who is kelly thomas?nown figure on the streets of fullerton, california. he was homeless. he was also schizophrenic. he's also a son and a brother. on july 5th fullerton police responded to reports of a man trying to break into cars near a bus station. now before i go any further, i have to warn you, the picture i'm about to show you is very graphic. witnesses say what began with a search of thomas' backpack ended with this. take a look here with me. that's kelly thomas before he was allegedly beaten and tased by six fullerton police officers, and that other picture there, that's what he looked like after it, bloodied and bruised, and as you can see barely recognizable. thomas fell into a coma and died from those injuries five days later. crowds of strangers saw what happened, recording what they could with their phones and with surveillance cameras nearby. >> then all the cops came and hog tied him. please, god, please, dad. >> you may not have been able to make that out there at the very end, but kelly

kelly thomas, who police are accused of beating to death.e hearing that a federal lawsuit involving the fullerton police department is being filed today. a press conference is taking place at this moment in los angeles. we're told the thomas family attorney is briefing reporters about this federal lawsuit and you are looking live there from our affiliate kcal and ccbs. we have a crew there to bring us the latest. this comes in the wake of kelly thomas' beating and death in the public outrage that has followed. we've followed this case on this show very closely. i have to warn you, the photo we're about to show you is graphic. it's hard to look it, but it's important. this is kelly thomas before and after the alleged beating. now, thomas was homeless and schizophrenic. witnesses say what you're seeing was done at the hands of six fullerton police officers back on july 5th. what began with reports of car burglaries and a search of thomas' backpack, witnesses say ended like this. thomas being hogtied, tasered multiple times and brutally beaten.

. >> reporter: kelly thomas was a 37-year-old homeless drifter who liked to hang out around the main bus station. after being beaten by police last month, he died. >> citizens are being beat to death. >> it was murder. >> reporter: at a contentious city council meeting last night, people called for the police involved in the incident to be criminally charged. >> game's over. >> reporter: they're riled up over videos of the incident posted on youtube. on a bus security camera, witnesses can be heard commenting on the six officers hitting thomas. >> they're pulling his hair, kicking the [ bleep ] out of him. >> reporter: this one shot by a witness is indistinct, but thomas can be heard calling out for his father. >> screaming, begging for his life, telling the officers, i'm sorry, i'm sorry. god, help me, please. and then, of course, the end of it, last thing in his life were dad, dad. >> reporter: kelly thomas' father ron, a former orange county sheriff's deputy has been an active participant in all of the protests over his son's death. this security camera mounted near the bus statio

you this photo, this is what happened to kelly thomas. strangers who watched helpless say the violent aftereffects you see here happened at the hands of six fullerton, california, police officers. according to the "los angeles times," this all began when police got a call that someone was trying to break into cars. officers reportedly found things in thomas' backpack that didn't belong to him. police say thomas tried to run and resisted them. but i want you to watch what just one observer recorded as police responded.
