katie brooke is live in lynchburg. talk to us about the drive in right now. >> reporter: danner, icy conditions are the concern right now and in the parking lot right on the intersection of lakeside drive and 5 01. even though the main roads look safe and clear, they are very slick and hazardous. i have seen lots of plow trucks come and go and they are helping give vehicles traction in these icy conditions. i spoke with paula jones at v dot today. tells me every main road is plowed at this time, but they haven't gotten to many secondary roads. and icy conditions. those are very dangerous to drive in. she say the best thing you can do is stay off the road and let v dot continue to do their job plowing and treating the roads. as the temperatures warm in the days to come, that will help a lot. >> the rain will certainly help some of the snow go away. that is nice, but we need to be able to watch those conditions as well. it is possible that in some areas, the snow melt could create some small problems with drainage and so

katie brooke has more on him tonight live from appomattox. katie liveu mark, i'm told by friends at the evergreen baptist church today that harris lived here all his life -- he was a farmer, and had a community. sheriff letterman tells me harris lived here off twin tunnels lane in a mobile home. rescue workers found him 300 yards from his house last night around 10 p.m. they say he was in a hayfield, covered in hay. search and rescue teams just finished up their mission -- and confirm every person is accounted for now here in appomattox. state police say 20 homes were destroyed by this tornado. and at least 100 structures had damage in the 8- through evergreen and redhouse. katie liveu harris's wife was one of the 7 injured, according to state police. five of those 7 have been treated and released. the two others suffered from serious injuries and are still hospitalized. i spoke to some of the harris family today, but they didn't wish to comment about the certainly with them during this time. live in evergreen, katie brooke, abc-13 news. 3 3 3

davie brook stepped out the court room where the judge is contemplating a verdict right now. katie. >> reporter: danner, testimony wound down with a friend of spinner's who testified she was with him the day of the murder and noticed he came back to the house that day in different clothes after being gone for about an hour that afternoon. an investigator testified about and the insurance card registerand the insurance card registered to james payne in spinner's car. the judge also watched and listened to audio recording and video of police interview with spinner days after the murder. in closing arguments, the defense said the commonwealth is relying on circumstantial evidence and argued since spinner used cocaine all day and affects premeditation and not a first-degree murder case. the defense said likely that spinner only found the body but took off because he was high on crack cocaine. the commonwealth stated in closing arguments that spin remember motives, means and opportunity and the judge contemplating that decision on the verdict. he should make that just around 5:10, and i

. >> we have team coverage of the aftermath tonight with katie brooke checking road conditionsbrooke checking road conditions. george flickinger has an update on the forecast, and suri crowe saw just how much damage this storm did to your cars. >> reporter: well, noreen, if you were coming downwards road any time soon, you will notice some mud on the road. this dirt berm behind me collapsed melting quickly in the son and warm temperatures. we drove around the city checking out road conditions and public works have done a great job of getting the roads clean. crews finished up their shift this afternoon and tell me every road is clear at this time. the sun has even dried up some roads and still some possibility that some roads could refreeze. they treated rose with salt and have crews just in case. the city had $150,000 left in their snow removal reserve fundtheir snow removal reserve fund. she haven't got numbers back from this snowstorm but she thinks they will be within the budget and hopes this will be the last storm of the season. >> in this particular snow, it warmed up right af

katie brooke has the latest on that tonight. >> reporter: danner nothing will happen any time soon. last night the board of supervisors heard from john hashedy, the president of citizens group concerned about the landfill. the campbell county landfill joined the regional authority in 2008. trash hauled in from appomattox trash coming in is called an extensive gas emission. >> used to be when you stepped outside but not anymore. >> the odor is getting to the point where it is actually coming into people's houses and it is to the point where people close to the landfill can't even go outside really and enjoy their yards. >> reporter: chairman eric bear lives half a mile from the landlives half a mile from the landfill and says the stench is unbearable. >> i am almost embarrassed at times have people come over. they step out of the car and your house stinks. they don't understand it is not my house but the landfill up the road. >> reporter: he says the frustrating part, the county has to live with the rotten air but their county vote makes up one of the four on the regional authority.

live in license, katie brooke, abc 13 news. >>> the freezing rain and sleet we got led to a lot of power outages. we caught up with the crew in danville working to restore power. families in the north davis drive off piney forest road woke up without power. the danville utility engineer said a couple of big power lines brought down three utility poles around 1 a.m. and customers have freezing rain to blame for that. >> very dangerous. you wouldn't want to be around it when it happened, that's for sure. >> there is no way to prevent this. cutting all the trees away, that is one benefit, and just keeping the right-of-ways clean. danville utilities. the city hopes to restore power to everyone by midnight. >> noreen: the roanoke valley was the hardest hit with downed trees and power outages. appalachian power reported 50,000 customers are without power. there are 24,000 without right now. ice and tries again were the main culprit. the ice causes those tree branches, even whole trees to snap and brings down the power poles, of course. appalachian power has called in crews from outside the sta

katie brooke reports. 3 a normal afternoon in january for malaka payne quickly became horrifying. she says her son fell asleep in the car and wouldn't wake up. (:04)malaka payne, milan's mom, "he was very disoriented, very spaced out." once she got him up and into the house he fell and she knew something was very wrong. (:03)malaka payne, milan's mom, "we left immediately and went to the er." 12 days in the hospital and an mri showed a tumor on milan's brain. two surgeries later.. doctors drained a lot of fluid. (:05)malaka payne, milan's mom, "i was so scared the whole time cause they told me what could happen." the next step for the 7 year old.. a month of radiation and four months of chemotherapy. malaka payne graduated in august from sylvan mellou she's now a stylist in forest, but had to take a break since her son got sick. keena wood, admissions director, "she's done a great job here supporting our organization and going out and representing our school very well and we want to supportther in her time of need." so they're hosting a cut-a-thon. 5 dollar hair cuts with all proc
