ktvu channel 2 news. >>> and ktvu has continuing coverage of the bay bridge closure and its impact on traffic. sal will be back with another check on road conditions. plus, we'll tell you about the work going on right now to demolish the old span. and we're always here for you on ktvu.com. just look for our special section under hot topics. >>> we have some breaking news right now. a suspicious package found at san jose state. maureen, what can you tell us about what happened? >> reporter: i'm on the campus at san jose state university. shortly before 6, we heard a boom. we need to tell you that san jose's police bomb squad have responded here to the campus to investigate this suspicious package near tower hall and moore's auditorium. tower hall was evacuated. here's some of the crime tape that surrounded a big portion of san jose state. essentially, the center of campus was shut down while police investigated this. again, i told you, in the last ten minutes, we heard a boom. we are now told that was part of the process for the bomb squad to determine what the suspicious package was. we can now tell you it was not a bomb. san jose state university says it might be a book but it was definitely not a bomb. police had destroyed that. part of the campus is still shut down. but the university says that classes and the home game, which is off campus, the home football game tonight, they say that is also not affected. we got word that the suspicious package was not a bomb. police expect to clear the scene in the next hour. >> maureen, just one quick question. was that loud explosion inside or did they take the suspicious package, which turned out to be nothing, outside and then explode it? >> reporter: the suspicious package was found near the hall, outside. i am currently surrounded by dozens of students. you could feel the boom in your chest. it was loud, it was thunderous. they said farther away it sounded like a rifle. those closer to the scene could physically feel this. i heard students scream and they were kind of nervous. a lot of people gathered here at the crime tape to figure out what was going on. but after that loud boom came the good news that the university says, again, this was not a bomb. >> all right. well, that certainly is good news. the headline right now, a suspicious package at san jose state. they have since destroyed that package. and as maureen just reported, it turns out it was not any type of explosive device. and the football game there at san jose state will go on as scheduled. >>> well, san jose is considered a new proposal tonight to hire more police officers, a lot more. this comes after years of cutbacks and a bitter fights over pensions that resulted in many officers leaving the department. ktvu's robert handa is live in san jose and tells us this new plan is stirring controversy. >> reporter: that's right. there have been a steady flow of officers leaving the department, ever since the city and union began its fight over pension reform. now the mayor and a council member are proposing a plan to restore staffing. but all it did was cause another bitter war of words. the city of san jose and the police officers union say it will take about 200 new police officers to restore staffing. that's all the two sides agree on. today they proposed a four-year police restoration strategy designed to fill all current vacancies, restore wages by at least 10% and add 140 new positions, raising the budget level. but how to pay for it? >> we obviously hope to get some from pension reform. that's being litigated. we might get some from a tax measure. but as we do get additional revenues, we'll have a plan in place. >> reporter: the police officers association called the proposal empty promises a

talked to a woman who was actually sleeping in another room when it all happened. >> reporter: that's right. the baby's great aunt said she was inside the house. she says the father and son were sleep right next to each other when she heard about eight shots. tonight, their killer still has not been found. the time, 2:46 a.m. the location, a home on the 400 block of gormley avenue in east oakland. >> my sister was standing there with baby drew in her hand, talking about the baby was just shot. >> reporter: they were identified as one-year-old drew jackson and his 20-year-old dad, andrew thomas. >> i went in there to check and andrew, he did his last little thing and turned over. and i was like, well, i know he's dead. >> the shooting took place at the rear of the residence. the suspect entered the yard and shot through the rear of the residence. >> reporter: the son died a short time later at children's hospital. >> no baby deserves to die. >> reporter: we spoke with the baby's other aunt. >> he liked to play outside. he liked animals and all the other stuff. he liked to play. he loved to play with his sister. now we have to go home, and my sister has to explain to her daughter how she'll never see her brother again. >> reporter: relatives say the father is from fresno and he was in oakland where he grew up, first to attend a party, and then later this week to attend his cousin's funeral. the interim police chief says it appears that thomas was targeted and it could be possibly connected to his cousin's death. there is a candlelight vigil scheduled here in dimaggio had told hannah anderson that he had a crush on her. james dimaggio may be driving a blue nissan versa. >>> a federal appeals court has upheld a death sentence for a former officer convicted of killing six people 30 years ago. jack sully received the death penalty for the killings of five women and one man over a six-month period in 1983. the bodies of three victims were found stuffed in surveillance tapes and interviewing witnesses. >> police would not comment publicly. investigators tell the family they're looking at leads in the area where coke's car was found about two miles from her oakland home. >>> new at 6, police in south lake tahoe are looking for a man you see here. they say he fatally shot a store clerk last night. coworkers say the victim was 27 years old. these photos were taken by a surveillance camera at the convenience store near highway 50 and lodi avenue. >> we got a call from a patron who had walked into the gas station, that he had found a clerk lying down in a pool of blood. >> police say it's likely the shooter is local, not someone who was just passing through. at this point, the victim's identity has not been released. >>> also new at 6, budget cuts in washington are holding up millions in maintenance projects at golden gate park and another famous bay area attraction. that's bad news for tourists and our economy. >> reporter: national parks in california need $1.6 billion for maintenance. but the federal government can't afford it. i dug through figures from the national park service. golden gate national recreational area needs more than $260 million. structural upgrades are needed to keep alcatraz safe for tourists. and yosemite national park has to put off more than $375 million worth of work. officials tell me they can't do required maintenance. even landmarks in our nation's capitol can't escape the budget crunch. >> when you let these places fall apart, you're saying that you don't even care enough about your own country and your own home. >> reporter: he says local economies pay the price. california's 26 national parks brought in $1.2 billion for the local economy in 2011. between employees and tourists, problem. grease clogs. crews use high-resolution cameras to scope them out. here you can see a portion of a grease buildup that stretches through 1,000 miles of pipe. adding to the problem? 30% of san francisco's sewers are over 100 years old. that makes removing the grease that much more difficult. >>> santa clara county is reporting its first human case of west nile virus this year. a woman in her 30's, hospitalized for viral meningitis, turned out to be infected with west nile virus. she is now recovering at home. vector control showed us a typical scene these days, dead birds with west >> definitely a hungry bear. around here we're in an unusual weather pattern. this is typically what we see in the summer months. high pressure, 90s in the valley. what we're seeing is this low pressure center that's been persistent. it drives a lot of cool air inland. that means just mild temperatures. tomorrow this pressure is going to weaken a little bit. as it does temperatures will warm up. look in the last hour or so, see the fog returning along the coast. patchy fog going on right now. that fog will be around tomorrow morning when you get going. much like it was this morning. we just cool things off but it should burn off more quickly. the marine version instead of being 2,000 feet thick is down to 1,300 feet. it's deeper, getting up over the coastal hills but it's not way over the coastal hills. it should be a lot warmer with temperatures in the valley reaching the mid- to you arer 80s. mid-70s as you get toward lafayette. mid-80s and upper 80s as you get into the warm spots eastern concord, eastern part of livermore valley. so a nice warm day. probably the warmest day we're going to see for a while because temperatures are going to start to trend down after that as we go into the bay area weekend. the extended forecast temperatures are going to throttle down just a little bit. it's not going to get cold. this pressure is a constant player offshore not just through the weekend but through next week. it's going to continue with this kind of mild, sometimes warm sometimes cool, lots of fog weather pattern. this is a good pattern for firefighters. i say a lot because this is the stresse center and we ve a get 95 and temperatures inland you start to have fire problems. we've been getting a little break because of those patterns. these are your highs, 85 in liver livermore and around the bay 82. then along the coast, 64-1/2 in half-moon bay. there'll be some clearing again. there's your five day forecast, you get what i'm saying see that upper tier of numbers, 86, 85, 83. subtle stuff. here's your bay area forecast. if you guys were just saying. that's the best video i've seen in a long long time. >> he knew right what to do. >> he grabbed it and
