there has been a major injury crash on highway 24 in lafayette. for some time all eastbound lanes were shut down and allie rasmus is live for us at the scene as chp tries to clear up this mess. >> reporter: just in the last 20 minutes, the two right right lanes of eastbound 24 here in lafayette have opened to traffic. you can see cars going through. we are right in front of the pleasant hill road exit in lafayette. and behind me you can see two of the six cars involved in this crash. now this happened around 5:30 this morning. i talked to one of the drivers involved in the crash off camera. he said that he was driving back from san fransisco and saw what looked like a cooler in the middle of the far left lane. he told me he swerved to avoid that cooler. he ended up hitting the concrete barrier here on the highway, and then his car spun back into on coming traffic hitting five other cars. now at least two people were taken to the hospital. the chp says they had serious injuries. as we take you back out here live, you can see the tow truck is gettin

they will take passengers between pleasant hill and lafayette via bus. the bart tracks will be closed from noon until 3:30 this afternoon. so the ntsb can reenact that accident that killed two workers on the tracks on saturday. now, yesterday, the feds announced that the workers had received what's known as simple approval to work on the tracks that afternoon. . >> the inspector and consultant were supposed to remain together during their activity and one of the pair was to be the lookout. >> reporter: that simple approval meant the responsibility for their safety was on themselves. investigators spent much of yesterday trying to calculate the speed of the train. it shows signs of an attempted emergency stop and at this point there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the train. >> the inspection of the equipment also verified that the lights, horn and brakes were operable with out any defect noted. >> reporter: the train was being operated by a manager who was training to be a train operator during the strike. but that trainee was being overseen by

the door, the stations to catch a bus are el so tree dough, west oakland, concord, walnut creek, lafayette, dublin, pleasanton, san leandro, hayward and the fremont station. the buses will take you to the san francisco bay tunnel and starting at 3:00 running until 7:00 the buses will return back to those bart stations, but just like we had a few months ago, the buses probably won't be enough to handle the capacity of people that typically ride bart on a daily basis. back here live at the walnut creek station, we just talked to a couple people and will let you hear from them in their own words at 5:00. we can tell you pretty much unanimous frustration. every person we talked to said we don't like this, they obviously wish they didn't have to be waking up early. one lady told us she was having to get up an extra hour and a half early to get out here to catch this bus. and every person we talked to did not think that bart should be able to strike. saying that they are sort of on the lines of police and fire, that this is an essential service because this is how so many people get into work. n
