katie: that is the heart of it.ven if crypto trading volumes are going down, and they have fallen off a cliff, could that be a silver lining for coinbase at any point? the fact that that -- maybe they could focus on the custody business? dan: custody business is better than going out of business, right? i would not call it the silver lining, i would call it may be a lifesaver at this point for them. remember, if those altcoins in staking which is 30% of revenue, if those go away and the probability of it is quite high at this point given the sec and the lawsuit, nothing is going to matter. i do not think the custody business is going to be meaningful enough to more than offset the cash drain coming from losing those altcoins. that is my point, hopefully i am explaining it the right way. jon: let me ask a follow-up. if people are looking at what this business could become over the short to long-term, what exactly in your opinion are they investing in? dan: if they are bullish? jon: either way. dan: or in general? jon

katie: you have seen kre come back to life.t's been a performing kbe, the broader banking sector over the past month. both of those feeling a little pain today. i would ask you that, gerard. how sustainable is that performance we are seeing out of the regionals outperforming the big banks? garard: it is going to be reflective on with the federal reserve is going to do. one we look at the last tightening cycles, when the on fed funds the bank stocks do quite well. problems in march with the bank failures, it took that off course. to 1994-1995 and even 2040 2006, when the fed reached a terminal rate the bank stocks did quite well after the terminal rate was reached. both the regionals and the money centers. because of what happened in march, the deposit issue, the smaller banks were hit harder. they have a better balance coming up these lows. jon: in terms of the consolidation story which we heard early on during the banking turmoil that there is ultimately going to be more merger activity in the sector. what is your current view

katie: i'm a believer that growth will recover.ve we will continue to innovate and find new paths for growth. that is been the long arc of history. we will get a recession and then recover to growth levels. we don't have to talk about ai because everyone's part of that. generative ai is another example of how we continue to innovate and push forward. in greater opportunity for expansion. i'm optimistic we will recover to new levels. romaine: you have seen a lot of investors. guy: romantic conversation with katie koch. you continue to watch that on life go on your terminal. what i want to do now in terms of the market is. we are winding down this thursday and we are basically going sideways. there is not a lot really happening at a headline level. take a look at the volatility indexes. taxes up by .2%, italy a little better today up 5.9%. in aggregate, nothing to see here. on the stock 600, we are perfectly at unch. we climbed back to unchanged on the day. index level, nothing to see here. i keep reiterating this, this turn. the car

i'm katy tur.sident joe biden is in connecticut today speaking at the national safer communities summit out there, and he's advocating stricter gun laws. he's marking one year since he signed the bipartisan safer communities act, which in the aftermath of uvalde enhanced background checks for buyers under 21, provided $750 million for red flag laws, and made it harder for domestic abusers to possess guns, which he just mentioned right there. he says has led to fewer deaths in domestic situations. it was at the time that legislation the most significant action on guns in three decades. but now president biden says he wants to do more. it was just the beginning, he said a moment ago. joining me from west hartford, connecticut, is nbc news correspondent julie tsirkin. so he's doing this in tandem with senator chris murphy out there in connecticut, who you cover closely, and who obviously finds this issue very close to him, given what happened in sandy hook and connecticut. president biden made a point

katie greifeld has more on that. i guess if you look at some of the trends with chapter 11 announcements, one of the common thread has been companies with debt issues. katie: exactly. behind me i have the bloomberg bankruptcy index. you go back to 2019, it doesn't look as scary. we had a big spike in 2020. this looks at corporations with more than $50 in reported liability ,and it tracks activity, bankruptcy activity among that subset. kind of distorted -- $500 million, that is -- distorted by the spike in 2020. if you train your eyes on 2022, it has been increasing quite a bit. we see more committees filing bankruptcy -- more companies filing for bankruptcy. if you break down the performance of the corporate credit market, it is the riskier credits that have been outperforming. up there in purple you have leverage loans leading the way and you have the triple c's, drunkest junk debt out there, posting year to date--junkiest junk debt out there, posting year-to-date returns. over the past year still negative when it

>> it's tough to assess, katy. a lot of it will depend on how judge cannon decides to view the legal issues involved here, and of course there's the wide open question of where she stands on this case. in reality, the former president's lawyers will have a good argument to make here. it's a little bit complicated and inside of the weeds, but because this earlier decision saying that the notes could be used came in the process of a grand jury investigation, it's not what's called law of the case. law of the case essentially means that once there's been a ruling in a case that's been affirmed on appeal, the parties can't revisit it. you can't endlessly litigate those same issues in one says, so that would hold here, if perhaps, there had been a post indictment decision, but because we're talking about a grand jury decision made by a judge in another circuit, judge cannon may be able to reopen this can of worms, especially if trump's lawyers can come forward with new facts that judge howell didn't have the chance to c
