joining me now on the phone is the executive director of terror and msnbc terrorism analyst, malcolm nanceolm, we don't have a motive yet or an identified suspect, but the mayor has already called it a hate crime. your thoughts? >> yes. when the mayor identified it as a hate crime, it appeared that he was speaking to some characteristic of the suspect. what we know right now is that this is a male suspect, 19 years old. we don't know what his confession is. we know that he obviously had animosity towards the jewish community. one significant thing there, rev. he's called law enforcement and surrendered himself on the side of the highway, which is very significant. that leads me to believe that it is most likely not a person from the muslim extremist community. they don't surrender for the most part. most likely someone who is from the right-wing extremist community or someone with a personal or psychological defect that has yet to be identified. >> i believe one person identified him as a 19-year-old and the sheriff said he was a resident of san diego. >> that's absolutely right. despite t

i do want to bring into the conversation malcolm nance the msnbc terrorism analyst. icking up on what jim was saying there, this has been such a striking week. where you had -- or last couple of months for that matter, where you had the attack on the mosque in new zealand, you had the attack in sri lanka on the christians celebrating on easter sunday and now what appears to be an attack on people who were celebrating passover there in san diego. >> it is very disturbing that we have this circumstance occurring again. certainly in the united states considering we had the tree of life shooting last november, which killed 11 people in pittsburgh. jim and sean are absolutely right, we don't really know anything about this incident thus far. there are multiple vectors that this could come from, whether it is a personal shooting or a right-wing extremist or an islamic streamist. you just don't know this far or quickly into it. it is only been an hour. but there are some indicators that everyone should take note of. this did happen during sabbath, during the sabbath ceremony

. >> malcolm nance is still with us, the executive director of the terror asymmetrics project. reflecten what michael was saying as well as what the report, ramon, galindo was telling us. >> we're building over the last five hours quite a profile, although it is very preliminary about the shooter. we know that he's 19 years old, he's a white male. he comes from san diego or he was studying in san diego as a student. for the most part, that's what we know about him. his behaviors today as carrying out this attack, going in specifically to a jewish synagogue or chabad, an orthodox synagogue during the passover feast with the intent to kill gives us the impression that he is most likely inspired by a white supremacist ideology. there are some manifestos which are out there that are being reported, and simply because we got the indication from the mayor of poway that this was being seen as a hate crime, that tells us that this was personally inspired by that ideology, and the president himself referenced it as a hate crime. all of this told, we're likely to hear more about his soci
