laura anthony joins us with new details on what happened out there last night. laura? >> reporter: hi, cheryl. there are still remnants of what happened out here this evening. behind me, the cars that actually burned, one car actually went up in flames. as you said, the highway patrol had a massive force not far from here last night to help keep demonstrators off the freeways. they also had information, they said, before hand that a big side show was supposed to happen. at the same time. the ak slon was caught clearly by sky 7 hd just after 10:30 wednesday night. two red cars doing doughnuts in the middle of the road. with hundreds of spectators standing just a few feet from the skidding cars. at one point it appears one of the cars may have hit a bistandser. then within minutes highway patrol cars, lights flashing, surrounded them and started making arrests. one car apparently trying to escape burst into flames. >> we were able to use our training, to block everyone in, prevent the escape routes. a few people were able to get out but we blocked in the majority of them

. >> laura anthony is live with the story. >> reporter: hi, harry. it will cost more and will take a little longer, but the steel plates that caused that big log jam next month will not be there any longer. caltrans has found a fix that involves a different type of concrete. those infamous steel plates that caused so much trouble for commuters in october won't be back. that's according to caltrans, which announced they found a way to replace the aging expansion joints on the upper deck of the western span without using the plates. >> what we're going to be doing is we're using rapid set concrete. that way we can get in there, do the job in one night, you know, and go ahead and be done by morning. >> reporter: that is one section per night. no plalts needed. the repair work will be done between 9:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. the cost will also increase from $1.7 to $2.7 million. >> it will cost a little more money. the project is going to take a little more time than expected. but the upshot is, no more plates and traffic will be able to flow. >> reporter: s

laura anthony is live now in oakland. laura? >> business leaders here, the association sent a scathing letter to police and city leaders about what they saw as complete inaction by the police department when things turned ugly last night we talked with a demonstrator in the crowd. he told us he tried to stop vandalism but was then, attacked. >> i started out just moment tear ily. he is an organizer with a group but says it went too far. walker was among a group of demonstrators on telegraph avenue. at one point he said he was jumped by several men when trying to stop vandals from spray painting a local mace sonic temple. >> you're hitting local business people we've known for years, we grew up with these folks and you're attacking their business? there is no respect behind that. >> the association believes this went too far. the group sent a scathing letter to police, quote, the oakland police department's failure and our elected officials to distinguish protective protests is unacceptable. >> whatever the issue is that this doe

laura anthony has the follow-up. >> perhaps these side show enthusiast didn't know or didn't care. but when they decided to stage an event last night there was an army of police and highway patrol officers just few blocks away. action caught clearly by sky 7 hd after 10:30 wednesday natur nature doing do nut in the middle of the road at the port of oakland. with hundreds of spectators standing just a few feet from the skidding cars. at one point it appears one of the cars may have hit a bystander. then within minutes dozens of highway patrol cars lights flashing surrounded them and started making arrest. one car apparently trying to escape burst that flames. >> we were able to use our training and block everyone in. stop the escape route because we lost a few people able to get out but we blocked a majority of them. >> red van tried to make a run for it by smash go through a chain link fence. occupant got out of the van they include add child in a stroller. the highway patrol test there were also gunshots fired from the crowd but no one was hurt. another smaller side show event was
