kris sanchez has more. what does this mean for customers and employees there?> for the employees, we know that the stock just lost about 50% of its value on early trading this morning according to cnbc. they should continue to get paid. they should also continue to go on the job. but they likely will find out more details today. this announcement today is really the first step in pg&e seeking that bankruptcy protection. they have to give notice to threes 15 days ahead of bankruptcy filing. and they say they could file bankruptcy by the 29th of january. this is the kind of bankruptcy that allows the utility to continue operating while it reorganizes. pg&e is facing billions of dollars in financial liabilities related to the bute county fire that killed 88 people an the deadly wildfire in santa rosa last year. the state attorney general says the company could face criminal charges in addition to financial liability if the faulty equipment is what sparked the deadly wildfires. the nbc bay area investigative unit has done reporting on that story. and just yesterday

"today in the bay" kris sanchez joins us live from san jose with what went wrong. problem, kris. >> reporter: whatever it was it appears to be isolated to that propel pump behind me. the rest of the shell station appears to be unaffected. it happened saturday as 25 drivers pulled into the station to get that propel fuels and drove off to find their cars weren't right. a mechanic across the street told us the gas had a blue tint instead of being perfectly clear. what was was in that propel fuel damaged the tanks and fuel injectors. this is off highway 87 in san jo jose. >> it's the first i hear there's been issues. i'll be a little bit watchful for a while. >> fixings my car out of the blue would be terrible. >> we reached out and a rep told us they shut down this pump while they figured out what went wrong and they are paying for repairs and rental cars for drivers affected. they shut down all of the propel pumps so they could figure out if there was a problem not just here but at some of their other pumps. they haven't found anything at this pump. right now it appe

that's where "today in the bay" kris sanchez joins us. kris, how long do they have to move out? >> reporter: they certainly don't have as long as they wanted or were hoping, marcus. the folks that live in the hotel behind me have until january 31st now to finally get out. they got notice last summer when we first started covering this for "today in the bay" that a chica chicago-based real estate firm bought the hotel and planned to turn it back into a hotel as it was an apartment building up to that point. tenants of 75 unit six-story building got five months' notice. some of them have lived here for decades. here is what they told us when they first got that notice. >> many of my clients bike and walk to me. so not only would i be losing my home but my place of employment. >> do we need luxury hotels more than we need housing? >> so that is a good question. i looked up housing data for palo alto and there were fewer than 28,000 units of housing in 2018, 94% of those are occupied. 3700 is the average rent, $2.5 million is the average home price. the city manager at that time wen

"the mercury news" reports the n non-nfl revenue instead of $5 million they've seen in past years. mayor lisa gilmore said in a statement "we are going to hold the 49ers to the rules they agreed to when stadium opened in 2014. we can have successful concerts at the stadium on weekdays and weekends and allow for people in our community who work and go to school to sleep during the week.

kris sanchez, today in the bay. >> thank. earlier this morning utility announcing it will be filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy. we brought you live coverage all morning on today in the bay. bod redell is live in san carlos. tell us, what's flexion for tne utility company? >> reporter: we just spoke with jerry hill who has been highly critical of pg and e after if pipeline explosion. he sees opportunity in this fil come out a better safer company. his concern is that the state tries to bail out the utility and that pg and e has not learned his lesson. there war lot of developments over the past 24 hours. the ceo stepped down this morning. utility announced it would be filing for chapter 11 protection in 15 days because it can't cover the more than $30 billion in potential liabilities for wild fires. they determined that pg and e started the north bay fires that killed 22 people and looking into whether the utilities responsible for the fire that killed 86 people. in a statement pg and e said that your gas and electric service w

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live in milpitas this morning. kris, you well know, we hear a lot of complaints about potholes, road repair. you got some good news here. >> reporter: we talked to some folks at a gas station in milpitas and the first lady said california roads are terrible, there are potholes everywhere and i had to tell her, this is a report about how safety laws are working in california. so we rank right at the top in terms of the number of safety laws here, both in terms of the number of laws in place to keep drivers on the straight and narrow and also in terms of the number o deaths. the report this morning from advocates for highway and auto safety survey states for what they list as 16 fundamental safety laws. these are from seat belt laws to helmet laws for motorcycle riders to laws regarding car seats. california ties for third place in the nation in terms of how many basic safety laws we have. we have ten of the 16 suggested laws, including those seat belt motorcycle helmet and car seat laws. what the group says californi

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live at the epicenter there. kris, did you feel it?> reporter: we didn't feel it. we were down in san jose, talking about the tsa situation. the government shutdown, we felt that earthquake or when we felt it hit social media at least. we're not too far from the epicenter, and though that earthquake was downgraded just a little bit, certainly a lot of folks here told us they felt it. >> woke me up, yeah, woke my son up, too. >> reporter: that's tough. >> it was. >> i was in my van, i was putting air in it, all of a sudden the van started going like this. i thought, is that an earthquake? it was only a few seconds. >> it's like a long push. >> reporter: minutes after it hit, i asked on twitter who felt it, and folks were saying they felt it in alame t memeda pleas hills, san jose, menlo park, blackhawk, san carlos, burlingame. in san francisco folks felt it there, castro district, pacific heights and a lot of folks said they also heard the earthquake as well, mostly i feel bad for that guy who said the earthquake woke his baby up becaus

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us with what police are calling an incident of swatting. good morning, kris. >> reporter: good morning. you might have heard of swatting, when somebody calls in a report to police about a crime, and that crime turns out to be a prank or a false report. this is the scene from palo alto daily post, outside that two-bedroom home on emerson street, where this all happened last night. in this case, the caller claimed to be a facebook executive who claimed to have shot and killed his wife. now, palo alto police got the call about 9:15 last night from that man, claiming he shot his wife, tied up his children and planted bombs all over their home. the caller identified himself by name as a facebook executive. again, that turned out not to be true. the caller also threatened to kill anyone who tried to help, whether it was police or fire. it took about an hour for palo alto police to clear that scene and according to "the daily post" at that time, the man at that address, who is a facebook executive was detained and it turned out to be untrue, someon
