our laura garcia talked with scott anderson, who is the chief economist from bank of the west about this trend. >> it was a terrible number, much worse than expected, first contraction since the pandemic, so consumers are slowing down their spending a little bit, still consumer spend something holding up pretty well. business spending was okay. what really subtracted from the gdp number in the first quarter was the trade balance. we're just importing too much and not exporting enough. that's subtracted almost four percentage points and inventories that weren't built up as quickly in the fourth quarter.
