i had known lee hiller before. i knew of the book and then i picked it up, "a woman's war," and it was so fabulous. it was beautifully done, first of all, based on photographs that had been hidden for years in the attic of farley farm in east sussex where miller spent her last years and never even told her son what she had done in world war ii. he discovered it, 66,000 pieces of prints and photographs in the attic after she passed away from cancer. i think it was 1977. and so that started me going. and she started me talking about miller and her book. i've read a lot of martha gelhorn's stuff, and i was in a book shop in washington, d.c., and i picked up janet's book, and it was a stunner for me, because gelhorn has been an thol jazzed but not quite in the way this book was organized. it did the war years. although it took you to 1948 and pre-war years living at the white house and doing reportage for harry hopkins. what i liked about the book was not only the selection, very judicious selection. she's a real pro.
