luke's in san francisco's mission district. kpix 5's anne makovec is at st. luke's with more on the tense moments yesterday before that gunman was finally shot and killed. good morning, anne. >> reporter: good morning. it was a crazy afternoon here. today we are hoping to find out the identity of this shooter. he was here at the construction zone behind me at cesar chavez and valencia. police say he was pointing his gun at st. luke's hospital which is right next door and also pointing his gun at police. it all came to a head-on top of the construction zone where police say that man was pointing one gun and he was in possession of two guns. one gun he had stolen earlier in the day from the big 5 store in san bruno. here's what police are saying on the radios as they shot and killed that man. >> shots fired, shots fired! seal off two block radius! >> i just took my shot. the suspect is slumped over. >> looked like he dropped at least one long gun. >> we have eyes on him. we are on the roof of the hospital. he is not moving. he has a shotgun. i don't see any mov

luke's hospital in san francisco.was first spotted around 4:00 this afternoon on an upper floor of a new medical building the hospital is constructing near its campus in the mission. >> our joe vazquez just heard from the police chief on what happened. what did the chief have to say? >> reporter: ken, we're on the southwest side of st. luke's hospital and right back there it's a little hard to see it's dark now but those bright lights back there, that is the crime scene right now. you know what, the chief said is that around 4:15 this afternoon a man arrived here at this construction site on the site of the hospital with two firearms, not one but two, and when the police got here, chief greg suhr says the officers heard gunshots. >> responding officers obviously rushed to the scene and could hear shots fired as they arrived. upon arriving they exited their vehicles, looked up and atop the construction elevator was a suspect in -- it appeared to be white coveralls holding a rifle. the rifle is directed at the hospital.

allie will have a live report from saint luke's. you can hear part of a police radiocall about the shooting. >>> a man is in the hospital this morning after he drove away from police in the east bay and then crashed into nine other cars. this happened yesterday morning in richmond. investigators say 28-year-old saul espinosa sped away from a police traffic stop and crashed into a row of cars at 29th street and humphrey avenue. san pablo police say they tried to pull espinosa over for a simple traffic violation. but he took off. they say he was probably going 80 miles per hour or more on 29th when he first hit a bmw. now the driver of that car was not seriously hurt. later police say espinosa smashed into eight more cars causing major damage to many of those cars. rudy was nearby when the crash happened. he says he went over to the car and talked to the driver. >> i asked him, everything's going to be okay. the cops are coming. so as soon as i mentioned the cops he started just freaking out. you know. he was just like oh no the cops.
