kristen: ok. from what you have seen, our kids actually objecting to keeping the masks on the whole day at school? i'm not talking about a kid having a hard time keeping it on, she forgets, but do they oppose it the way some parents do? do you think most of the opposition comes from parents who are projecting, thinking their kids can't be happy that way? >> i think at least in san francisco, a lot of kids have been normalized to this. it is a cultural thing at this point where you have your mask on all day. i daughter doesn't object. sometimes she will say, mom, get out the mask when we go into a store. but if there was a rule she had to wear a big funky hat and i told her to do that everyday, she wouldn't. the question is, do we need to be doing that anymore? there are lots of things kids can get used to, that we can get them to do every day. the question is, is it effective? there are questions now about whether it is effective for kids to wear masks in schools, and is there harm? there is poten

kristen: got it. so the guards might go to sleep but the pit bulls will stay with you and do the job when they need to, and that is why part of the reason why most of us may not need a fourth shot. but are there certain groups that may still benefit from an additional booster? >> they would be at least three populations. the first two would probably be those who would use the additional shot to prevent serious disease. they may be the elderly population, although we do not have as much guidance for that right now. maybe later on in the wintertime. the second population is immune compromised situation. they are already getting four shots. that is not to give additional reminders, that is to increase the chance they will have a vaccine response. the third group is kind of interesting and it is not necessarily to prevent serious disease because they are well protected by three shots. but in some situations a population like health-care workers may need to be preserved in terms of workforce. you may even

kristen: right.e sometimes see different behaviors when it comes to themselves versus their kids and different decision-making processes. i want to get to our viewer questions. simone asks, dr. galli cited cases are dropping in california -- we know that to be the case. but someone wants to know, our cases dropping or is it that there are people testing at home and not reporting their positive test results? therefore skewing our sense of belief that we are coming out of this. >> i think she makes a very good point. that home testing -- people are supposed to report their positive tests, but the vast majority of people are not. several studies have now been done to show that still the case comes that we have correlate pretty well with how the virus is doing in the community. so although they don't reflect exactly how many people are infected, they do give us a good sense of the trajectory. and the trajectory is right now straight down. kristen: the big question of whether it is too soon or the right t

kristen: excellent. we have been pre-growing -- we have been preview wing what the governor will say. as we move out out out out out back-and-forth phase of the pandemic of closing things, opening things, it will be shots, masks, awareness, readiness, testing, education, and rx for medicine. let's talk about readiness, the r part of it. how do we stay ready for anything that may come, whether it is another variant, another possible surge, major or minor? what do you think? dr. gandhi: think of it this way. pretend we are in 1919 summer, and that was the end of the influenza pandemic, but it was not the end of influenza. and what happened after the "pandemic phase" ended his there was always vigilant for influenza. in fact, we did not have a vaccine for influenza until 1942, so the vigilance was all testing people, making sure people are not coming in too sick. now that we have this wastewater surveillance, which is something we have learned from this pandemic, the sewage can be monitored for viruses, now

kristen: i want to talk about solutions. it has come up in the past, hiring retired police officers to patrol these districts. if these ideas -- i don't want to say recycle, but they are kind of being recycled, brought back to the forefront. what can we take away in terms of how well they worked in the past and if that is a reason for optimism or pessimism this time around? >> again, that is hard to answer in a tightly wrapped package, but there needs to be input from many different people, from community leaders, from legislation, from community leaders themselves. specifically with "the san francisco standard" we like to look at all things with optimism. if we look at the way that this crime has been handled in the past, some of my reporting charts the evolution and the responses from the city, hopefully we can learn from what is being done, but again, i cannot draw any easy conclusions. kristen: that is the big take away, and i think the way you put it together is fascinating. thank you so much for coming on. >> thank you
