>> reporter: hi, krystal.l, not only the american airlines and the canadians but also the german airlines, the dutch, the french, swiss air, austrian air. they've all canceled their flights. it's not clear for how long. of course, tensions high because of the downing of the malaysian plane in the ukraine. but what happened here was with the rockets from hamas flying into israel, one of them fell about a mile from the airport here. it did damage to three houses only a mile away. for that reason, the airlines got nervous. it's the first time, by the way -- this has happened before, i should point out, in 1991. the foreign airlines also stopped flying into here when the iraqis were firing scuds at tel aviv. it's happened before, but the israelis issued a strong reaction to the move by the american airlines, which then was followed by many of the other airlines. the israelis said that this is simply a reward for terror, and they called on the international airlines to resume their flights as quickly as possible. n

>> reporter: hi, krystal. well, the great disappointment, of course, is the cease-fire. secretary of state john kerry was speaking in cairo. he said he's going to be continuing, now leaving cairo, going to paris, where he said he's going to keep working. he said he's going to try to narrow the gap between israel and hamas. but full marks to kerry for what he's been trying to do. when the israeli cabinet rejected it, they didn't reject it outright. they said they're seeking modifications in the seek-fire proposal. and of course we haven't yet heard from hamas. there's so far been no reaction from hamas at all to kerry's proposal. no public reaction anyway. so his work cut out to get the two sides together. there seems to be in urgency on the israeli side or palestinian side despite the terrible loss of life in gaza. there seems to be no great urgency to reach a cease-fire. each side is still insisting on its conditions. the idea of stopping the fighting in order to relieve the burden on the people in gaza, that doesn't seem to be a major priority in the calculations of ei

. >> reporter: hi, krystal. well, as you mentioned, the palestinian casualties reached the 100 mark today. at least 101 palestinians have been killed now in the last four days of israel's attack on gaza. the israelis say they're doing their best, though, to limit civilian casualties. they do that by what they call knock on the roof policy. that means when they're going to attack a house, first of all, they hit it with a bomb with no explosive. it's a warning. one-minute warning. then one minute later they hit with a fuller force of a rocket with explosive blowing it up. the reason they're attacking those houses, they say, is that they either house militant leaders or it's their controlled operation center or rockets are hidden there. all these reasons make it so difficult to fight in a civilian area. of course, including civilian casualties. those civilian casualties put pressure on israel. so today prime minister netanyahu has been speaking with world leaders, president obama, the german leader angela merkel, a

. >> krystal, good afternoon. investigation into what brought down mh-17 is more crucial than ever with the u.n. saying it believes that war crimes may have been committed in the apparent shooting down of that aircraft. yet, that same investigation is getting more and more difficult here. i traveled with the monitors and investigators from the dutch investigators, australian investigators, as well as the monitors who have been here for some time. i was with them on the road to the crash site when we came across fighting, the front lines between the pro-russian separatists and the ukrainian military. we saw the pro-russian separatists dug in, pointing their weapons right across that front line in the. in the background, there was mortar fire. the investigators managed to negotiate, it seems, a temporary truce for them to make their way through. so bitter is the battle between these two sides that they had to turn around and come back, saying there was artillery getting closer and closer to them. they say they are f

all right, krystal. there's a new bill being introduced right now that would call for voluntary reunification with family, but as luke russert writes about this, it's unclear why any child would voluntarily go back to the country they tritr tried so hard to flee. so the border crisis has the president in a bind. he is a man who generally tries to find the middle ground. there is no middle ground on this. either they say or they are sent back. which ever way we go, one side or the other will find that as part of the ruination of america. >> yeah, i think that's right. i'd like to try to distinguish in this case between, you know, the political consequences of what's going to happen, however we end up addressing the child migrant crisis from the sort of politics surrounding it, which are going to be kind of unpredictable and a little beside the point when you have so many people possibly whose lives are at stake. but right now i think the president wants to move on a bill that would cost about $4 billion.
