lisa: what is also interesting is it is about scale. cost cutting and scale. -- i can'tecessarily wait to grow my business in south america. especially with hmos. i need to find a way to make money as they max out on investment. lisa: this is more cost cutting that investment in r&d. joe, to your point, that chart was really interesting to me because stimulus is a global affair. rates have been low everywhere. you are going to have the impetus for companies to buy one another everywhere in the world and you have u.s. companies looking overseas to buy companies and other countries to sort of get some sort of international diversification. lisa: the global growth issue is not just in the u.s. it is global. it impact ceo's around the world. the united states has exported financial engineering and technology for decades, so when you are seeing is ceo's endboards in foreign countries catching up to the u.s. in that regard to joe: -- in that regard. joe: big rally. it has people talking about when is that 10% correction coming? when is it com

joe: lisa, what about you? contagionhere a triple down in these kinds of incidents?isa: i think it was mohamed el-erian who said it's not fair to paint under one brush anymore under "emerging markets," because there is this bifurcation within the emerging markets with the winners and losers. venezuela,rkey, certain countries that have really struggled. and then you have mexico that has been everyone's favorite for a long time. you are seeing some outflows for emerging markets for the first time in a while. perhaps it has to do with writing benchmark yields. alix: and this strategy that we are looking at on the screen. talking about bond volatility. are starting to shrink. they were at a high of about $12 trillion last august and are now shrinking by about $400 billion. the result is that there is literally less money from government of can recycle into the bond market. lisa, what does that do for the liquidity issue, or lack thereof? for: it's a big concern people. basically, this has been one of the bright spots. people said that emerging markets will not be that ba

lisa stark joins us. lisa, what does this ruling mean? >> two justices on either side read their opinions from the bench and that's highly unusual. this case involved a drug called med arizonamidazolam. supposed to render the prisoner in a coma-like state. as you said it's been used in a couple of botched execution. the question was does the drug violate the 8th amendment ban against cruel and unusual punishment. no the justice said, it does not. we have held that the constitution does not require the avoidance of all risk of pain. and in his decision, justice alito said, look, inmates have not come before us and given us any other alternative that would be less painful and the district court did not err in finding this drug was okay. justice sotomayor said, as a result it leaves the petitioners exposed to what may well be the chemical equipment of being burned at the statement -- chemical equivalent to e-equivalent to of being burned at the stake. this method of lethal injection is approved and can go forward according to the supreme cou

is exactly why -- lisa is exactly right. the market is going to be worried if the market strengthens a lot from here but there is a lot of debt that needs to be paid back. that is where the market gets worried and worrisome markets generally selloff. we are going to see lots of uncertainty over will the dollar hurt these emerging markets? and also the bond market in , i don't think it's too much to say we had a collapsed there. rates were too low and we are getting back to somewhat of a more normal rate. alix: i was curious how you rank did. we still need emerging markets, we need china to buy our stuff at the end of the day. we are interrelated there. scott: when you look at the puzzle, 45% of the s&p revenues come from overseas. we need china to buy our goods and we need emerging markets to do ok. we need the eurozone to grow and i think it will grow one point 3%. those are important parts of the earnings puzzle we try to put together to come up with the s&p 500 earnings number. we need the rest of the world to participate

lisa: it's not just the fed. we're talking about inflation data with economic growth improving their. when you have a strengthening dollar, that means a weakening of currencies and other places. do they have to sell their reserves to potentially bolster their currency and what does that mean for u.s. assets because a lot of their reserves have been held in u.s. assets. could this add to the weakness in credit markets in general? this is a big concern because once you get a real shift, people are concerned money is going to start flying around and it could be violent really quick. joe: one of the things that was brought up is this rising correlation between bonds and equities, so there's no place to hedge. what are people on the street doing about it? lisa: more cash allocations, people are looking for corners of markets that are not as correlated, but it is a tricky science. this is why you see record flows into unconstrained funds. the question is whether they are really uncorrelated or not. alix: stick with me.

build mark: for more perspective on the fed's latest economic report, we are joined by lisa brumme lisa and carl. lisa: a bit of the reaction we did see was actually a bit of a covering of the selloff. the data really showed moderate growth, which is not consistent with rapid sudden inflation. it will be ok. it was described as anecdotal data used to supplement a hard enough that is already been released. does fomc included in its dashboard? rl: absolutely. there is theory and reality. this provides more of the latter. there's two things that caught my eye here. first of all, the retail. activity improving across the region. this goes into late may. retail sales were somewhat disappointing and consumer spending on the soft side. a lot of that spending is going into services and there was lots of mention of the early easter holiday pulling sales into march out of april. retail was one thing that caught my eye. the second was the manufacturing figures. we've been in the soft patch for two quarters now. activity is lousy in the dallas fed district in kansas city fed district but elsewhere

lisa: on one hand, a look hawkish. target foureir downgradehey did their expectation for where in 2016.l be they don't see the five rate hikes being implied. this would be positive for risk assets because it says they are not taking away the punch bowl all that quickly. scarlet: is data dependent's the real story here at the fed? is the federal reserve more mindful of assets and how bonds, currencies and stocks are trading and reacting to every move? tim: this was the dovish outcome. the biggest surprise was the unanimity. there are some hawks there. maybe the exchange was we won't raise rates yet, but we will raise them twice this year. an on-ramp strategy. i'm not sure that is the best policy. i'm a little disappointed because i think there are some risks here. a pretty steady path forward. mark: peter cook is still with us. giving us that breaking news about today's fed statement. talk to me about the policy -- what have lawmakers been expecting from the fed? peter: the fed has been hearing it from both sides for so
