kron four's. dan thorn reports. >> a san jose mother's life is changed forever. 40 year-old laura barajas has had her limbs amputated while battling a bacterial infection. scary. it's just been really heavy on all of that's terrible friend anna messina says back in late july barajas had bought tilapia from a local market for dinner. she cooked it and ate it alone. and within days got very ill and was then hospitalized. their whole lives are going to change after this. messina believes the infection was caused by vibrio vulnificus, a bacterial infection. the cdc has been warning about the ways that you can get infected with this bacteria are one. you can eat, something that's contaminated which in some people causes a gust or 2, right us or just a stomach illness. and then the other way is actually by having a cut or a tattoo or some other breaking your skin exposed to water in which this bug lives. >> ucsf, infectious disease expert doctor natasha spottswood says the bacteria is especially concern

kron four's lawrence karnow standing by there with kron. 4 weather coming up. but we begin with kron 4 sarah stinson who is out in san francisco tonight after talking to air quality officials and sarah, what do they want us to know? >> well, catherine, this smoke from up north that came in so quickly and it's so intense that people thought the fire was local and they actually called 9-1-1. in san francisco. turns out that's not the case. but it is definitely intense. and we're feeling the effects. >> a hazy san francisco skyline could be seen from a ferry heading to the east bay tuesday afternoon. and no, that's not fog. that's thick smoke from wildfires in northern california and oregon. the bay area air quality management district put out an advisory through at least wednesday. right now we're seeing probably the worst impacts along the delta in san francisco. >> a southern marin county down just a mateo county, smoke impacts are possible throughout the bay area. the air now fire and smoke map shows most of the bay area in red, meaning unhealthy air for all.

philippe djegal all kron. 4 news. >> all right. a look at the 4 zone forecast. we're looking live from the top of mount tam sort of toward the headlines, although not a whole lot. we can see there. >> yeah, you can see little just a little. the top of the sales force tower, for instance, but it's pretty clear out. their lawrence has the air quality in general. yeah, generally pretty good around the bay area, although of course we've got those fires burning in oregon and also in northern california in even if that wind just which is a little bit, we can see these little impulses of some of that smoke work its way back in the bay area. so got a little haze out there right now. not terrible. i'm not poor air quality. here's a look from the east bay hills from berkeley, back toward the coastline. you can see that patchy fog moving in. then you see a little haze out there near the surface. but overall things looking good. but boy, we've got a lot of fires burning in oregon and washington as those winds begin to switch. and you can see a little normally component here
