now, to weather and meteorologist, bill karins. you warned us about a severe weather threat. >> we went from straight to talking about winter storms to severe weather. it is springtime in the plains. this was missouri yesterday. one tornado did format. it did touch down. it did destroy a couple of mobile homes. there were no injuries or fatalities. that was a sign to come. yesterday, missouri. that's where we had the tornadoes and the hail. as far as the storms torksd it looks like they are going to be more down in the deep south. let me show you what we're looking at as far as the area of concern. if you are going to deal with tornadoes or really bad weather, we are going to watch areas from east texas, louisiana, mississippi, alabama and the southern half of arkansas, wind damage, large hail and a few tornadoes. that does include houston and dallas. we are still getting drenched. this is not the severe weather threat. that's going to be later on, about 12 hours from now. we deserve a nice, sunny, warm weekend up the east coast. m

do we have meteorologist bill karins standing by, because, obviously, one of the concerns -- there he is, hey, bill, one of the concerns about all this, the weather conditions and how miserable, in addition to dangerous, it's going to be for the searchers. >> not to mention we have a river literally cutting through the search area and making a new channel because of this landslide. the rainfall has been, you know, pretty much off the charts this march. that didn't help things, along with the fact this river undercut this mountain, and in addition to that, deforestation. a lot of things went into this landslide and it's maybe not unpredictable as said. if you look back at the history records and warnings, a lot of angry people out there when they find out the facts. let's talk about today with the search with the rain. we had a storm system move in yesterday. you can still see the rain showers and now we're watching heavier rains shifting on to the washington coastline, so the best search conditions will be this morning. the actually river itself, this is actually the river that goes t

i want to bring in bill karins.et's talk a little bit about what rescuers may be facing in the days ahead. >> not a pretty forecast. this will set the stage, the month of march is one of the wettest they've seen in the pacific northwest for this time of year. seattle themselves had over seven inches. this area social security up higher. they probably got more than that, probably ended up with somewhere around nine to ten inches just this month alone. there's a river that undercuts the mountain. that contributed to the mudslide and this is actually a hill with numerous mudslides in the last 50, 60 years. there's probably some answers to be done with why these people were put in harm's way and why they were able to build as they did. these answers can come later. now as far as the forecast today, you see the green, this is rain. it's soaking right up i-5. it's not a heavy rain, but it's not helping and there's no signs of this relaxing during the day today. tomorrow will be a little better, but the general forecast fo

let's start our coverage with nbc meteorologist bill karins. >> west coast, they sent us here.e west coast sent this storm across the country. >> blame it on them. >> get, like, one rainstorm every year. >> this is shifted from what we expected. >> it did shift. friday it was centered up towards indianapolis, over the weekend it shifted south and really hit areas of tennessee, kentucky, arkansas, even dallas had a lot of sleet out of it. now this morning it's centered over virginia and washington, d.c. and it's amazing for martha it's 19 degrees during the week. it snows in march, but new york city has had a coating. four to eight in d.c. and richmond doesn't get many snowstorms in march. three to six inches, tonight you're going to be shoveling snow. talk about a crazy roller coaster. dallas, 2 degrees. wherever you had the sleet yesterday, it's still on the grounds, roads are still treacherous from that, and no end in sight, unfortunately. tonight we're down to 6 in philly, 9 in d.c. these are close to the all-time coldest temperatures we've ever seen in the month of march. u

. >>> let's get a check on the weather with meteorologist bill karins. >> good monday morning, thomast i tell you another snowstorm? this one is going to affect areas that expect snow in the middle of march. let me take you through it. the storm that will affect the country is in the northwest, it will come pine with the moisture from south texas, they'll merge and move across the country. what's different this time, finally it's not freezing coast to coast. now, there's mild air in place, that's why areas like chicago, cleveland, new york city, washington, d.c., primarily a rain event for you. this is one of our computer models but we're still three days out. specific snow today in the northern plains, up in the northern rockies. this looks like a new england special. a closer look at the new england area. this is potential for vermont and all of maine for over a foot of snow, that's a significant march snowstorm. further to the south, that's where we're going to get that messy mix. again, the timing of that isn't until wednesday night, thursday morning. your coast to coast forecast

meteorologist bill karins is here with that. it's been a busy week. >> good morning. seems like one thing after another with the mudslide, ryanny weather in the northwest. doesn't look like this isoing to change. heavier rains will shift to northern california. we have rain this morning around san francisco. some showers that continues to northern california. the big portion of the storm has moved on shore. showery weather. that's in the forecast all day today. there's another storm in the upper levels behind this that will kick in northwest with additional showers and storms. here's a closer look at radar. green shows you the rain. mountains will see a more showers than the lower elevations. you can see the radar enhancement west of san francisco. that will sweep through throughout your morning. again, much needed rainfall. what we're going to see over seven day, no rain relief for drought in southern california. the rescues. additional showers in the northwest. additional rains thursday night and friday. we'll talk more about the extended forecast coming up. >> look

i'm bill karins in for thomas roberts. it's tuesday, march 11. welcome to the show that would talk weather for a half hour straight if only we had a weatherman to do it. but we begin with the latest on the missing jet and uncertainty surrounding its 239 passengers and crew. the search for the plane and any survivors has entered its fourth day after several leads turned out to be false. 34 aircraft and 48 ships in a total of ten nations are involved in the search which has expanded to the south china sea and areas west of malaise kra. officials say they are skeptical of foul play, but they can't rule anything out including a bombing or hijacking. cnbc's senior correspondent joining us from malaysia. sri, what's the latest? >> reporter: the attention today and the story today does not concern the hunt for mp370, although it is ongoing. they haven't given up. it's important to stress that for the families involved here. but it concerns the issue of the stolen passports. what the malaysian police authorities told us today is that they have identified

." >>> bill karins is here with the start of the week west coast forecast. good morning, bill. >> good monday morning to you, paige. the pacific northwest, super soggy march continues. look at how much rain in seattle already. over five inches. it tapers off as you go down the coast. much needed rainfall amounts in oregon and a little bit in california. that's where we still really desperately need more rain. so as we go through jut the day today, as this storm continues to push in, storm system will continue to linger in northern california, there could be some showers around san francisco, but nothing for you in southern california. as far as the snow goes, there is not a lot of cold air with this one. highest of the snow elevations will get some snow. we don't get any snow out of the cascades or the sierra, the northern rockies, northern idaho, montana, and to wyoming that will get significant snow out of this storm. so the forecast as we go throughout the day, definitely another cloudy kind of breezy dreary day in the northwest and that will shift toward

. >>> bill karins here with the weekend weather. how it is shaping up. more of the same. in the east, cold and cold again, maybe snow. out west, hot and dry. >> yeah. the northwest is the exception to the rule because they're still wet. it is a broken record weather pattern out there. storm system moved on shore. the northwest still a lot of moisture behind it. so you're locked in the rain on i-5, all the way to seattle. eventually some of the rain will move into spokane. as far as the storm system goes itself, just dragging the front through. behind it, things will clear out between the afternoon hours. we'll see some sunshine and also instability showers. down there in arizona, shower activity for you too. as far as the weather pattern is set up that big blue h, high pressure building and strengthening over the upcoming weekend. very warm day yesterday around san francisco. 76 was your high, near record high. another very warm weekend in this southwest. temperatures this morning are in the 50s. almost all areas, actually, cooler, salt lake city. as we look at friday's f

meteorologist bill karins, fill us in. how did it change? >> from friday it was looking like i-70 from indianapolis to new york city was the bull's eye. over the weekend it shifted 100 miles to the south. that's made a huge difference in who's getting the snow. we saw sleet in the dallas area yesterday. i mean, dallas, texas in march is usually a warm place. this storm just heading further south. we saw wintery weather in nashville last night, and all of kentucky is covered in snow and ice this morning. much of the snow is right over the top of washington, d.c., baltimore to philadelphia to atlantic city. new york city, you're probably much done. you've seen about an inch and that's it. the heavier snowbelt is through the mid-atlantic region. how much snow? 6 to 12 inches is in the pink going from kentucky through west virginia through d.c. d.c., you have an inch or less on the ground. it will snow hard from now until mid afternoon. even richmond, virginia, your average high this time of year should be mid 50s. you're going to get three to s

. >> bill karins is here. we're talking about it, it ended up further south -- >> for a lot of areas. this storm kept going south across the country. dallas, texas, had a winter storm warning yesterday. san antonio expecting freezing rain and drizzle tonight. san antonio, texas, in march, like it never happens, so unusually cold across the country. the west coast, you dealt with the storm a couple of days ago on friday. it added up to our rain total. here is where you stand year to date. 4 to 5 inches around l.a. looks good. almost 4 inches in san francisco. we're headed in the right directi direction. didn't get a lot around the vegas area. but we took a dent out of the big historic drought. more rain and more moisture on the way. we have a significant amount of rain coming on shore now in northern california from the pacific northwest. snow elevations are still pretty high, so mostly just a rain event from portland up i-5. driving in the rain down to medford. in northern california, we have a good chunk of r
