i'm kate bolduan. thanks for joining us today this hour. today is the day a lot of folks were dreading, the day it became crystal clear how devastating the pandemic has been on the u.s. economy. with the april jobs report just released, it shows unemployment is hitting the highest level since the great depression. look at the numbers and recognize these aren't just numbers, these are people. 20.5 million people lost their jobs last month. the unemployment rate jumping from 4.4% to 14.7% in a month's time. the speed of the job loss is breath-taking. ten years of job gains gone in a month, and as bad as those numbers are, president trump senior economic to get worse still. >> the next one should be around 20. i was thinking this one might be as much as 20 but we had a big decline in the labor force as well. so the numbers are going to be probably going to be best to look at as you said the u6 so that's the 22%, probably 25% in the next report. >> wow. >>> the country hits another grim milestone this morning. the coronavirus has now killed mor

include in some cases testing, we just heard from somebody at university of michigan talking to kate bolduan, but in other cases it seems like a lot of, okay, let's put on masks and social distance and cross our fingers. and i'm sorry, but hope is not science. >> and the thing about it is that, you know, physical distancing clearly can help. but i think when we've seen this downward trend in some places or at least not having as high a trend as far as hospitalizations and deaths, it's because people have stayed at home, the ultimate sort of physical distancing. i think as soon as you start going out in public, because of duration of contact with people, because of shared public spaces, as good as you may be, as careful as you may be, there will be surfaces what are contaminated. people are going to get infected. it's just very hard, and it's not really the fault of anyone, it's just the human behavior in their situations. so until people can be tested, if they are positive, they get isolated. that's critical, and it's worked throughout history in terms of actually curbing epidemics. keep in

>>> hello, everyone, i'm kate bolduan. thanks so much for joining us this hour. you can mark your calendars for three weeks. by june, the country will have a better idea whether the reexperiment idea starting now will work out or turn out to be a very dangerous gamble, whether the rate of sicknesses decline or spike again in the united states. this is a gamble as no state has reached the key benchmark the cdc has set forward to meet before reopening, that 14-day decline in new cases. but for now it's full speed ahead as more states begin easing restrictions today. you can see them right there on your screen. by the end of this week, more than 40 states will be at least partially reopening. with that in mind, here is where the numbers stand. the u.s. death toll is now approaching 70,000. more than 1.1 million confirmed cases of coronavirus in the united states. and even president trump is now being forced to acknowledge the total number of deaths here is going to be higher than previously estimated. >> we're going to lose anywhere from 75, 80 to 100,000 people. th
