back with me are david gurgen and joe lockhart. of the former vice president coming out publicly in support of impeachment. it wouldn't surprise many people i suppose but did it surprise you? >> i thought it's about time. i've been surprised frankly, anderson, that he hasn't been more in the forefront and been as cautious as he has been all the way along. one of the reasons i think elizabeth warren has done so well is she was out early and back last spring calling for impeachment inquiry and been tough about it and one of the big questions that democrats are going to want to resolve is not only who has a better chance of winning but who is more effective against trump in a debate and wrestling match on a debate. so far she's done pretty well in that category. >> joe, you saw biden say and also nudge the president on not releasing tax returns and susan rice brought this up, it is easy to turn on its head. does he want to talk about family finances and children's salaries. >> yeah. i mean it is -- i think ambassador rice articulated

joining us now, abby phillips, cnn political correspondent, and joe lockhart, former clinton white house press secretary and cnn political commentator. i want to begin with impeachment this morning, joe. you played such a critical role during the last impeachment. looking at what we expect from ambassador sondland from this testimony, the pressure on rudy giuliani, do you think the trump team is in real trouble? have they been caught in their latest statement not being operative, as some folks might say in washington? >> the big difference between this impeachment and the last impeachment is when clinton was impeached, all the information was out. star had put his report out and people had had time to look through it and make their own judgment. we're learning something new every single day in this impeachment inquiry. the investigative part is going on now. and the white house up until now has been very successful in keeping people from going to tell the hill what they know. that phase is largely over. you had yavonovich, the ambassador going on friday saying there are a series of peopl

i want to go now to our senior political reporter nia malika henderson and joe lockhart who served asecretary to president clinton during his impeachment investigation, ann millgrin and ed lacavarra, former prosecutor. >> let's start with gordon sondland. ed mahe's a million dollar dono to trump in a major way. he's under oath. >> right. >> last week they didn't let him testify. he's under oath and it sounds like a lot of things that go completely against the president's version of things. >> there are two takeaways from sondland and the president directed me to work with rudy giuliani and giuliani took charge of ukraine policy, so that is incredibly damning for the president and it's incredibly problematic and you have one of the top-level state department officials saying i was instructed to work with julian owe this. the second part, he is admitting what he can't deny. i heard the word, but i didn't know it was related to theed bience and i expect it during the nine or 10 hours and they wanted to know what exactly did you think when the text messages were sent to you, you were in t

here with me now is joe lockhart, former clinton white house press secretary. and former new jersey attorney general. and special senior correspondent. appreciate you being here. jamie, trump on camera now this morning heading out of the white house not only asking for ukraine to investigate joe biden but now adding china into the mix. reports of him doing this, making that ask, was enough for house to -- to push house democrats to launch a formal impeachment inquiry. what does this mean now? >> i think we have to start by saying each time this is not normal. we also have to say there is no evidence of wrongdoing by joe biden and hunter biden. as jeremy just said, i think what we're seeing here again is very similar to his reaction during the mueller investigation. what were john kelly and mattis and everyone quoted as saying? erratic, unhinged. this is outrageous and it is going to simply add for the democrats more evidence on their side. the articles of impeachment, this is a political battle that this is an abuse of power. >> fraand from your perspective wha

joining us now to talk about all of this and more is joe lockhart.inton's press secretary during impeachment. interesting to hear these moments that have been released from this podcast with george conway finally speaking. what do you hear, joe? >> well, you know, i think you've been playing clips through the morning and he makes very clear that this letter from the white house council to the house is garbage and trash. it reminded me of times when i was in the white house where i'd run up to the council's office because i needed something to push back. saying why can't we write a letter making this argument? they'd laugh and say because there's no basis in the law for that argument and tell me to go back to my office. in the trump administration, it appears that, you know, the inmates are running the asylum. and the white house counsel's office has become a political arm of the president. you know, i think conway calls them out on that. >> it is interesting. that last bite we heard there that he thinks republicans will live to regret their support f

let's discuss with cnn political commentators, joe lockhart, president clinton's press secretary durings and paul begala. he also served in the clinton administration during the impeachment process. so you both are the perfect people to talk to. you've seen this movie before. how does their tactic differ or follow what you all decided to do? >> well, it's radically different. completely different. it's a cover-up. an ongoing cover-up that president trump has engaged in. in the clinton days, we complied with, i looked it up, over 1,000 congressional subpoenas. we made three of clinton's chiefs of staff available in the starr investigation. clint oon himself personally testified and he even gave blood. he gave frickin' blood to confirm that the dna, in fact, was his. trump is doing the exact opposite and so he's advertising that he's guilty. i think the two metrics here everybody ought to look at is which stooid side is more partisan? nancy pelosi has banked some of the partisan fires in her party and is entering this is a reluctsant, somber way. who has an agenda the american people supp
