. >>> hello and welcome to a second look, i'm ken wayne. in the rite of spring, major league bay ball started their season. opening day has always been a big deal everyone in the days of the old pacific coast league. the oakland oaks took part in a spade through downtown oakland on their way to the season's first game. that was against the san francisco sea hawks. a dancer named dorel dina threw the first pitch. we couldn't find any results to tell us who won that game. this is a year of anniversaries for baseball. it was 50 years ago this month that dodger stadium opened in los angeles and perhaps the biggest anniversary of all this year is in boston where fenway park turns 100 years old. randy shandobil visited fenway park and compared it to candle stick park. >> reporter: there's more american history in boston than just about any other city in the country. yet of all the shrines here, the one locals seem to love the most is a ballpark. this is the most available piece of real estate in the city of boston. nothing else matters. >> report

ktvu's ken wayne tells us how long it's going to be shut down and how this is nothing compared for drivers in the next few weeks. >> reporter: caltrain started the closure about two hours ago right on schedule. northbound doyle drive has the far right lane closed and it'll remain that way until noon tomorrow. this is all part of a major project that will culminate with the driveway being shut down and demolished at the end of the month. 100,000 vehicles a day use doyle drive. built back in 1936 it's the main artery from the northeast side of the city. tonight caltrans started prep work removing a section of pipe that's buried in the concrete sidewalk on the north side of doyle drive. >> there's an embedded pipe that contains asbestos. so they need to remove that prior to the big demolition. >> reporter: caltrans held a meeting tonight at the recreation center to keep residents informed about the project. caltrans says it's not expecting any major traffic disruptions. >> there's some sort of a reverse commute so we want to be aware that drivers know there's a lane closure. >> reporter: the

ktvu's ken wayne is at nasa tonight, where scientists are asking for the public's help. >> reporter: julie, nasa scientists say what happened last weekend is incredibly rare. tonight, they showed us pieces of the meteorite that caused such a big stir sunday morning. these are pieces of meteorite believed to be millions of years old, found near sutter's mill. >> this event was big, and produced a meteor that was very exciting and unusual. >> reporter: these are the only known pictures of the meteorite. what makes it so unusual is that it survived the entry into earth's atmosphere, without burning the organic materials inside. materials not found on earth. >> this material still has the good stuff in it. the amino acids, the sugars. all of those compounds that could have helped life on a planet. >> reporter: the debris hitting earth near the american river. >> i suddenly noticed these little rocks on the ground. >> he also found meteorite fragments, driving straight from arizona to search. >> this is only the third time, a meteorite has been witnessed to fall in california in the state

. >>> good evening, i'm ken wayne, heather holmes is off tonight. the bay area sailors are paying tribute to five crew members killed in a boating accident last week. we want to show you live pictures from san francisco bay. it is beautiful out there. boats on the water even though the memorial begins in about an hour, ktvu's eric rasmussen has more on the tribute tonight. >> reporter: ken and as you mentioned today, so many are out here on the water, it it is about to get busier. organizers are expecting at least 70 boats to be part of the memorial. and they will begin a procession soon behind me led by the fire boat and the u.s. coast guard. the focus of course is remembering the lives of the five sailors who were lost last week when the 38-foot sail boat, low speed chase was hit by waves and turned over off the fair lawn islands, jordan from, alexis bush, and three others survived in the accident. we tried to reach out to all three of them but recently they were not available for any comment. low speed chase was among 50 boats taking part in the

good evening, i'm ken wayne, heather holmes is off tonight. >>> the coast guard is scouring the ocean around the farallone islands, 27 miles outside of the golden gate. trying to find survivors of a boat accident. the mishap occurred during a boat race around the islands. ktvu's john sasaki has been monitoring the search and joins us live from the s.a.t. francis yacht club with details. >> reporter: ken, the coast guard says the race started here and headed out west and 27 miles out to the farallone islands and that is where things went wrong. from news chopper 2, one long time sailor told me that the water off the coast was chop yes and in big swells that the boat known as "the slow speed chase" grounded itself on rocks and turtled, as boaters call it or turned over in water. eight people went into the water in that crash and the coast guard was able to save three of them, a couple of them off the rock and recover one body, but crews are still searching for four people from the vessel. >> the 38' sailing vessel put off an electronic position indicating beacon that the coast guard pic

good evening, i'm erick rasmussen, ken wayne is off tonight. >> em heather holmes. >> the bay area windy weather has stalled the rescue of saivil sailors. crew member are aboard a western australian yacht and about the efforts to bring the sailors to shore. >> reporter: heather, we're live in front of a cutter that is similar to the one sent out to that troubled yacht and this is what we know at this hour. this is what we have learned from the coast guard. we want to show you video of the geraldton off the top. this is the yacht in question, which has had its steering mounting knocked out by huge waves. this video was captured a month ago as the geraldton was leaving china. the coast guard tells us that there may been additional person among the three that include a 50-year-old british doctor and 62-year-old australian farmer and 28-year- old croatian software engineer and they may have suffered back, rib and pelvic injuries. the chopper hasn't been able to launch because of weather conditions and finally the geraldton is about 260 miles away from the san francisco shore, due to dock som
