chardon high school is on lockdown and the f.b.i. is there. eric shawn is live in our new york city newsroom, he's been looking into the events of this morning. >> reporter: imagine the terror this morning in the high school. the kids are gathered having breakfast, then suddenly they hear popping sounds, a gunman in the hallway, described by police as a fellow student. that's how it went down this morning at 7:30 in the high school that has about a thousand students. the gunman they say is a student who kids say got in trouble at the school. we don't know if the suspect is a current student, had been expelled or suspended or is an outcast in the social group. one of the students says he's not a jock or popular kids, saying the suspect does have friends but he is the outcast type. that tragic personality that we have seen over the past several years in this country, in these types of school shootings stemming from the columbine shootings in 1999 when a tomb couple of students killed dozens of students. there were threats on twitter saying peopl

it happened just before 1:30 in the afternoon, putting the school into an immediate lockdown. >> she had the kids sit underneath, get underneath their desks. make sure the kids were accounted for. >> reporter: minutes later, students were streaming from the school into the arms of worried parents. an 8-year-old student, amina bowman, shot in the abdomen. while simply sitting in her third grade classroom. a family friend says the little girl's mother was in disbelief when the school called. >> she's a sweet little girl. i don't know what to do. >> reporter: bowman was air-lifted to a hospital in seattle. she was rushed into surgery. said to be awake and alert, but critical.

that's why the school was actually on lockdown.om that high school. so there might be definitely two people in custody. might actually be a third person in custody now because the students are being released. school board members are telling us that at least two shooters walked in and shot three or four students. happened in the cafeteria. they are not able at this point to update us on the condition of those students. the three or four who have been injured. we'll take a moment to listen in to our affiliate wkyk. >> and we are taking our orders from the safety forces, and we're going to do things as orderly as we can. the first thing we're going to do is any parent who has a middle schooler who wants to take them home, we are allowing that. but we have to sign them out and know when they are leaving. first steps first. >> reporter: middle school and then elementary, and then you'll re-assess the situation. will the high school students be brought here? >> we are waiting to hear what we're going to do. obviously, traffic. >> do the

embassy in afghanistan is on lockdown tonight and seven people dead there after police opened fire to disburse thousands of anti-american protestors. they are outraged at the unintentional burning of koran. at bag ram air base in kabul. despite official apologies, there is concern this eruption of anger may spiral out of control. atia abawi is in kabul tonight. >> reporter: thousands of angry afghans took to the streets today in various cities of afghanistan chanting, "death to america" for a second day of protests. they're protesting the burning of the koran and other religious material by u.s. soldiers in bagram air base north of kabul. since the incident, nato profusely apologized, calling the incident unintentional. they say those soldiers were cleaning out a library at a detention facility on the base and didn't realize what they were burning until the afghan staffers saw what was happening. these protests turned violent and deadly. today, seven afghans were killed and dozens more injured while protestors were throwing stones and molotov cocktails at foreign installations. the u.
