but we begin with meteorologist bill karins. what's the latest? >> we have a lot of problems going on out there. i'll go to my weather computer. this is nantucket. reports all power has been lost on the island of nantucket. this is the water front that leads to -- this is a road here. you can see the ocean has moved right in. we have large waves, storm surge, about four foot. we have a lot of flooding problems. other areas are seeing problems as well. you can see the house there in the background. water covering the entire property here. these areas typically when they get. a storm surge in these, the water rises. it's not that unheard of, but if you get water in the bottom half of the property, you're going to get a lot of damage done if you didn't move your furniture. as far as the snow goes some of the totals are going to be becoming very epic. you can see about two feet right here. it's still snowing in these areas. so again, we're starting to get pictures in. send them to my twitter feed. we'll put them on the air. the flooding and snow is be

for more on what we can expect in the next 24 hours, let's get to our meteorologist, bill karins. start with new york and work our way up to where the more serious trends you're following now in the weather. >> in new york people are starting to venture outside, realizing it is safe to do that now. low wind chills greet you in the teen range with light snow still falling, it looks more pretty than anything else. this is not the dangerous side of the storm. new york city was on the far western edge of the storm, did get 8 inches in central park 11 at laguardia. and out of long island 18 inches. wasn't a miss of the forecast by much 25 miles, 30 miles made the difference for new york city. philadelphia were worse than new york city, were expecting 8 to 10 only picked up two inches. those areas did better than expected. that forecast if you want to give it a grade, give that a d. but anywhere from central connecticut out through cape cod, up through all of massachusetts and coastal maine, this forecast is spot on. the timing has been on impacts have been on. the only impact is less t

nbc meteorologist bill karins is tracking the storm. bill. >> good morning to you, milissa. tracking the storm all night, the storm has blown up just as explosive and big and powerful as they expected but just about 25 to 50 miles further to the east. that's more out to sea. that has spared a few areas and the worst of the storm. mostly sections of new jersey philadelphia new york city who did get hit but not as bad as expected. all the way to the hudson valley, albany, new york area. the storm itself is peaking out intensity, benchmark, a spot off caped cod. if storms travel over that location usually we know they will be pretty bad and pretty bad. that's what happened in eastern new england. storm at its peak. power outages. big huge snowdrifts. this is when they are occurring out there. new york city area under a winter storm warning, seven, eight inches topping off around nine or ten. the snow bands everyone was waiting to see where it set up has set up this morning over long island back through providence, through the wooster area all of coastal main. right where the bl

we start with nbc meteorologist bill karins and the timing of this storm. bill. >> thanks milissa. this storm is going to live up to all the hype. it has all the yesterday yents that could cripple a region for 36 to 48 hours. they might not have power when all is said and done. coming out of the central appalachians. once it reaches warm waters off the east coast of virginia it's going to explode into a powerful storm especially this evening. this time tomorrow morning the roads will be impassable and everyone will have to stay in their houses. 70-mile-per-hour winds churning along coastal areas, huge waves. we'll get storm surge flooding two to four foot in cape cod and eastern massachusetts, winds up to 70 miles an hour could knock down trees and power lines, especially coated in heavy wet snow on the coast. again, blizzard warnings 29 billion people all the way down from the "jersey shore" up the northeast. how much snow are we forecasting. my forecast calls for numerous areas, big city easily blow by a foot of snow heartland, portland hartford. jackpot wooster to central hills,

from the latest on the forecast i'm joined by meteorologist bill karins from rock fell ar plaza. who's getting hit and who escaped? >> reporter: we have one last really heavy band right through downtown boston. we've got about 20 inches on the ground in boston and they are in band that could produce another 2 to 4 inches in a short period of time, whatiteout conditions. everyone is off the roads and watching off their windows with the exception of the snow plow drivers. that's one of the things to watch. that band as it shifts off the coast during the day. then we'll watch our friends in maine who have about a foot foot and a half on the ground they'll deal with the heavy snow in the coastal areas through the daylight hours and start to clear out sometime right around 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. tonight. then we're about done. this morning's high tide cycle was worse than expected. we had a lot of coastal flooding and tiny bit of damage that was done. overwash on to roads. next high tide cycle is around 3:00 this afternoon. it will be bad but not as bad. as far as new york city we only got

to get more on the winter storm still hitting parts of the northeast from nbc meteorologist bill karins. talk about kicking them when they're down. >> all the winter weather in country is isolated in new england. these are snowfall totals we get typically in dass kaeds or the sierras when the big winter storms come in. we had four different states report 2 1/2 feet of snow. three different spots that reported three feet of snow in massachusetts. these areas aren't in the mountains, plain old cities with very little elevation. here is how we're looking in the west. i was hoping for couple raindrops in the san francisco bay area yesterday, but it didn't happen. the moisture moved through and is all the way up into minnesota and into wyoming. stim a fact that we have yet to get any rain in one of the wettest month typically of the year in san francisco. that's bad news all the way around. the forecast for rainfall doesn't show l.a. not bad, sun and clouds 76 degrees and arizona is looking beautiful as normal. >> winter nor the east and more warmth and dry for the west. same old, same old.

now for a look at that weather elsewhere in the country, here is nbc's meteorologist bill karins. you believe snow in san diego? >> beautiful pictures. so many gorgeous images places people have their pools still open and snow on the sides of them. >> interesting way to kick off the new year too. >> it was. we ended up with more snow in areas just outside of downtown san diego than we did in chicago, cleveland, d.c. all areas that didn't see any snow at all this past december. so pretty rare thing to happen there in southern california. we got the rose parade this morning, and it is cold. it is 38 in l.a. right now. it is 36 in phoenix. and 33 in vegas. this is without any winds at all this is the actual temperature itself. so a very cold air mass still over in the entire west. not exactly warm in boise either. san francisco, a little bit of breeze windchill feels like 44. we're at 25 windchill in vegas. not a lot of wind out there right now in l.a. san diego and phoenix. any little breeze and you'll feel it. so bundle up this morning heading out. if you're sitting outside for the

meteorologist bill karins is here for that. >>> the jet stream was amazingly strong over the atlantic. it doesn't affect us in the lower 48. what we're dealing with is a camp quiet day. little rain for you this morning. louisiana, mississippi if you're in alabama, grab your umbrella. in georgia, the pacific northwest a little rain. my friends in boston a little freezing drizzle overnight. we're about halfway through what i call my winter. i consider the winter months december january and february. right now 48 mrs of the country has snow on the ground but not very deep. we haven't had a lot of big snow e storms. we have a bunch of cities typically have a lot of snow now a pretty good deficit. syracuse has a 20-inch deficit, hartford, pittsburgh, philadelphia, vcht a big snowstorm. if we're going to get one, it doesn't look like this next one. rainy sunday followed by en tear your snow on monday morning. >> brace ourselves for that. we do have stories making news today. officials in philadelphia are going to once again try to shut off a water main after it broke sending water 200 neat

nbc bill karins is here. good morning. >> you see the pictures. amarillo, texas, had 12 inches of snow. more than boston new york city. a heavy wet snow impact also new mexico hit, too. if you want great fresh powder skiing head taos. the higher impact cities i-95 corridor a glancing blow not a direct hit. many areas of pick up three to six inches of snow new york city hartford providence and boston. the next storm system we're watching now moving through the northwest, pretty mild system. not a lot of snow even at the highest elevation. just a soaking rain overnight through areas. we track this this morning, seattle to portland. we clear it out this afternoon. that's good. afternoon and evening home could be dry. here comes the next shot of rain. this will come in later tonight into friday morning. then on friday you'll have rain to deal with in the northwest. active weather patternasonable many areas in california with highs in the 60s. now, the weekend, we're still hoping we can get some rain in california. details coming up. >> all right, bill

here is bill karins with some good news.an, are we looking forward to hearing that. >> a lot of people are. as far as the midwest goes those people have been suffering for three weeks straight and they are suffering this morning. last i looked negative 29 in international falls, minnesota. this has been kind of the winter weather pattern as of late. every since rains ended in california jet stream ridge back up to the north, south. through the upcoming week pattern change kinks in the jet stream warmer pacific air starts to dominate weather map. a wetter weather pattern in the northwest. not so much california unfortunately but we're definitely going to see a couple bouts of rain in the pacific northwest, one later in the week and one towards the week. temperatures not bad, 40s and 50s. coldest spot 34 spokane, 30. a little storm system through the four corners bring snow to the higher elevation but doesn't look like it will cause too many problems in phoenix, tucson flagstaff, santa 65 there in red bluff and 48 in mount sha

. >>> nbc meteorologist bill karins is here with your weekend forecast. good morning to you, bill. >> what a week it has been with the cold blast, the bouts of snow. one batch of snow going through. going through where we are here in new york city. that's times square. you can see it even accumulates there on the sidewalks, plenty cold enough throughout the northeast. the snow is everywhere even in the midst of the urban jungle. let's look at the radar. you can see the snow coating the region. shouldn't be too bad at the airport. should be in and out of here in a hurry. we'll watch heavy lake-effect snow after that off lake erie and ontario, two to three feet in a few spots . the windchill still a story. we get the clipper system that goes by. behind it a huge high pressure system and winds just come right down out of the great cold north and we're negative 25 to the dakotas, negative 28 in duluth. as far south as kansas city negative wind chills one of those weeks in the midwest where you wonder how long it will take to get to spring. still kind of chill

nbc bill karins has more on that. good morning. >> good morning. >> i still don't think seahawks fans, they have probably seen the highlights 20 times. they probably still don't believe they came back to win. really amazing stuff. those pictures of the ice yesterday, it happened at my house. what made it so dangerous was that it was crystal clear, wasn't on the trees, power lines, wasn't on the vehicles. the ground was below freezing. it was just that thin crystal clear coating. a lot of people didn't know it until they stepped on it. in that region right above freezing in most spots. some sidewalks are icy from yesterday. it was an incredible scene. i've seen freezing rainstorms that weren't as treacherous. as far as the northwest goes we still have moisture streaming off the pacific, snow levels pretty high but a little bit above passes this morning. as far as the west goes it doesn't look like as many weather headlines this week. if anything we're probably as cool as we're going to get. it looks like on this very s

here's nbc meteorologist bill karins. >> northwest got rain overnight. it's clearing out in time for a pretty nice commute on your friday morning. we're wondering how much rain will make it into san francisco. didn't quite get down there. it's mostly northern california. a closer view of the radar shows san francisco here. there may be a chance this afternoon of a little bit towards the northern bay area. for the most part it will stay to your north as that frontal system weakens. around seattle and portland between .5 to 1 inch. coastal areas a little more than that. expected rainfall there's another system coming in. this one is going to be on saturday. it looks like a warm front first with rain in the morning and heavier rain in the afternoon. we're really targeting northern california. notice the yellows up through oregon that's 2 to 3 inches of rain possible. it misses mostly san francisco. we're not getting any of the benefit there. the storm itself is now in british columbia. it is snowing in higher elevations of the northern rockies. that's where
