the group includes democrats joe manchin and kyrsten sinema, pat toomey, susan collins and bill cassidyresident will head to houston to bow down to the nra where 14 acres of the latest guns and gear will be displayed, all of this happening days after a shooting just miles away that killed 19 children and two teachers. this combined with the suggestion of several lawmakers in texas who are advocating for more guns illustrates just how extreme the gop has become in the last decade. joining our coverage congresswoman veronica escobar out of texas, also a former el paso county judge. first, i want to ask you how you are doing and how your constituents are doing. has the location this week of our country's scourge of mass shootings. >> nicolle, thank you so much for asking. yesterday and the night before last i was on the receiving end of lots of texts from parents here in el paso who just were beside themselves, at not just parents. lots of folks in the community just beside themselves with anger, with pain, with frustration. the next morning i received a number of texts from moms who said

you are seeing it play out in a couple of primary areas including this one and a lot of pressure on kyrstenk. i mean, the issue is -- it is one thing to say this decision would take away a federal right to an abortion. it is another thing to say the next shoe to fall could be a federal imposition of a ban on all portion, and if that is going to be part of the democrat's messaging tool box, they think they can use this to gin up momentum among some of the biggest groups that were disinclined to vote this time around. people frustrated about voting rights and people frustrated the biden is taking a centrist tract more than they thought he would. the parallel question is are there areas in which this debate could hurt swing races? are there swing races where it's not in a democrat's best interest to have the entire conversation shift to abortion or where it matters whether this is how it is framed? is this about abortion or protecting women's rights? protecting personal privacy rights? and so we're going to see a lot of the knew waubss play out. >> if you watch the nuances play out. i want you

these talks and in the days ahead, will try to hammer out the details that came up in the discussion, kyrstenema, the other democrat in the talk along with chris murphy and tillis, the republican, trying to hammer out a deal that will implement narrow changes to gun laws if they were to be implemented, everything as mentioned changing how the background check system would work, reporting mental health cases but not as far as some democrats would like, such as banning high capacity magazines, ar-15s, perhaps raising the age of ar-15 purchases to 21. unlikely to happen in this package, democrats, though, in the house, do plan to move forward with a more sweeping set of gun control measures but that bill will almost certainly pass the how's judiciary committee as soon as thursday but the problem remains in the united states sce senate where 60 votes needed, need to get 10 republicans on board which is why the bipartisan talk seems to be the only place where a possible law can be made if a deal can first be reached. so all focus, all eyes are on that, poppy, as talks will continue into next week.

but senators joe manchin and kyrsten sinema remain opposed to such a move. willie? >> and republicans are circulating a new set of talking points regarding abortion that are reflective of some comments we heard yesterday trying to head off democratic criticism as those midterm elections draw closer. and nrc polling memo suggests republicans could be, quote, compassionate consensus builders on abortion policy. that is the theme they're going with. compassionate on abortion policy. it argues that the democratic position on abortion is the one out of step with the majority of americans. it said republicans should push back against critics who say they're trying to take away contraception or women's health care. president biden is using the abortion issue to sharpen his attacks on the so-called maga kraud so use his term and they're agenda. yesterday he said the republican party's decision on roe v. wade could be a slippery slope. >> what happens if you have state changes the law saying that children who are lgbtq can't be in classrooms with other children. is that legi
