the slowing has mostly cleared. meanwhile, this closure continues for westbound highway 4. i marked it as a crash

meteorologist kari hall is here and just how long are we looking at with this rain?it will be mostly throughout the morning and then taper off. there's not going to be a lot of sunshine today. if you'll be stepping out the door within the next hour or so, you'll have to deal with some bouts of heavy rain that's really been hitting san francisco, parts of the peninsula and toward the east bay, as we are seeing a lot of yellows on stormranger, indicating heavier rain. for peninsula, we've seen waves coming through. san mateo is really getting heavy rain now. it's a lot lighter for san jose. then it picks up as you head down to morgan hill and gilroy, as the rain moves over the santa cruz mountains. a wide view shows we are going to see this system coming in, a then a brief break before another one comes in right behind that. we know you want to get to work. >>> you're already seeing a crash having a big impact. >> yeah, the alert is for oakland, west 24. that's a very important area approaching the bay bridge and it is jammed up toward telegraph avenue. two lanes block
