boats on lake michigan are not moving anywhere. the coast guard resumed ice breaking operations first time since last winter. they have to keep the shipping leans open. they are calling it operation cold shovel. people have their hoods up and scarves over their faces despite windchill getting below negative 20. a lot of people are staying home, are staying home because they have to take care of their kids and you have hundreds and hundreds of school districts closed all over the midwest because of that bitter windchill temperature. even minneapolis where the threshold is negative 35. they have closed schools today because it is so cold. the real hazard, you have hazards from frostbite but seems most dangerous thing is the roads. in pennsylvania there was 18-car pileup out there. my cameraman came back from detroit and all along the highway you saw cars along the road, they had spun out on the ice. roads are very treacherous and to top it off, more snow on the way. nothing extreme. you're probably talking about three inches of snow

that heavy band across lake michigan is lighter in that area, but where we got the heavy snow are off the shores of lake erie and lake ontario. we have video to show you where we recorded over 2.5 inches of snow this afternoon. it's been snowing, coming down heavily. even places like buffalo total up a foot of snow. just in the bands of snow moving through today. it's specific. the lakes are not completely frozen over so the wind moves over the warmer water, picking up moisture and runs into the for example of the shore line. continuing to taper a little tonight. we'll have an increase as we get into tomorrow knowing, especially around lake erie. that's where we'll see heavier snow. cleveland, cold blustery with the snow coming down. the big concern is from southern kansas indianapolis to ohio. icy winter weather possible. we have warnings out, freezing rain advice for the areas. as the storm system brings up the moisture from the south, it's running into the cold air. as we get into later sunday it tracks east. we'll expect the snow to cross the north-east across main and it will be

as you can see behind me here on lake michigan it's starting to freeze over. stays clear like this i'll be able to get my ice skates out here. it's awfully cold. obviously chicago has a battalion of salt snows and snowplows at the ready. it took me a long time to get down here this morning because i was stuck behind one. the mayor of the city said that chicago is prepared for this cold. just in closing i have to tell you up until yesterday we considered ourselves pretty lucky because last year we had a heck of a cold spell around this time of year. as a matter of fact, 2014 was a record year for cold temperatures and cold weather in the chicago area. we thought we were getting off the hook but as of yesterday into today, tomorrow it's going to be colder. the wind is supposed to pick up. all of a sudden we're not feeling so smug about mother nature. >> kevin, thank you. >>> this year's flu outbreak getting worse but there is good news for those who did not get the flu this season. so far up next i'm going to talk live with our medical contributor dr. natalie ac

this is from michigan, you can see, the lighthouse sits along a very, very frigid lake michigan.at lake, and windchills we're told have been below zero. >> what he can bear to look at temperatures warming up. we have that today. it looks not all that bad. out on the board walk, you can probably run the entire lent dressed in anything or nothing, and no one would see you, except our cameras because it is very quiet out there this morning the temperatures are cold, head out to reading and see any snow thaws fallen in the last week or so, still there. obviously very, very cold, nothing melting any place. we might get a little melting of some of the snow we pick up the other day. so if you have seen some in your yard, you may not be seeing it for that much longer. now, we looking at conditions that i think are improving though they don't look like it right now. >> it is still brutally cold out there 8 degrees just 8 degrees, as the atlantic city airport 12, in the poconos, storm scan3 we are starting to see some warmer air, coming in, at some of the higher levels toward the ground co

how is this arctic blast impacting lake michigan, and how are you, sir?reporter: i'll tell ya, this is the worst day so far because we're getting it from both ends. you can see the snow starting to blow in now. earlier we had what's called lake effect snow, and maybe we've got some diagrams that show you what it is. it comes in off the lake with the cold arctic air over top of the warmer lake waters, get condensation, and that comes in as lake effect. we're getting it from another storm system, so we're getting snow from both directions, at least for the past day or so. frigid air continues with this snow, and if you take a look at p wind chills out there, you know, it's cold enough. we've been 0 or below all day, maybe inching over just a little bit here, and then you get the wind chill on top of that. we've had, you know, 20 mile-an-hour wind chill, or 20 mile-an-hour wind gusts so wind chills down in the -20 range, and if you look at them overnight, they're going to be cold. [laughter] where's it coldest? where that playoff game's going to be this week
