in fact, the roads caused loudoun county to delay school again. at harper park in leesburg, is it warming up enough so that's starting to melt out there, the ice? >> reporter: yeah, and that's part of the problem we've seen here. it's above freezing right now, but that was not the case overnight. we had below freezing temperatures, so big piles of snow like this one here during the daytime, they melted. overnight they refroze, creating treacherous conditions, prompting schools to open two hours late in loudoun county. icy streets in loudoun county caused another round of problems this morning. this six-car crash closedthe southbound lanes of the loudoun county parkway. some neighborhood streets and parking lots were slick, too. >> the entire parking lot where i live was completely covered with ice and just terrible conditions for children trying to get to the bus stop today. >> reporter: first it was the blizzard and all that snow. now the swings in temperature are creating problems, too. the snow melts by day and refreezes at night. loudoun count

one area that was hardest hit, loudoun county.l seeing flooding problems there tonight. northern virginia bureau chief julie carey, joins us live just off the dulles greenway on a road that's been off-limits for most of the day. julie? >> this is the worst flooding we found anywhere. this is shreve mill road, just off the dulles greenway. this has been closed all day. forcing a lot of loudoun county drivers to find a detour. shreve mill road around 10:30 this morning. on the rise, its banks, but the rain continued to fall and the snow continued to melt. this was the scene we discovered an hour later. the creek's water had surged on to the road. flooding it. the force of the stream clear to see and hear. this is the v-dot contract crew responsible for clearing this area. they were surprised to see the waters suddenly rise. >> it just broke over the bridge not too long ago. we've been coming through here since 7:00 a.m. yesterday. >> because the road hadn't been closed yet, we watched as one car after another rolled up, only to put

go to the north and you see this area and loudoun county, montgomery county. this is the severe thunderstorm warning around frederick. if you live in frederick, leesburg, ash burn, gaithersburg, you want to get into the lowest level of your home. even straight line winds can cause a lot of damage. 70 miles per hour and that whole line is moving towards the east. would not be surprised too to see it even farther. notice where the flash flood warning is. northern fauquier county, loudoun county. never drihr roadways. turn around, don't drown. if we have a severe thunderstorm warning here, we'll most definitely with this line see another one just down to the south fairly quickly around fairfax county, prince william county, around fauquier county because that's where the line is going and that's where -- and we expect this line to intensify just a little bit over the next half hour to an hour and that's what we're going to be seeing here. look at this line right here. we haven't seen any warnings yet, but let's put this into motion over the last hour or so, but y

. >> reporter: today's three to four inches of snow that fell in most parts of the loudoun and fairfax county initially led to slippery conditions. this was the jaftermath of an accident. it appears one suv slid into the back of the other. both had to be towed away. but plows were everywhere, and soon began to scrape down to the pavement. on the main roads and even in the subdivisions. this plow driver had been at it around 2:00, but he was glad to see yet another snowfall because for him snow equals money. >> i actually like it. i don't mind the snow. so it's money. money for me. >> reporter: back live now in south riding. i started to tell you i checked in with vdot and they tell me they are starting to see some icing in loudoun county and we can attest to that. we did a little experiment. i did left my umbrella out at the end of my live report at 5:00 and look what happened to the rain that fell on it since then. it's all turned to ice. this is heavy in my hand right now. now, consequently because of this icing, vdot is starting to shift away from the plowing. there are still a few

again through loudoun county. but now hammering the west side of the beltway. and western sections of mont gomry county. poolsville, bethesda -- pool poolesville. it's not weakening. but intensifying as it moves. this is the severe thunderstorm warning for the district in arlington. this is the tornado warning that will continue for fredericksburg, spots vain spotsylvania until 6:00. >> intensifying as it moves. it's moving into warm environment. this was coming into colder air that never got dislodged. now hitting temps which got into the 60s. and that may have give it more oomph. heavy rain, 123. tysons. all right. route 50, 236 and to the west of alexandria. again, this is severe thunderstorm warning. the immediate metro area, what we call a bread basket. this is the shear now, from tysons to lorton. last time we checked, it was a 71 mile-mile-per-hour wind shear. waldorf at about 6:02. >> and we had a report of three- quarter inches of hail. it's at same line. but intense lightning. and intense winds. we just gotta get through this. i think we'll be in bett

northern loudoun county, up to frederick county and southwestern portion of washington county, maryland. farther east. they have storms on the shore we are dealing with. in our area we are seeing the storms that continue to propagate quickly in the south and the southwest of the washington metro area. there will be more developing here as the prime time of the day. what is interesting is we never broke into any sunshine. that is a good thing. two types of thunderstorms. one that develop on the ground is that tend to be stronger and more enger etic and once thelevate above the surface. if we had sunshine the storms would be numerous and worse. bells are ringing in the weather center. so in a minute someone update and more tornado warnings here. this is the pattern we will be in until the entire line crosses the metro area. and eventually out across the chesapeake bay and the eastern shore. probably have a 45 minutes to

loudoun county is part of the weather bulls-eye tonight that could get up to a quarter inch of ice. news4's jackie bensen is there with a look at the conditions right now. jackie? >> reporter: well, doreen, the conditions are not great. a woman is dead, and the images from the scene of this accident tonight are just awful. it happened on the westbound lanes of route 7 just before route 9. the road was plowed at the there was a light mist. well were not far from here when this happened. the vehicle, and it appears to be some type of suv slammed into the become of a piece of construction equipment, a backhoe in what virginia state police are describing as the right westbound lane. now obviously, this collision happened with great force, as i said. the driver of the vehicle, we believe it's an suv, was killed. she has not been identified. virginia state police are on the scene, trying to figure out exactly what happened, trying to figure out if weather or visibility played any role in what happened there this evening that resulted as i said in a fatality. live in loudoun county, jackie
