the kids agreeing with that kid, as the bystander said, become the perpetrators. the kids who don't like it or the target probably aren't going to be saying anything. so you watch the kids walk away and assess them. then if you hear as the kis are walking down the hall, she's such a b, you say, wait 1 second, i just heard you call me a b i'm coming at you with respect, i'm talking to you, i'm not yelling at you, i'm not doing this, i'm not doing that, i'm coming and telling you what i want for you and every kid in this school. are we clear? now go to your class. now, if the kid does that and he does it to you again, sure, write it up. but it has to be with the authority of you talking eye to eye with this kid with respect, with dignity. because it's not cool to just give it to the principal because the principal all day would be doing the write up and that frankly does not help the teacher's authority in that hall in that moment. they have to have the power, to have the authority at that moment you just called me a b i know you are 6 foot 4, i know you are mumblin

it is with kids that have both parents and kids without the parents at home that it's happening. we need to embrace a full court program on this because the numbers tell us and dictate to us that we have to have this high level strong fierce collaboration to end bullying and to make sure it doesn't proceed into its worst stages. and so i want to just thank everyone for this collaboration, i know our human rights commission, theresa, is here, i know commissioner is here as well and all of the bay area to work together to utilize the resources that our justice department is offering. their guidance and leadership as well, and to note that it can happen to any group. if you've heard what we're trying to do here, i know other mayors across this bay area are trying to do, we're trying to unleash the talent and creativeness of all of our communities not to succumb to things that will suppress that talent and in order to do that, you've got to really erase these barriers that are created sometimes by our own ignorance and sometimes by what people think are playful things and yet they ar

when i am dealing with kids in possession of naked pictures of other kids. what are they going to do when i cite them? i didn't have answers or ones i didn't think were a comfortable fit when kids had these problems and started with kids after they were already in trouble and grew out of that because there was so much need in the school on the prevention side too, so it really is -- if i can get to the next one, the next slide. so yeah it's a proactive and reactive approach so it started on the reactive side. i think law enforcement is good at reacting to things so started with a program with the at risk kids that were already violators and grew to a prevention tool in the schools that law enforcement can present and oftentimes there are great nonprofits that have amazing programs but for a law enforcement officer in uniform to present it and not serious enough but my kids are going to get that i worked at cartoon network today. that's serious. that's what my kids are hearing about tonight, but law enforcement has a serious tone so we created this program fo

these kids are not mentally ill. they are breaking under ho rendous set of circumstances and yes we can discuss resiliency and all these other things, but we have to have room in the conversation for our very sensitive kids as well. >> thank you so much. [applause] >> all right. one final thought from each of you and we have to wrap it up and i want to talk about your project and with the schools. >> i want us to think about -- as the day we have been challenging ourselves what we can do to make a contribution, one of the things to think about is the way in which i'm trying to address the problem of sensitivity and there are some kids of different thresholds and definitions and everyone has the right to their emotional truth and we need kids to learn more social skills and resiliency and all of these things that i am doing and never would have done it and hit me in the last year or two. i was going to do a chapter -- i am and kids on the spectrum of autism andace perers and targeted or initiated into perpetrating, wh

i show parents how to assert themselves with kids how to set limits on kids, so that it's not the kid dictating to you. i also show parents how to stop the bargaining to stop the negotiating. you've got these responsibilities you've got to do them. i'm not gonna negotiate your homework with you. you've gotta do your homework before you play video games. that's it, case closed or the video games are getting locked in a closet. it's as simple as pie. and so what happens is in the total transformation program, i show parents how to stop the arguing and stop the negotiating and bargaining and start focusing on this kid meeting his responsibilities in a way that's going to help him be successful. >> okay, so right away you're just gonna abolish that whole idea that the parent says, "my child doesn't understand what i'm saying," and, in turn, the child says "well, my parents don't understand what i'm feeling." >> right away, you're gonna feel like you're in control. and right away, that kid is gonna understand that if he's not in compliance it's he that's on the outside, not you. >> you're

, all the kids are local, they will see the kids at burger king, hey, i saw you guys. so these guys are real in the community. >> it's also for us that a lot of these people here have done this many times. i know it's not for the money because it's not that much. they get about $350, something like that, we measure it by the hours they show up, if they did a rehearsal or a performance, obviously they're not going to get that much if they don't show up every time, but it's way below minimum wage. >> that's right. >> we usually go to -- i have children and we usually go to my kid's school. i see it every time i good to school because they remember me, what's going on with them. i see it change myself. >> did a guy actually fall from the freeway? >> yeah, you may not be surprised but that kind of thing does happen fairly regularly. >> crazy. >> i have a question about the (inaudible) funding issues, do you have any intention to fund more so you can expand, things like this. >> all i can tell you is that those decisions are made by, you know, in our department, in our divi

what do kids do for a day at camp newman? >> so our youngest kids are entering third grade. oldest are entering seniors in high school. our youngest kids can come from 10 days or 13 days to 15 days. by the time they get entering 11th, 12th grade for high school, they are coming for a full eight weeks, spending the whole summer. it starts when they are younger, rotating through parts activities, arts activities, music, dance, frisbee, hiking out, learning about sustainable agriculture and then the older they get, the more twists they have and the more specialized their program gets. >> what is the hiking program. >> it's a sustainable group, green experience. our goal is to make it a self- sustaining community. we have gardens out there, goats, chickens. the chickens -- eggs the chickens lay are eaten every day. our 101th graders spend one week, living in tepees, with no electricity and really live on the land and learn how to work the land and the importance of connecting with nature. our younger kids take time out of their day trips, spend a couple of hours learning what th
