so, katie ledecky is in.egler, unfortunately, did not qualify, finishing eighth in her heat, 21st overall, and she told us that she's been battling the flu for the last five days. so, just some bad luck for great falls native kate ziegler, but 15-year-old katie ledecky will be moving on, she will be racing again. and recently, actually, i got a chance to catch up with her mom, mary jen ledecky, who said she's just soaking up this whole olympic experience. i had to ask her if she allowed herself to think even for a minute what she would do if her rising sophomore at stone ridge high school actually brings home a meldal from her summer vacation. >> i don't know. we had not -- we haven't thought about that. first of all, if she would get a medal, i guess she would walk around the arena with it, and she would certainly have an opportunity to show all of her friends, if they wanted to see it. i don't know what we would do. that is something we have not thought of. >> reporter: mary jen ledecky, katie ledecky's mot

morning dominated at least in her heat by katie. she won her heat, had the third best time, she advances to the finals which will be tomorrow evening here in london. after her prelims, i caught up with her pool side. >> i'm really happy with that swim. i was a little nervous, had a lot of adrenaline going into it. i may have taken it on a little bit fast. but hopefully that'll put me in a good position for tomorrow's finals. >> do the nerves help? and how long does that take to settle? >> i think, well, this is my first race, so just being here watching all the events sort of got me ready, and i think now the nerves are out and i'll be ready to go for tomorrow. >> what's the mind set for the next day? this is new, this is a first for you. >> yeah, i need to get some rest and be ready for tomorrow. the trials were set up the same way with prelims one day and finals the next night. so i'm really ready for that and i think i'll do well. >> it's amazing just listening to her. she's unfaez unfazed by the mag of this stage in london. kate

just this morning hanna sent katie an e-mail, the reply from katie before her 800-meter freestyle race? a bit uncharacteristic from her normally calm and composed e- mails. >> she sent me an e-mail that said it's go time with like 50 exclamation points. so as you can tell, she was very, very pumped up for this meet today. >> then to get gold it blew me away. >> she definitely will not change as a person. she is so grounded and has such a great head on her shoulders. i look up to her every day. >> katie beat janet evans record set in 1989 and her first major competition, shawn, the olympic tryouts. pretty impressive. >> can you believe that? that's an understatement. thank you. >>> you may remember this story, too, the indian woman who crashed the olympic opening ceremonies. she's apologizing tonight. she's in the red jacket. she snuck into the indian athletes march last week. she was a volunteer and cast as an extra. she wasn't actually supposed to walk onto the field but says she got carried away. >> and it was all meant with joy because it was really difficult for me to clear all the

katie, i'm going to start with you. what are the most important issues, do you think, to youth voters right now? >> they are so excited about the republican national convention. we are focused on jobs and the economy this fall. we are excited about what the romney/ryan ticket has to say about it. >> what does it offer you, do you think? >> romney and ryan are focused on a progrowth economic policy. youth, such a as myself, including young republicans are excited about what they have to say. >> what do you think is the most important issue? >> for us, we have been talking to students across the country. we believe the economy is the heart of what most are talking about. an issue like the economy, it's easy to talk to the people about the president's accomplishments. we have seen 29 months of job growth. young americans feel comfortable entering a job market after graduation. that message is honing in when we talk to young students, college students. we are excited to talk about that at the upcoming convention where we ar
