we last saw an outbreak of legionnaires in napa county last year. officials there saying the source was a cooling tower at an embassy suites of 12 people infected. one person died and several others were hospitalized. the health department in contra costa county took water samples from the day spa. we expect to hear preliminary results sometime early this week. reporting in richmond, i'm james torres, ktvu fox two news and contra costa county health officials are asking anyone who visited the zen day spa to get screened by a doctor right away. according to the cdc, one out of every ten people who contracts legionnaires disease will die from complications of the illness. it can take anywhere from two days up to two weeks for symptoms to appear following an exposure. now for more, we're joined by dr. sarah park, who's the medical director at redwood city based blood testing company carius. dr. park is also a former top official with the cdc. so the perfect person here to come on and help us understand the seriousness of this outbreak in the east bay.

but what is legionnaires disease? so legionnaires disease is caused by a bacteria, just like bacteria that can cause a regular community acquired pneumonia. and that bacteria is really insidious because when people come in with pneumonia, we usually use one kind of antibiotics. but unless you suspect legionnaires disease, you may not treat with the right antibiotics. and again, about 10% of people can die. it's usually people who are older in 50 smokers and who are immune compromised. so it comes to just being able to identify it, to be able to say, well, look, we know it's in this community. if someone had access to this small or had gone to the spa or any other thing in the area, you would look at the symptoms a little differently. we have some of the symptoms we want to put up on the screen right now for folks so they can kind of just get a better idea of what they should be looking at. there we go. we have headache, muscle aches, fever, cough, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, confusion. but but i l

tonight, we are learning more about the cases of legionnaires disease reported in the east bay.unty health authorities are awaiting test results from the lab after three cases were reported. investigators believe they're all connected to a day spa in richmond. a 46 year old man and a woman who went to the zen day spa died after suffering symptoms of the disease. a third person who may have also contracted the bacterial infection from the spa jacuzzi has recovered. authorities hope that tests of the spa's water will lead to some answers. ktvu tom vacar spoke with health officials as well as a county supervisor who wants a license check. now on every spa in the county. at the moment, we're still awaiting scientific verification that the deaths are a result of recent visits to the zen days spa in richmond site. lab testing of the spa water samples is a complex test that must be backed up by a chain of evidence pointing directly to the spa. infectious disease expert doctor and professor john schwartzberg. the bacterium typically is grown. that takes 2 or 3 days. it's grown on specia
